Can't open mpgs from Internet Explorer

I have an odd problem: if I try to open an mpg and play it while in Internet Explorer (version 6, in XP) I get an error mesage - media player has caused an error and will shut down, etc. I can open wmv files no problem, just mpgs. And I can download and play mpgs in media player, no problem. Just can't open them from IE. Kind of a pain to have to download the file in a link, etc. rather than just open it.

Any tips of how to fix this?

Maybe install/reinstall teh latest media player? or try "reinstall" IE .... sorry that's all i can think of...
