View Full Version : Do you get annoyed when someone else uses your handle?

Lately this just annoys the hell out of me and I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's because I thought I had a fairly unique handle and I think I'm seeing people all over the place using it.

My handle is of rather dubious origin to begin with, and owes credit to various game developers for it's creation. When I got my first 2400 baud modem, I went to sign on to a local BBS, and the registration form there asked for a handle. I had no idea what that meant, and I disconnected, stumped, and asked one of my friends. He explained, in an appropriately condescending way, that people choose a different name for themself on these BBS's.

I went a couple days without deciding on a handle, but inspiration struck me as me and that same friend were playing a mean game of Rock & Roll Racing on the Super Nintendo. During the course of our play, I noticed that one of the upgrades you could purchase for your mean little racer was called Locust Jump Jets. I thought Locust sounded cool, so I signed up with that name, and the rest was history....

At least it was, until I got EverQuest, and I couldn't use Locust for some reason - whether it was because it was taken, or it was the name of a mob, I may never know, but I was faced with the frightening proposition of having to find a new handle. I opted to take the lazy way out and go with the phonetically similar, but improperly spelled, Lokust. It's been Lokust since then.

I suppose my biggest bitch is that I'm not nearly as unique or creative or whatever as I thought I was. It's also annoying to do a search for Lokust on google and see tons of stuff about other people. I think a year ago I could have practically used a google search on my handle as a resume of previous writing work.

Anyway, beyond all of this rambling, I was wondering if anyone else was annoyed by seeing their chosen handle used in games, message boards, websites, or anywhere else online.

I don't even use the same handle from place to place so I guess I'm not really all that attached to my handle(s). I might use Timemaster Tim when registering next. Then again I might not. If it's taken, no big deal.

<Insert your own "using your handle" joke here. I'm too lazy this morning.>

No biggie for me. Only so many words in the English language to go around. There's a lot of people on this planet.

You forgot the voting option for "Don't have that problem because I picked an uncommon enough online handle that not every Tom, Dick and Hax0r uses it."

There's someone on the GA forums who calls themself "Bub". I only get annoyed when I'm asked if that's me. (It's not.)

I find it odd that they'd have an upgrade feature called Locust Jump Jets. If I recall correctly, Locusts have a pretty fast walk/run speed, but no Jump Jets. {/mechgeek}

Other people use a biblically-referenced malevolent insect with the extra-edgy "k for c" spelling variant? Who knew?

God, I'm glad I'm not the only one who said "Locusts can't jump. WTF?"

Yeah well my battletech obsession came after the supernintendo years :)

It's never happened to me. Ever. That's one of the advantages of having a handle based on an obscure character class from a stupid and badly written RPG.

It's my own fault, really. I should have been more creative.

Can't really justify getting pissed off when I use something which would obviously be pretty common. Of course the _72 part of it makes it unique - (so far).

I also use a different handle on usenet.

Never happened to me since I use a rather uncommon nick. I'd be rather surprised than pissed.

His nom de frag may be different. For example, mine is completely different from what I use here.

Yeah, that's correct. I'm aware that "JD" isn't the pinnacle of uniqueness. ;)

Yeah, you forgot the option of "This does not happen to me because nobody picks "Guido Jones" as their alias besides me"

I find it more annoying when I can't put spaces or _ in my name to make it complete in games.

8/12/0 movement speed, IIRC.
