View Full Version : QT3 server and beyond

Talking with a few people on this again, any interest on a QT3 dedicated game server? It would actually be open to a few sites - gaming related on the poe hosted sites, but a fairly tight group of people who at least have something in common and are all decent people.

It could rotate games every few day and could probably handle one large game and a smaller group game at the same time.

POE Hostings new baseline server is a dual xeon with 1gb ram dual 73gb scsi drives. But i think that is overkill for this (about $300 a month).

But we could get hyperthreaded P4s with 1gb ram for between $179-$210 a month (depends on some options.).

So a few questions, anyone interested?

I am not looking to make money, but cover costs. What would you be willing to pay?

I would imagine some type of password system and perm ban if you are a real fuckup with TKing. Hopefully that wouldn't even be an issue.

We use a few datacenters, so if people are for it, we can test a few Datacenters for response (ping and hops). Then the question is window or linux. Windows is a $20 a month surcharge, but every game comes out with a windows server - at least first, linux is cheaper but we might have to wait.

Also, since many people on here are in the industry, i think having the ability to setup small test servers for review purposes might really be helpful.

I'm interested and I'd help pay for it. I'll also help with setup if you want. I'll talk to you later about it.

I'd be willing to kick in 5-10 bucks a month.

I'd be willing to kick in a few bucks a month too, depending on what was being hosted. About the only thing I play though of this nature is BF1942/Vietnam/Mods :)

As good as Battlefield is, I don't think I ever had as much fun with the full version as we did with the demo. I'm not sure if that's because I got to shoot Derek a lot or what, but count me in for another 5-10 dollars.

Count me in. I'll gladly pay $10 a month to play with people who don't irritate the fuck out of me.

Okay. New question.

If you can test the two DCs we have in mind.

I ask for, time of day of the test, ping time, and number of hops.
You can get ping by ping 64.246.58.104 and # of hops by tracert 64.246.58.104 (on windows machines, using each of the ips below).

**added note, can you please also say your general region - US, STATE or country.

So the two ips:
64.246.58.104
69.93.99.106

That should give us some idea from a random group of players.

Also we are leaning towards windows as most games have the windows server out first - yes? No?

Thanks

I'm getting consistenly better numbers on 64.246.58.104 -- 60ms average, vs. 72 to 75 on the other IP.

I get a bunch of timeouts trying to do a TraceRT...

I'd be in for about $5 to play with sane, semi-mature people. And Koontz. :)

Okay, thanks everyone.

The server has been purchased and should be ready tomorrow. Give me a little time to harden it, test it and setup some games.

Give me a week or so before it is publicly available and then we can start having game requests etc. From what i read, there are some issues with BFV past 32 users, but I figure we can have a good rotation going, and not just BF1942 and its mods.

I was going to create a web inteface for paid users, that let them add the games they own and keep it updated (as well as what they want to play are playing). And then rotate inside of what people want.

This sounds like a good idea. I'd be happy to pay for a secure BF1942 server, or even a BF:V. Good idea Chet.

This is a great idea, I used to do this with some friends on the west coast for TFC, before I switched sides. If it's BF:V or UT2k4, count me in. Any plans for a TeamSpeak or Ventrilo server?

I just set up Ventrilo (although if Chet wants to do it, too, that's fine), over in the BF:V thread. IP is 66.92.163.103. PM me for the passwords.

I'm happy to leave this up for as long as folks want, provided folks don't find it too laggy (it's on my home DSL line).

Well, I'm up for BF:V, since even Best Buy in freakin' Vermont sold out of UT Special Editions and I I'm not interested enough to deal with the 23 disc version.

Actually, I'd love to see BF:1942 and the expansions too at some point, since I just ordered the Secret Weapons pack for $10 along with Vietnam.

Do we have enough simheads here to run an IL-2: Forgotten Battles server at some point?

Coincidentally, Fry's is selling both BF:V and apparently the UT2K4 SE for $29.99 ea. this weekend.

Won't be able to confirm such till Saturday.
