"Now we have had 25 years of a failed Islamic revolution in Iran, and the people do not want an Islamic regime anymore."
It's not strictly necessary to speak to Hossein Khomeini to appreciate the latter point: Every visitor to Iran confirms it, and a large majority of the Iranians themselves have voted for anti-theocratic candidates. The entrenched and reactionary regime can negate these results up to a certain point; the only question is how long can they do so? Young Khomeini is convinced that the coming upheaval will depend principally on those who once supported his grandfather and have now become disillusioned. I asked him what he would like to see happen, and his reply this time was very terse and did not require any Quranic scriptural authority or explication. The best outcome, he thought, would be a very swift and immediate American invasion of Iran.
It hurt me somewhat to have to tell him that there was scant chance of deliverance coming by this means. He took the news pretty stoically (and I hardly think I was telling him anything he did not know). But I was thinking, wow, this is what happens if you live long enough. You'll hear the ayatollah's grandson saying, not even "Send in the Marines" but "Bring in the 82nd Airborne."

Interesting. I wonder how many countries have groups that would like for the U.S. to overthrow the current regime?

If by "groups" you mean the bulk of the populace, I'd say around ten or twelve, though that figure does not include intrastate separatist groups such as the EZLN, Tamil Tigers, and California Democrats.

Consider the Koontzian Analysis Machine to have been fed proper input.
I eagerly away output.

We don't got enough armed forces to take everyone out.
We better start a draft soon and get some of those ricer driving, hip hop listenin', no belt wearin' kids into uniform. Hell, they are already half trained on shooters!

I don't like Schröder, he's a slimeball and a fraud and his government wrecks the economy. Can't you please invade us? Thanks!

If you were French and hated Chirac we'd have a boyscout troop on the next plane over to do the job, but we're going to need some free Beamers and Bratworst before we commit to action in Germany (do you think we can get NATO support?). For now you could try sneaking into our base in Ramstein.

About half of the US, apparently.

I thought Fascists were good for the economy, at expense of freedom?

Huh? Schröder and his entire government are 1968 hardcore Russia-worshipping leftists who only mutated into quasi-moderates (by German standards, i.e. well left of Clinton) when they wanted to get elected.
Foreign minister Fischer actually was a street fighter back then, he threw stones at policemen and was involved (though apparently not directly guilty) when one police car was set on fire and an officer in the car suffered severe burns as a result. Oh, Fischer also nabbed books from a local bookstore while he was a student at Frankfurt and tried to sell them off later. He apparently never actually read any books, though.
Of course, feel free to install a real fascist government after the invasion, the economy can only get better and there's not much freedom left to lose anyway...

And who called him out on it? Ulrike Meinhof's daughter. (right? that's the way I remember it)
You can't get those kind of politics with some installed puppet-regime.

Correct, Meinhof's daughter researched Fischer's past and published the book that set the stone rolling. Nobody really cared, though -- Fischer is as popular as ever.

Yes, what's a couple of thousand dissidents killed or tortured when the economy is recovering.

That beats "I didn't inhale" any day of the week. Quite a jump there from possible involvement in assaulting police officers and arson to stealing some books....

Oh, I must be confused. There was some big hoopla over here about right-wingers getting elected in Germany. Or was that Austria? Those dirty Austrians, home of the Fuhrer and all... ;)

Indeed. I believe you are thinking of Jorg Haider in Austria.

Of course it could just as well have been France, or Italy, or Belgium, or Denmark.
