I really don't know why I've been signing up for every MMORPG open beta around, I've been mostly disappointed with them but for some reason keep trying (maybe because I didn't get into WoW and try to compensate). There's a new one - Saga of Ryzom, and if it weren't for an ad in CGM I would never even know it existed.
Anyway, they are starting an "open" beta, which is open for Fileplanet subscribers starting Apr 13th. Regular mortals can download the client starting on Apr 20th. I guess it's not a big deal - I understand the arguments about gamers' sense of entitlement going out of control, but still. While I don't believe they owe me anything, this tactic definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Does anyone know if the game itself is any good?

I saw the game mentioned in Penny-Arcade, so I browsed through the home page ( http://www.ryzom.com/ ). Seemed pretty interesting in theory, but I think it will be pretty tought to make the system work. At least they are trying to go for something a bit different. :)

Massive scale PvE encounters with interesting mechanics is something I'd like to see in more MMORPGs.

I'll definately try this one out once the beta opens for non-fp-subscribers.

I downloaded the beta and tried playing last night -- can tool around for a couple minutes, at which point it blows out my vid card (my ATI 9800 goes black, then comes back with the VPU Recover (aka "you just crashed") dialog, and I have to reboot).

That said, unless I hear of other people having similar problems, it's probably just my card -- it tends to be a little flaky occasionally. Seems to be a little more heat-sensitive than average.

Andrew, under the Start Menu in Windows, go to Ryzom --> Configure Ryzom and change the renderer under video options to Direct 3D instead of Open Gl. I was experiencing the same issue (have a 9600 pro), and this fixed it for me ( it is a known issue I think),

Although the I haven't spent much time with the game yet, it is looks reallly interesting, love the graphics (kind of colorful and cartoony in a WOW kind of way).

Still trying to figure everything out, as the interface is very "European " in nature.

It's open for anyone now... I downloaded the client and made an account and ended up playing until 4 in the morning... Ugh... Fiancee is very mad at me for waking her up and she couldn't get back to sleep... (in other words, it seems pretty fun!)

I like how you can edit and rearrange powers on the fly, by adding and subtracting stanzas (which are options, etc). I purchased some new prospecting skills and made one toolbar action that combined all of them (20 degree angle, 5 meter distance, and speed increase). I just need to figure out how to use the fine material prospecting thing properly.
