There are a number of Gauntlet type dungeon crawl games out now. Titles include Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Hunter The Reckoning and its sequel Redeemer, Balders Gate Dark Alliance, and its upcoming sequel DA II, D&D Heroes, and now FallOut BOS. I'm tempted to try one or more of these but I cannot tell which are the gems and which are the crap.
I have a Gamecube, XBox and PC. These games seem like they would be best on console, but I'm flexible.
Which is of these games is recommended? How do they compare?

DA and FBOS aren't really Gauntlet-type games... I never played Hunter or Redeemer but I wasn't under the impression that they were either. Even Dark Legacy only kind of vaguely is.
I recommend Gauntlet II.
Hunter and Reedemer are more like Double Dragons.
Isn't the LOTR:ROTK game a Gauntlet-like game?
The demo I played on the PC sure seemed like it.

All the real Gauntlet games are great! Not so much like the original Gauntlet, more like short but well-made Diablo clones. Great fun.
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is very good as well but there's a bit of a story in-between the killing, hope you don't mind that.
Fallout: BOS and D&D Heroes are said to be rather mediocre so I'd be careful with those.
Hunter the Reckoning was pretty bad. What genius made the firearms semi-automatic? Playing the twin gunned girl meant finger pain in the first level. The best characters were the ones with powerful ranged attacks, so your fingers would only hurt a lot, instead of falling off.
BG:DA was very good, especially in co-op.
I'm a fan of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy for PS2.
Midway really put a great deal of effort into incorporating an especially massive set of new features and upgrades over the arcade renditions exclusive for home play. There are nearly 100 entirely unique looking worlds to plunder each with hidden stashes of secrets, the combat has been updated significantly adding in brand new melee and ranged combos and a block feature. The levels are completely retooled with new mob and item placement and exclusive new midbosses, and the game runs at a slick framerate. Just an obscene amount of content for a low price. It's no Diablo 2, but it's a rocking good time.
BG:DA is neat at first, but too restrictive a game. The graphics are pretty, but the aesthetic design in the level layouts and event planning is as bland as it comes(Gauntlet has far more diverse and creative worlds to carve through). The quest really bottoms out after the intial wow factor wears off. You never find any unique treasure that's not worth selling to the shop, and the a major chunk of the abiliuties learned are worthless. It lacks the variety that Gauntlet brings to the mix, and though it can be a decent romp in co-op initially, the fun wanes all too fast.
Hunter has neat ideas, but the game is just lacking polish and presentation. Not really worth a look.
Champions of Norrath looks promising. Online for PS2 and should hopefully be a great upgrade to Dark Alliance.
I haven't played Heroes myself, but a few friends of mine warned me to steer very clear of that dissapointing mess after their weekend rental of the game.

It's more like Golden Axe with a deeper combat system.

Redeemer is no better.

Speaking of which, has anyone played Sega Ages 5: Golden Axe? I wants it.

BG:DA was fun, staty away from the first Hunter game it's too hard to be fun. The second one might be better. I think their QA testers got too good and asked them to crank the difficulty too high.

Blasphemer! I like Return of the King as much as the next guy, but that game wishes it had combat as good as Golden Axe!

My favourite Golden Axe was the arcade sequel. Instead of this horrible, horrible, horrible Sega Ages remake crap Sega should just port that to consoles. I don't think it ever got a home conversion. There wasn't a Saturn version, was there?
The Capcom D&D arcade games were great. A little bit Golden Axe, a little bit awesome.

What about the Genesis version?
Also, what's wrong with Sega Ages?

Wow, they made a Genesis version of the arcade sequel? The four player one where Gilius=Thunderhead the dwarf rides on the big guy's back?
From what I heard, the Sega Ages games suck. They sure as hell look bad. Except for Fantasy Zone which is a respectable update to a mediocre game.
