Is anyone else currently enjoying this? Any thoughts on favorite maps, servers, etc?

Too many cheats.
But it's great multiplayer, very crisp. My favorite map is brecourt or whatever, the one with the trenches, 88s and hedge wall. It's got very long shooting distances - but no sniper rifles, and it's also got trenches for the close combat.

Surprisingly I do not enjoy COD multiplayer at all. It seems very boring comapred to the single player game. There don't seem to be many variations either.

Is it one of those "run around the map and scoop up weapons" type games or is it more "choose your kit" ala Medal of Honor?

It's both. You choose a starting weapon, but then a limited number of the "good" weapons (like the scoped FG42) are somewhere in the map (like the Barrett .50 in Desert Combat, or the jet pack in Secret Weapons of WWII).

Perhaps it's because I play so much DoD, but I think the weapons really need to balanced batter.
The garand should be a 1 or 2 shot kill, but it's something like a 4-5 shot kill instead, wihch makes it somewhat useless. The BAR fire basically as straight and as far whether you're standing, running, or laying prone. The smaller guns, such as the Thompson, are far too accurate over too far a range. Oh, and players should be limited to 2 or 3 grenades.
However, it is still quite fun, just because some of the maps. My favorite is Carentan, with lots of buildings to snipe from, and lots of cover.

You're joking, right?
The Garand IS a 1 or 2 shot kill. One to the head, two to the chest. =]
The BAR doesn't fire straight at all when running, no more than any other gun. It sprays all over the place in a full run.

I've often emptied entire clips with the garand before killing someone within five metres of me (sorry, metric system).
I've killed a sniper laying prone with the BAR while standing. Maybe you're right about the running, though.

I heartily agree, but I've whined enough about that in the cheating thread. One of the best long range weapons in CoD is the BAR, set on slow auto. Even the iron sight is one of the easiest to use, since it is just a single verticle stick, like the Axis sniper scope in DoD. Put the thin part on your target's head, and pop off single shots. I've killed four guys in about two seconds that way.

I uninstalled CoD after finishing the solo game. The multiplayer offered me nada that I couldn't get from BF1942 and its mods, and was inferior to MOHAA IMO anyhow. Not terrible, just not distinctive in any way shape or form.

I dunno guys, I don't think balancing weapons would be the best idea. Maybe toning down the BAR, but the whole point was to have realistic weapons. The BAR is much more rifle than assault rifle, unlike the Sturmgewehr (MP44), and that shows. For long range I'd still take the Garand though.

The realism vs. gameplay debate on weapons has raged in the DoD community since day one. I'm all for gameplay. For instance, the Garand used to dominate since it had long range, killing power, and was semi-automatic. The Kar98 was totally outclassed by the semi-auto feature, since there really isn't much real world difference between the Kar's 7.92x57 round and the Garand's 7.62x51. So, the devs reduced the firing rate, damage, and accuracy of the Garand to offset the semi-auto ability. The argument still rages, but I think the two rifles are evenly matched now, making for a better game.
