View Full Version : Explain your "handle"

why did you choose your nom de plume? what's the meaning behind it?
mine: sellthekids
the movie Apocalypse Now has a scene in it where Capt Willard is headed up river in the PT and he is reading some mail he just picked up. in the mail is a notice from his commanders mentioning a small fact (i'll paraphrase): 'oh by the way, we sent someone up to do your job a few months ago. we think he may have joined Col. Kurtz's team. here is a letter we intercepted him sending out.'
cut to Willard reading a small note which says:
Sell the house
Sell the car
Sell the kids
I am never coming home
there you have it! i always found that little note funny.

Mine is Ananab Tilps, and I got it one evening at Dairy Queen when a friend of mine and I were waiting in line, amusing ourselves by reading the menu items backwards.
Another favorite from that experience: Retsulc Tun
My favorite internet nick of all time: Serrated Head Juicer (witnessed on bungie.net while playing Myth: The Fallen Lords)

Miramon
09-30-2002, 10:18 AM
Sigh. I hate this kind of stupid poll thread, but it is a slow day at work.
Miramon Lluagor is the Entelechy of Dreams, professionally responsible for mankind's dreams. He held the enchanted sword Flamberge after Charlemagne's death, until he was eventually killed by his son the proconsul Demetrios with that cursed blade. Miramon is one of the Leshy, a race who in Russian mythology are malicious forest spirits, but in James Branch Cabell's books, they are rather more important.
Miramon is something of a Merlin cognate for Dom Manuel, the central character around which Cabell's huge mythos revolves. Unlike Merlin, Miramon is elegantly civilized, something of an esthete, a henpecked husband (his wife doesn't understand why he has to spend so much time on nightmares and erotic dreams) and has a much deeper understanding of the workings of the universe than most other Cabell characters.
See for example Figures of Earth and The Silver Stallion by James Branch Cabell, who if you don't know, is probably the best fantasy writer of the first half of the twentieth century, and is also one of the best writers in general of that period, IMO.

I don't go by my normal handle on this board but for gaming I use PsychoTrain. A coworker put my name into an Anagram site and it was generated. This was back in '95 or so.

Met_K is something that I've been going by since about 1999 online. It's an old nickname stemming from Metallikat, something I was labeled as years ago because I was a huge Metallica fan (pre-sell out!) back in the day.
I also go by Ministry in various places. That's pretty easy to explain, it's pulled from one of my favorite bands as well. Ministry, naturally.

Sum total is still total dork.

balut: Filipino delicacy consisting of a partially developed duck-egg; it is typically eaten by cracking open a small hole in the shell, sprinkling in some salt, and slurping down the wet, crunchy, slightly feathery contents.
I use "balut" because it is distinctly Filipino and no one else anywhere really uses it. Plus it's pretty nasty stuff that yet many people still enjoy.

Auguste Ciparis survived the eruption of Mt. Pelee, which decimated his town of St. Pierre, by being alone underground in a small stone prison cell during the eruption (sentenced to die). Amused at the irony when I read about it a few years ago, I switched from Dammit to Ciparis.
Dammit was a name I had chosen while trying to host a lan game of Red Alert (allowing the use of the 2 CDs in a case to assist in starting multiplayer games was terrific, and my company had several people who owned copies... we played every day at 5pm). After 3 or 4 failed starts, I grew frustrated and started a game as "Dammit!". The game worked, and the name stuck.

The handle I usually use is 'Tele.' I thought of it as i was applying to a hack/phreak BBS called DnA back in 1993 when I lived in Orange County. As i was filling out the application it i realized that my current handle would just get me blacklisted so i looked around my room and viola!
A stupid story, yes, but I got on the board and was happy :)

For sellthekids sake...the wumpus is a creature from an old, old game called Hunt The Wumpus, wherein you hunt the wumpus.
You can play an online version here: http://www.inthe70s.com/games/wumpus/index.shtml#
Coincidentally, I just named my new cat Wumpus - though not after Qt3's beloved wumpus, but the abovementioned wumpus.

