That is indeed pretty cool, and he certainly comes across as an author with a head more squarely on his shoulders than many others.
I'd also say that his writing generally improves as the series continues on; the biggest jump is indeed between Gardens of the Moon and the rest, but you can still kind of see it happening from book to book following. Then again, I didn't have the negative reaction to much of Gardens that others did--I found the general lack of exposition pretty refreshing. (Said lack of exposition does start to become more annoying later on when there's scene after scene of characters not telling each other important things, when there's characters who have good reason to want to know those thing and could just, you know, ask.)
I'm currently about two-thirds of the way through Toll the Hounds, and the biggest irritation is that increasing chunks of the book are narrated in the voice of Kruppe, a character whose most satisfying end would be choking to death on a plateful of dainty pastries, an event upon which all warring factions have a five day truce in order to celebrate and throw an Ewok Yub Nub party over.
