View Full Version : Games where I can just destroy a city

I'm looking for games where I can run around a city, picking up and tossing cars, climbing buildings, smashing them, and generally being a supervillian type antihero. Or, be a hero but inflict massive property damage and loss of life. Not with modern weapons necessarily, but with myself.

So far I have:

Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (2)
Prototype
Freedom Force 1 & 2

Any other games along this line? I've tried all of those and have an itching to chuck me some taxis into the sides of buildings.

Red Faction Guerrilla. You're using weapons to destroy, but the destruction is totally awesome and the weapons are completely superhero sci-fi type stuff.

Godzilla: Save the Earth. In which you erm, save the Earth by throwing large chunks of it at other monsters.

I would agree, and almost put that, but there is a lack of mobility in that game that is not exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I should have said "superhero game" but I didn't want to artificially limit it. Crackdown almost qualifies except you can't really destroy much in that game.

And probably there are modern versions of "Godzilla destroy everything".

I have never read or hear about this game...

If we are going to add monster fighting games I think War of The Monsters for PS2 qualifies, as it's the best one I've ever played.

On a bit smaller scale - a city block, there were X-Com terror missions. Also X-Com Apocalypse had missions where you could level apartment buildings, airports, etc.

This.

Also, X-com does meet the destruction quotient (if not the movement one).

EDF 2017 has a fair bit of destroy-izating in it. Weapons based though, not very personal.

There's also Robot Alchemic Drive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot_Alchemic_Drive), which could have been a great game except for its terrible, unskippable conversation scenes and completely nonsensical plot.

Elements of Destruction for XBLA is entirely about destroying cities.

But there you're various acts of nature (earthquates/tornados/lightning), not a person.

The horrible voice acting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJW2WiY_ULk#t=6m48s) was always part of the appeal for me, it's so bad it cracks me up.

Don't forget good old Crush, Crumble, and Chomp. My customized radiation-shooting moth ate a fuck of a lot of shrieking little people in that one, let me tell you.

Crush, Crumble, and Chomp was the first game I ever purchased for my C64. Jumpman was the 2nd. Epyx was on a roll in the early 80s.

Katamari Damacy, of course, allows you to roll entire cities up into a ball and send it into space.

And there's Rampage.

That's half the reason why it's a great game.

There's always I Was an Atomic Mutant!, where you can destroy a city as a giant lizard, a very tall woman, an alien in a bubble-domed robotic vehicle, or a floating brain.

If you haven't tried it yet, I'd suggest Sega's Hulk movie game (on 360 or PS3--the PC version is a PS2 port if I remember right). It has some issues, but the destruction aspect is loads of fun. Buildings can be destroyed entirely, and when you throw cars and stuff into buildings, they can get lodged in the facade. Also, civilians are immortal. You can pound on them forever and they'll just keep getting up and running in terror. Makes me wonder why you're supposed to be saving them if they're not in any danger.

Earth Defence Force 2017, although the cities are destroyed simply because the buildings are between the aliens and the massive unlimited firepower at your disposal.

Well well well, this just popped up on Blue's today: Demolition Company! (http://www.bluesnews.com/s/114706/demolition-company-announced)

Sure, why the fuck not? My three-year-old son will LOVE it :-D (Granted, I don't trust Tri Synergy any further than I can throw them, but maybe it'll be budget-priced.)

Boom Blox is great if you want to carefully plan your destruction. Just ignore everything that isn't throwing shit at blocks (which, unfortunately, is only half the game).

My friends and I loved Rampage: World Tour on the N64 with all the bizarre crap they added to it, like V.E.R.N. It was possibly the easiest game ever made, and was next to impossible to actually lose, but we always had a blast playing.

Attack of the 50ft Robot is pretty fun, though may not be at the level of production you're looking for. However, it is free and the 50s movie aesthetic is well done.