I go by "MetroCube" in online games. MetroCube is the name of my cube at work. Metro because I work at Metrowerks, and Cube because I work inside a black cube. You see, after Motorola bought us, they took away my office and gave me a cubicle underneath some very bright lights and that pissed me off so I went to Home Depot and the University Co-op and turned my cubicle into an actual cube using wood, black foamcore, cereal box tops, and extra marketing materials.
I put in a disco ball and I hang old final candidate CDs from my ceiling. Two people can dance in there, but three can only hop up and down like the Peanuts.
When I feel like it, I remove some panels to make a window and enjoy a view overlooking our parking lot. I used to just remove the middle panel, but now I remove both because I started recognizing our female employees by the shape of their bust and sound of their shoes as they walked past my cube and didn't think that was something worth boasting about at the company happy hours.

Sharpe
09-30-2002, 09:41 PM
Well I mostly use my real name (Daniel Ban) for net related stuff but when playing StarCraft on BNet I needed a nickname. Since I was reading the Bernard Cornwell military history series featuring Richard Sharpe at the time, I chose "Sharpe's Rifles" (the name of the best book in the series IMO). That got shortened to just Sharpe after a while. Since then, Sharpe has been what I use for online gaming in most venues.
On this board I used my real name originally, since I had corresponded via usenet with various oldtimers here (using my real name) previously. Then with the new board I switched to Sharpe b/c I was heavy into MMOGs at the time. However, given the recent issues about "anonymous" post I now mostly use both with an AKA.
I could drop the Sharpe I suppose but most of my MMOG guild buddies know that name...

Perhaps it was a Myth: The Fallen Lords tournament. That's the only single-player tournament I have won. Actually, the only team-based tournaments I have helped win were for Myth and Myth II, so if you're remembering my handle in this context, it would have to be Myth.

Online names and handles tend to be like personalized license plates. Instead of being clever they become homages to just how geeky their owner is. Naming themselves after a character from Star Blazers, Star Wars, or something equally, well, boring. Or they're obscure jokes only the user will get or references nobody understands.
I prefer people who take their own name and do something clever with it. It takes imagination and thought! And that's why I tease people who have ready made cool Internet handles and don't use them. I'm talking to you William Harms! I use Hubbub because I was born into it and, well, public school just exhausted all the funny out of goddamn bubblegum jokes.
PS: I've always admired Atwood for choosing Wumpus. It's really the perfect handle for an Internet Troll of his ability. The problem is, he is a Wumpus that unlike the original game, cannot be Wumped.
PSS: Thanks Sparky for posting the game link. Got one for "Spider Fighter"?

I think my nick conforms to the Andrew Bub Internet Naming conventions. I might have to get a judgement on it though.
I'm too lazy to try to type the proper capitalization each time I log in, but I should technically use NiFe2O4 or Nickel-Iron Oxide, the chemical formula for my favorite mineral-Trevorite.
Since I have a degree in Geology, I thought it would be an appropriate nick, and I've never seen anyone else try to use it.

Speaking of the Andrew Bub Internet Naming conventions-- When I first heard you mention that Andrew, I thought of this story:
My wife uses her maiden name. At work one day she needed a password so she used her first initial and my last name. As it turns out, her "secret" password became something everyone in the office used. After a while, the group lost track of the fact that Holly had made up the password and then one day at a meeting someone wondered aloud who had chosen this particularly "demonic" sounding passowrd: helhajj
Ha! Every now and again I use that nick, but I usually prefer to just use my name.

Murph
10-01-2002, 09:15 PM
My last name is Murphy, and somewhere along the way (Jr. High?), some of the guys started calling me 'Murph.' I generally hated it at the time, because most of them were jerks, and so it carried a negative connotation. When I went to create a "nickname" here, it just seemed right, and now several of my closest friends call me that, as well. So, I guess it was just meant to be.
My favorite that I've seen was c19h28o2 -- the chemical formula for testosterone. My physics teacher had it on the back of his boat. I'm pretty sure he's not online much, but I've seen that name here and there, and always wonder if it's him.
DennyA
10-01-2002, 09:25 PM
Trevor, and I always thought it was "nife 2 of 4"... Some kind of "7 of 9" type reference...
I use "DennyA" since I've been online since Internet was a vast, redundant array of tin cans, strings, and 110 baud modems. Back when I first started posting to discussion groups (on the old MECC educational computers in 1979), nobody used nicknames.
In games, I use "Mitty," which was bestowed upon me in true fighter pilot fashion (IE: You don't get to pick your own call sign) after I did a CNN/Computer Life piece where I flew flight sims with the Blue Angels a number of years back. If I'm playing a multiplayer game where that name isn't appropriate to the role-playing, I use the more classic-sounding "Mittius."

westy, from my last name "west", and the 'x' from when i used to use pine to send email/usenet posts, occasionally using keyboards where the alt (or ctrl, i can never remember which) key is sticky.

