In case you missed the best movie of the last two years, Kinji Fukasaku's BATTLE ROYALE is finally coming to the states in a two-disc Special Edition DVD release. Soak in the butchery -- marvel at Beat Takeshi's glare -- embrace the teenage apocalypse.

In a near future where Japanese society has become fed up with the hooliganism of the younger generation, one luckless ninth-grade class wins the state lottery to fight one another to the death on a remote island. Provided with weapons and a rudimentary combat-training video presentation, the kids are set loose to ambush, assault, and otherwise murder each other until only one winner prevails.

Some take to it with relish. Some cower and blubber and become easy prey. All will have to face the ultimate test of teenage character.

It's already available in PAL at Amazon UK -- I'll update to let you know when/where to order in the U.S.

"BAT-TOL ROYYYALE!"

I'm confused. Why are they forced to fight each other? Is it like Bizarro Children of the Corn? Is the death of this small group of children going to teach those remaining free a lesson?

Please advise. Over.

It's to set a bloody, bloody example for wayward youth everywhere, as regulated by Japan's new "Battle Royale Act."

Beat Takeshi explains it all, just before putting the first bullet between a chick's eyes.

It's like if Lord of the Flies had been an act of congress.

Has anyone ever seen the Jaimie Kennedy Experiment? They did a bit once where he pretended to be a TV producer working on a Survivor style reality TV show for children. But the goal of the show was to end up liek Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale, with the kids warring and killing one another. They got a handful of parents to sign their kids up, and apparently released the network to rebroadcast that fact.

You can already buy an region 0 NTSC anamorphic version of this film at www.pokerindustries.com. It's pretty bare-bones, but it is in DD5.1. The film transfer is pretty good.
