What I'm wondering -- and without better feedback on the whys and wherefores of diplomacy, there's now way of knowing short of running testbed games -- is if acceding to the AI demands will keep them off your back. It seems to me war declarations come after I tell them to "F" off for demanding tech, money, or Great Persons. I wish someone from Firaxis would comment on how this works. Do we have to always expect to fight the other four dudes? Is that a facet of the compressed design? If so, cool, but let us know more about how it works, for Pete's sake!

The map size seems to me a whole separate dilemma. There are perfectly good island locations for cities, and if you close off chokepoints early, you can sort of stake out plenty of breathing room. But, yeah, if close borders erodes diplomacy like it does in Civ IV, you have a point.

However, I can't really suss out what's going on. I'm at that awkward stage where I win every King game too easily, and lose most of the Emperor games too soon.