Lando
10-02-2002, 08:37 AM
Well, I go by Lando because my real name is Garland half of which is Land, what most people call me, and Lando which became a bit of a nickname for a nickname.
Usually online, i play under fdiskboy, a nickname given to me by my helpdesk peers for my proclivity to use the fdisk utility to solve any and all PC problems.
I also occasionally use DarknessRising, taken somewhat from the "The Dark is Rising" book series by Susan B. Cooper I read as a child.

I wasn't going to post this, but Dave goaded me into it:
In online games I am often seen as "Misfire". This handle has its genesis in the following old Usenet posting of mine, lovingly preserved by Google (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=4l326l%24kbg%40cosine.torolab.ibm.com).
It pretty well describes my ineptitude in games like Quake and UT, too. :P

I used to go by "Wraith" all the time, which was suggested to me by a friend because one of the games we were playing was Wing Commander Armada, and that was one of the fighter types.
When I started playing Jumpgate, "Wraith" was taken, so I chose "Leadfinger", which is what I went by a few times back when I raced R/C cars during junior high and high school. The common radio type used to control an R/C car looks like this (http://www.futaba-rc.com/radios/futj21.html), where the trigger is used to control the throttle, so instead of a lead foot, I had a lead finger. I use Leadfinger on HyperLobby for IL-2 as well.

You can find me in most games as "RearAdmiral"... a Simpsons reference that popped into my head late one night when playing CounterStrike or something because it has the triple-whammy of being a military rank (above Captain but below Vice Admiral in the Navy and Coast Guard), being some sort of super atomic wedgie (Simpsons), and sounding vaguely sexual.
For those that don't remember the Simpsons reference:
http://www.further.com/~dknuth/Text/fun/rear.admiral.html
In MMORPGs and stuff, I usually try to come up with some sort of name that actually fits the world. As far as I'm concerned, my name in those situations is wholly unimportant to ME, but it's all the OTHER players that will see it and use it, and I don't want to spoil their environment by finding some clever way to say "goofball" in a medieval name. It pisses me off when other players ruin whatever little immersion there is for me by naming themselves "Sir Doarkus" or whatever, so I don't do it.

I've always remembered wumpus from the old atari 800 game M.U.L.E. published by EA.
In that game if you had some time left before your turn ends you can run around the screen with your character over the mountain looking plots of land (the ones rich in smithore). Once a while a white dot would appear in one of the caves in the mountian. If you touched it you just caught the wumpus and I think you got bonus money or something.

My nick is real-life nickname, my real name being Karl though no-one ever calls me that.
I only use it on this one board though, and after reading through the whole anonymity debate I was quite happy with it.
Otherwise I'm most commonly known as Palmtree. It's inspired by Olof Palme, former Swedish Prime Minister. I was looking for a new handle since my old was getting a bit boring. There was a story on Palme in the newspaper and I thought "Hey, Palme is a pretty cool name". Since I didn't just want to steal his name it evolved into Palmtree, keeping the Palm in context while not being political about it.

You know for years, I thought Desslock's nickname was cooler than it in fact is. I know now its a reference to a classic CRPG but a few years back I used to think it was a reference to the classic (and underappreciated) early 80s Jim Starlin / Epic comic "Dreadstar" which was in my opinion one of the earliest (and best) of the "quality" titles and helped pave the way for Dark Knight, Watchment, et al. The hero Vance Dreadstar had a sidekick who was half cyborg/half sorceror named Szyzgy, and I thought his last name was Desslock.
Unfortunately a year or so back I saw a black & white reprint of the series and it turns out the correct name is Szyzgy *Darklocke*. So I was mistaken. Desslock turns out to be a standard issue PC game-derived name. Oh well :).

