What can you recommend? It can be ANY genre. So long as it is fun for 2 -3 people to play on a LAN.

( already have C and C generals so don't worry bout that )

I like NOLF 2, a lot.

And Warcraft III, of course.

The Serious Sam games are fun to play in co-op, I'd put that near the top of the list. Especially since they're cheap. Also, just about any RTS that you like.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Deadly Dozen: Pacific Theater is a pretty good co-op game if you can find it. We popped in it one time and ended up playing ten of the missions straight through.

Hidden&Dangerous. You can download it for free and it's an awesome coop game with 3-4 players.

FPS:

Rainbow six series. Slower paced but very tense and excellent in Co-op mode whether just terrorist hunting or doing "proper" missions
Hidden and dangerous - Awesome (and as noted free)

Driving
Colin McRae Rally - great fun, you cant bump each other though
NASCAR if you want to knock the snot out of each other.
Insane - if you just want to have fun without having to bother about proper car setups and all that crap.

Others

Total Annihilation/Warcrafty type stuff. Take it easy if you know the ropes and your mates dont or play co-op in warcraft.

Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, the Rainbow Six series, there are some good Operation Flashpoint missions out there that are co-op, Dungeon Siege was some good multiplayer mindless fun (but no saving progress), Warcraft III, Rise of Nations... whoops, some of those were already mentioned.

Viet Cong has an awesome co-op mission. Well, one that I'm aware of.

Yeah VC has a few good coop missions, theres one where you have have to hold the radio hill against endless waves of VC troops comming from all sides. Very fun stuff.

Port Royale was a blast. It's like Gazillionaire but real time pricing updates when you buy/sell.

I pulled into the Bahamas (it's set in the 1500's i believe) and started buying Tobacco like MAD at the same time as my friend. He didn't pay close enough attention to the supply in the city. He paid $700 for the first ton he bought and $1,300 for the last!!

We've had a lot of fun playing Starcraft co-op vs. the computer hordes.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Unreal Tournament 2003 yet. With all the bonus packs available, there are a variety of excellent game types. I believe all of them support bots which will let you guys enjoy larger games even if you only have two or three people playing.

Diablo 2 (+ expansion), of course.

UT2003 was mentioned in the second post. :)

I can't think of many others to add to the list. Diablo II is fun in co-op and 2-3 would be the sweet spot for player count, IMO. Ghost Recon can work, too, though you'd probably want to leave respawns on and realize that sometimes you need to hike back to your friends when you get killed.

Doom, Doom II and Hexen are all pretty fun in co-op with one of the open source enhancements (my favorite is JDoom). Hexen even lets you pick different classes, so the players can complement each other, something you don't see often in a shooter.

Screamer 4x4 has a great multiplayer mode where you try to knock each other off the top of various mesa-style levels. It only supports up to four players, though. That game's a few years old, so should be cheap if you can find it (goes for about $3.00 on eBay) and run on anything.

For co-op FPS fun, another vote for Raven Shield, UT2003, Vietcong, and NOLF2. Bring good hardware, though.

Virtua Tennis
Age of Mythology
Midnight Club 2
Worms (any version really, and the experience is enhanced if turned into a drinking game)
Diablo 2
Lots of old arcade games played through Kaillera can be fun too.

System Shock 2

I love the game, but the multiplayer in it never seemed very stable (level change freezing, and a few instances of inventory corruption). I don't think I have ever played it with more than 2 people where we haven't given up about halfway through in frustration. If you do this, save often. When I did get through the game with 2, we had to save before and after every zone change.

Rise of Nations has a game mode that works really well with odd numbers of players: Assassin. Nobody is allied to anyone, and there is no diplomacy, instead each player is arranged on the map between one player that they must assassinate and another player who is trying to assassinate them. You can attack the player attempting to kill you, but you suffer extremely high attrition in their territory (and supply wagons don't help) so you're mainly fighting a delaying action on that border. When you knock out your victim you get a big resource bonus, and the next player becomes your victim. Last person standing wins.

It's cool because it means that with odd numbers of players you don't have to try to set up 3 v 2 games with special rules or handicapping certain players, and it also has some new strategic dynamics. If you attack you are preventing your victim from being able to attack his victim, so it's easier for people downstream to attack you. And vice versa.

Awesome - I've copied all these games into a list and will go check reviews for them shortly.
Incedently I just had a two player LAN. As my mate didn't bring his copy of generals ( newb ) we were pretty stuck for what to play.

You know whats really fun to play with only two people.

Deer Hunter 2004 Demo.

I usually hate 'huntin' Sims', but this was pretty good. ( There should be a game where you get to Hunt THE SiMS).

- oh, and shooting other hunters is bad - you get kicked from the server for headshots.
