View Full Version : Cisco 678 with Covad/Speakeasy DSL - what a nightmare

I've spent the last few hours trying to get my Cisco 678 to work with Covad, and I'm about ready to give up. It's going to be a week before the replacement hardware shows up, so I should be able to get it to work, right?

Wrong. The line trains, and it shows me the correct speed, but I can't get the PPP to work correctly. I suspect the Zykel I'm getting by UPS is no config at all, as I can't find squat for configuration info on Covad or Speakeasy's sites.

Worst, I can find these very vague statements by people online that they were somehow able to get it to work with bridging, or PPPoE in Windows, or some fool thing.

I can't get squat to work. Anyone happen to be a DSL expert?

Not with a Cisco. The only one I have to support is a 17xx series running on a T1, and I'm doing "sho" commands on damm near everything. Thank God I have the whole config in a text file.

www.dslreports.com - someone on their forums may help you.

I'm not sure what covad uses (bridging or PPPoE), but depending on the mode you'll have to setup the modem to do that. If you call covad tech support they should be able to help you do it, if you don't want to do it on the phone check the dslreports forums for covad. You'll also need VPI/VCI (Qwest Region *should* be 0/32), Keycodes, Etc. Etc.

I scoured all of Dslreports.com last week. The worst thing is I can find a couple people saying they got it to work - but they just give these awful one-liners like "I had to get a PPPoE router!" Gah.

Anyway, I'm getting the new modem tuesday, so it's a moot point.

Nah, I never could get the bridged mode working. Someone on speakeasy's forums said they managed it, but I've got the new modem here, so I'll just hock the 678.

I installed DSL for 2 years, but it was ADSL and I've done very little work with COVAD mostly due to my hatred of them

Ok, got the new modem tweaked - 2500kbps, baby! That's about the theoretical max for a 2500 line.

A lot closer to the backbones than Qwest's shit, too.