Been through many names which quickly got snarfed by other folks in games. I started back with Netstorm and Myth: TFL and Fireteam.
Wolfboy - I like wolves
RatBastard - Not particularly fond of my Pops and after a Prime Minister Pete Nice rap song:
"The Rat Bastard that's what they call me,
the Rat Bastard don't give a fuck blow me."
Brilliant lyrics, huh?
Painbringer - Sounded cool after everyone else was using Stormbringer
Lastly, Paien - Actual Gaelic first name
I think Bub or someone above said something to the affect that eventually the names simply sound gay. My wife would look over my shoulder and constantly make fun of the last one by pronouncing it with a long "e": "How's Pah-een doin'?". She calls me a nerd half the time anyway. I then have to pop her one and she shuts her pie hole until it is time for another "lesson".
I have settled on a combination of my name: Tyler Jenkins. People think I am an idiot anyway so the fact that it rhymes with hijinks is fitting, I guess.

My nickname came from a bet in college. I maintained that you could make up a nickname and have it stick if it were strange enough, while my friend thought that all nicknames must come organically from some event. So, I nicknamed myself "The Supertanker of Love" and encouraged all of my friends to use it. I also requested that when I entered the room, they stand up and announce, "Dig the harbor deeper, it is The Supertanker of Love." A few actually did this (the best being one friend who was the lifeguard at the school pool, using the megaphone from the lifeguard stand), which helped me eventually win the bet.
I'm also seen online as "Drokus" (my Fireteam nickname, showing deep inspiration by reversing two letters in "Dorkus"), and on rare occasion under my Lucha Libre (http://www.cmll.com/) name, "El Abogado de la Muerte!"

I'm not much for nicknames (even Dave as short for David). My friends and family growing up never called me Dave so I don't prefer it now. My first boss was a big guy named Dave hence his nickname as Big Dave. People called me Andy for most of my young life, until I was 15 and began dated a very pretty girl named Andie and, well, my family, my friends, and I sort of switched to Andrew.
Yeah, Andie and Andy sitting in a tree and all that.

I think I just broke Bub's coming out story.

I feel boring now.
I was playing NWN, the original, and needed a new character to join the KAAOS guild with - they were an evil guild that did a lot of PK'ing. As you may or may not know AOL used your screen name in the game and even then finding a name that was b2124afA type stuff was pretty hard. I came up with Graller which I thought sounded fairly reasonable for an evil character and was unique enough no one had used it for a screen name. I have used it ever since.

I just realized what is exponentially more gay than having your very own clever little handle: Spending 15 mins. detailing the evolution and final conclusion of said handles with accompanying examples, comments, and bold faced type. I musta had too much coffee yesterday morning or not enough this morning.

Someone wanted to see shots of the MetroCube. Viola!

This is the outside of my cube and me!

This is the inside of my cube. That's a Dell propoganda poster in the
upper right corner, and my Pipboy "do not disturb" sign in the middle
there over my disco ball. On top of the left monitor is a glass fish
from Mexico, a rear view mirror, and a bottle of bubble solution.

Hey Roger, I think you're really good on that Will and Grace show.
Are you really gay, or is that just your character on the show? Bruce wanted me to ask.

This is starting to look like MTV Cribs. Who's going to post photos of their SubZero containing only Cristal and a lonely bottle of A1 sauce?

Even if Tom thinks I act gay, it's safe to say that my bare fridge is a side effect of bachelordom, not celebrity.
Contents:
two pears (well, one now)
a bottle of Moet & Chandon
a dozen packs of b/w 665 Polaroid film
I usually have milk in there for my cereal, but I ran out.

You snatched that thought right out of my brain.
Will = not gay in RL
Jack = not admittedly gay in RL, does not want to limit his roles ****stifled laugh****

I turned my cube into a real cube. I call it the MetroCube. Hence, my handle, MetroCube.
The MetroCube has several advantages over the standard worker's cubicle:
1. it's dark
2. it's warm
3. it keeps out background noise
It's like working inside your mother's womb. Very comfy. Plus, you can party in there.

Ewwww!
There is a joke to be had here along the lines of;
"Your exactly right and I should know because I did some pretty comfy work in your mother's womb, too."
As I am above blue humor, I will leave the tastless jokes for some of our more abrasive members.

Actually, the joke I was thinking of went along the lines of:
"You're exactly right, and I should know. Roger Wong, I am not your father... but Derek Smart is."
