PSP Battery Life...Straight from Kaz Hirai

    http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Sto...1354.39666.htm

If you are playing a game that is consistently cycling through and putting the CPU to good use, yeah, battery life is going to be shorter. Maybe about two and a half, three hours

Ouch! That's pretty lousy. I've played scenarios in Advance Wars and Fire Emblem that took me longer than that.

Jesus, that's awful. The other thing I hadn't considered is that with only 1.8 gigs available, the PSP discs aren't going to be able to include all the extra stuff you get on a DVD. I hope that means they're gonna be cheaper than DVDs.

It almost sounds like he's waffling on even a two hour movie fitting on one UMD.

So since all Sony products once released are normally 1/2 of the hyped specs, we should assume 90 minutes of battery power.

2.5 hours isn't going to cut it at the rumored price.

Nintendo's respect for battery life considerations is underappreciated as a tentpole in their hand-held dominance.

    Most handhelds require rack-mounted batteries.

To be fair, most DVDs these days don't include all the extra stuff you could fit on a DVD, as companies have started to save such for the "special edition" product they release six months later. The number of other DVD based movies, both new and old, released with no special features at all is really dissapointing.

I used to think 2.5 was fine till I got a gameboy sp. I had no idea the battery life on those things was 10+ hours. After getting used to that it's gonna be tough to fall back to less than 3 hours.

I don't see why. You can get DVD res MPEG-4 (Divx, Xvid) movies to fit on a CD, ~700MB, without too much trouble. Longer films can usually be done over 2 CDs at ~1400 MB. Why they couldn't get a 480x272 resolution movie compressed with some MPEG-4 derivative on a 1.8 gig UMD would be a mystery to me. They should have pleanty of room for a very high bit rate to minimize artifacting.

Err... the battery life is short only if the PSP is streaming data. What this means is that the 1.8GB is nice in theory, but if someone tried to use it all it will make problems. It means no streaming music and video without paying the price.

What from the article leads you to believe that? And if the the streaming process is so battery intensive, why is the battery life for playing MP3's 8-10 hours?

It's pretty clear from what he says that the moving parts (UMD drive) and processor usage/screen usage are the key components of the battery drain. That's why music will play a lot longer. The music on memory stick means no disc usage and the processing is minimal too, not to mention no real drain on the screen because of a lot of upating (it might even turn off?).

At the risk of sounding too negative, it really doesn't sound promising for more than two hours of use pretty much no matter what you do other than listening to music.

Which I think will occur with every game that tries to have decent graphics. With so many purchases based on the quality of screenshots on the back of the box, no company is going to strive to conserve battery life.

Why not? Most games will spin the disc constantly and will max out the processor - I don't see how playing a complicated game (anything with a 3D world) could be less energy taxing than playing a movie.
    Just sayin'

My prediction for the winner of the next gen handheld console market is...

    The Game Boy Advance.

I guess developers will have to get used to the idea of managing the disc spin state to save power. Otherwise there's no way I can imagine anybody actually playing games on the thing.

Because you can spin up the drive to read a block of 10-12 songs and then stop it to save power. That's apparently the way iPods work.
If you're playing something like GTA3, the game is (probably) loading the next visible block of the city as you drive around and/or streaming audio

I told them not to use the PSP as a web server!
