View Full Version : So how geeky are comics and anime?

So I was talking to this woman I've been dating recently, and we were talking about seeing a movie, and somehow Spirited Away came up. I said I had heard (on these boards actually) that it was directed by the same guy that did Princess Mononoke, and while I haven't seen that one I heard that this one is "less dark" which makes it even less interesting for me. And out of nowhere she says that is because it wasn't written by Neal Gayman (sp?) like Mononoke was, so that explains that. And I said who is Neal Gayman and she says well back in my comic-book-reading days there was this comic called Sandman and they were kind of like Greek gods and had these powers and I was like holy fuck this woman has read comic books and is now unashamedly telling me about them. So I got scared and made an excuse about having to get off the phone and then I did. Now I'm not sure what to do. She is not ugly, doesn't wear glasses, and is not fat, but obviously has a lot of other issues, as described above (aside from the fact that she is dating me). Do I
(1) Never see, call, or speak to this woman ever again, and if I run into her on the street pretend I do not know her;
(2) Figure that this is a good time to tell her about my Japanese schoolgirl porn fetish;
(3) Give her number to Thierry Nguyen

On a similair note. Chet if your listening. OMM posted a link in one of their always entertaining rant/reviews a year or more ago to an anime, alien bestiality porn site which was, if I recall, entirely in Japanese. It shocked and scared and scarred me. Now I view it as one more thing the net revealed to me that I would have never ever seen if it had not been for the wonderful technologically advanced age we live in. Now it's simply another sick thing I browsed passed one night while surfing.
So to any Old Man Murray folks out there I want to send out a hearty Thank You for my continuing desensitization to all things utterly freaky. Due in large part to the World Wide Web.

Um, does she know you post to computer gaming message boards? Maybe she is the one who should be embarassed for dating you!

Gaiman. And don't call it a comic book, it's a "graphic novel." :)

Really. You like this girl but won't date her because she reads comic books? What if you find out she also plays computer games?

I'm already involved with someone, so my plans to spread my seed and progeny throughout the contiguous 48 states is well under way. So go ahead and go nuts getting her involved in your little Jappy schoolgirl porn fetish!
Though, it's always nice to have backup baby machines, so to that end, have her give me a ring at (800)-MANSEED.

Kurtz commonly has spelling errors in his strips. It is annoying, but not half as annoying as his news posts. I finally had enough and quit reading his strip after his latest whining about his Alienware commissions.

You come to expect the spelling errors (how many are on purpose) when the window title includes "me no spell good...".
And he posted a "mea culpa" on his Alienware rant fairly soon after the rant proper went up (because I never saw the original rant, only the correction).

If there was a mea culpa, I was already gone. I did see his "everything is OK" post, which only went up after Alienware agreed to retroactively pay him the higher percentage he demanded.

Mark or Tom, delete that post. I was posting a link to somethingawful.com but I guess they don't like their comics being linked direct and have a kind of surprise in store for the unwary. That is not the pciture I linked.

Gaiman didn't write Princess Mononoke, BTW, he just translated it to English from Japanese. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the script, both for that and for Spirited Away. I'd give the latter a chance, if you liked the former.
If you want another dark film by Studio Ghibli (written and directed by Isao Takahata rather than Miyazaki, however), try Grave of the Fireflies. It doesn't get much darker than that.

That's why I'm dorky enough to save all my images to my own server, and link to it rather than other people's. So when my own attempt at making jokes are NOTWORKSAFE, they're that way on purpose.

Does he speak Japanese? I thought he just adapted the literal translation (subtitles) for the dub script.

Kurtz has completely sold out. He's turned into a big fucking putz, and an annoying one at that.
Remember that rant he had about the Star Trek box set being so expensive? I sure as hell do. I was the one who showed it to him. He came into the store (for those who won't know, I manage a record store right now. Think Rob from High Fidelity and you'll do fine.) and walked around for a bit. Ignoring the annoying "What's goin' on, man?" schpiel that you get whenever you go anywhere nowadays.
So he comes up to the counter looking around, seeing what all we have. All our big DVD boxes are back there because they're so damn expensive. He notices the Star Trek set, which we now sell for $99.99 instead of the retail $129.99. He asks about it to verify how much it is, and then gets mad and leaves.
The kind of guy you never want to deal with. Comes into your store, whines about the poor selection because he's too stupid to find his Air Supply cd's, then leaves angry because $12 is too much to pay for a new cd. Oh, and said type of customer will -always- ignore any attempts to say hi or help them because of their genetic disorder which makes them into the most completely fucking stupid people on Earth.
And if it wasn't Kurtz, which I think it was-His post about it on his site was on the same day he came in-Then some other fat-ass German who looks exactly like him came in.
Kurtz is greedy and is turning into an elitist. 'Nuff said.

Why in God's name are you yawning at a factual event? No less one that I'm trying to tell without being funny.
You're not very good at this, are you? The point of yawning is to yawn at me when I'm attempting to be funny. You yawn, meaning I'm not funny. This isn't hard. You can grasp it.

(oh boy, i wonder if Rob from High Fidelity will yawn now.)
I'm not elitist, nor pretentious.
Unlike some people, however, I do not speak in a monotone, "my opinion only matters to those of you who don't have opinions of your own" voice. I speak with passion. I speak with emotion. When I talk about an album, it's not an, "Well, it's good. Blah blah blah..." type response, it's an "The album is good! I really like the detailed drums. The way the high-hats just sort of float in the background really compliments the attention the band pays to their music." etc
If, however, you are intimidated by what I have to say, then it's not my problem, and I will deal with it no longer. If you laugh because of what I have to say, then laugh. Hell, I'll laugh with you. I'm the biggest joke I know.
One thing you do not do, however, is yawn to me. It may be dismissive, but it's about the most rude thing you can do to a person. Doing it not only in anonymity but also in complete and utter silence aside from that is ten times worse.
Until you actually have something to say, then I say good day to you.

In reality, $12 isn't too much to pay for a new cd. The artist would get shit from that, and that's why it's too little.
Drop all cd's to $10 except for double albums and stuff like that, give the artist the majority cut, and fuck over the label. That's how it should be.

Oh, fuck me. I am losing my edge, man. Here, let me put it into perspective:
Yo, my nig. Drops all dems recahds to a ten-piece 'cept for dem bigga albums like Notorious BIG better than dead word! Shizzat like that, my nig. Ja feelin' my vibe, dawg?

Yeah, because if the cd was twenty bucks, the artist would get so much more, right? They're screwed either way, and even at twelve dollars the profit for the publisher is ridiculous (http://www.negativland.com/minidis.html). Tapes don't cost that much, and they have moving parts!
Either drop the price to ten dollars, as you suggested, or actually share all of that extra cash with the people making the music. I guess I'd feel better either way. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that making me feel better isn't what the industry is all about :( .

You're 100% right that the artist gets screwed no matter how much the cd costs. Unless they have a contract setup to where they get a percentage of sales instead of anything else, though that's kind of rare.
And I agree. I would feel alot better if they either dropped it or started sharing more with the artist. Or both. But I don't expect to see it happening, especially since the FTC and FCC are asleep at the wheel.
