I have a friend who's a computer gaming neophyte, and who's encountered the usual problems that annoy the hell out of people new to computer games (vs. console games, of which he's already an addict) -- like installing drivers, etc.
I've been (remotely) helping him to clean up his computer by running Spybot, Google Toolbar to prevent pop-ups, showing him where to get updated sound/video drivers (his system is pretty new and high-end, although I don't know the specs other than he runs XP home on it). But he's encountered a problem that I can't explain -- when he tries to install Direct X 9.0, he gets a system message that states "cannot be installed on this version of Windows" -- again, he's running on XP, so that makes no sense. The only thing I can think of is that some virus has mucked up some system .dlls, but I was wondering if some of the gurus here can give a more informed opinion.
I don't know much more about his system specs (although can ask him), but I wouldn't be surprised if he's had all kind of crap shoved on his machine through unsafe surfing and not knowing anything about what not to do, etc.
