Fucking hell. So I've been trawling around for updated mobo drivers for my computers. I carefully matched the mobo to the manufacturer's drivers for a pair of my Win98 (non-SE) systems. I installed them. They installed and then asked to reboot. Easy enough.

Now I invariably get the following text on a black screen as Windows tries to load:

"Windows protection error. You need to restart you computer."

At which point I restart my computer and get the same message. I can start in safe mode. I can go step-by-step through all the steps and see that the problem doesn't kick in until after I've answered 'yes' to everything in the list. And I have no idea how to uninstall the frickin' mobo drivers from safe mode.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried to "Update Driver" from Safe Mode? Windows may find the old driver you had from the Win 98 files (the one it originally had installed). Otherwise, I'd re-install Windows. Draconian, I know.

Blame Savage.

Hit F8 and try selecting the 'BOOTLOG.TXT' option, and then after it freezes, go back and check the file and see if you can get an idea of what was trying to load at the time it froze. Or hell, post the bootlog.txt and maybe someone can figure out the cause of the problem.

I hate first edition 98 - it always pulled a lot of this shit on a lot of the systems I've worked on in the past.
