Yeah, it kind of sucks how you have to approach it as an inevitable wargame. I want to play through as an appeaser the entire time, and saving up enough money to pay at least one of the other civs into fighting someone else besides me, but I haven't tried it yet. And, lordy, I wish there was some sort of feedback about what sets off the AI civs. I know they wanted to streamline the game, but having the AI acts like a manic depressive off its meds is pretty annoying.
Also, one thing that bugs me is why they felt the need to give certain civs "unique" units that are exactly the same as their non-unique versions. Except for the name, that is. How confusing. Was this a relic of an earlier design? Or is Firaxis just trying to confuse us?
Finally, I can't take credit for the typo in the opening paragraph. That's all Variety's. I submitted text with a sort of George Bush dig that I guess they didn't like:
