What's the most you'd spend on sneakers? Me: $29.95. Anything over that and you might just be a wanna-be hip hop teen.

What's the most you'd spend on a tasteful leather recliner? Apparently for me it's about half of what one costs. I sat on a Pottery Barn Manhattan Leather recliner a couple of weeks ago and it was amazingly comfortable. And it's the first recliner my wife liked the looks of. But it's roughly $2 grand. Uh, no.
$600 or $700, maybe.

Not exactly a recliner, but 20 years ago I spent $400 on one of these:

It's still my favorite. My kids' too evidently, because I keep chasing them off of it. Unfortunately, these days it will probably run you about 7 or 8 times what I paid for it.

...a comic book? I spend $300 buying X-men #1 with my paper route money back in 1982.

I hope you sold it by the time 1992 came around :)

Heh, nope. I'll probably never sell it. On the other hand, it's one of the few comics that didn't decline in price post-92

....on a monitor?
I spent a little over $3,000 on a Nanao FX2-21 in 1996. Rock solid text at 1600x1200, it was worth it.

I spent about the same, although in CDN$, on Sony GDM F-500 in 98. It's still my primary monitor, so I guess it was worthwhile.
On a single ski run? 80 dollars.
It was august, and I was late to the mountain, a 200 mile drive.

Not so. A good pair of Nike walking sneakers go for $50-60, and I'll gladly pay it, because they last more than twice as long as any $30 pair of shoes that I have ever bought. Sticker price isn't the only factor when it comes to good value.

You should troll through Famous Footwear. You'll find Nike walking shoes for $30 or less.
A computer game? $40.

I guess the term sneakers doesn't include running shoes, or I'd feel sorry for your knees. The ones I'm using for jogging cost 140 euro, and they're the reason why my joints no longer hurt after a jog.
As for monitors, I'm still using the NEC MultiSync LCD 1810 which was one of the first 18" LCD models back in 1998 and cost a whopping 4,000 euro in today's currency. Was well worth it, though...

Bah, I got excellent Reeboks on clearance for $19.99 and picked up two pairs. Use them for tennis and they do a great job keeping my feet and knees in shape.

I don't think I've ever paid less than $150 for running shoes/sneakers. But I don't wear them as casual shoes, which I think is what you're talking about, they're actually just for running, like Nahr was talking about.
Work shoes? Generally between $250-$700, although I do tend to wear them casually, and re-sole them once.
A computer game? $40.
$119 for SWG Collectors' Edition, but I guess I can get about half of that back since it's a tax write off, as I reviewed it. For non-reviewed games, I used to pay a ton for the old SSI wargames in the 80s -- I think I paid about $85 for SSI's Carrier Force, for instance.
Game prices have been remarkably stable over the past 10-14 years, though.

Work shoes between $250 and $700?? I gasp! What the heck kind of work do you do when you're not reviewing games?

Pricey shoes, but if they are good quality, the uppers can last for years. Why do you only resole them once? I would try to stretch that investment for as long as possible.

See, I used to do that, too, and I agree that they are about as comfortable as the shoes I buy now. But they just don't last long. I've had cheap pairs of shoes (Addidas, Reebok, weird brands that you've never heard of) start to fall apart in as little as six months, and they almost never last more than a year. I've had my current shoes for a year and a half, and they are still in good shape. A bit worn, but still solid. So now I look at it as a "dollars per month" sort of thing. By that metric, the $19.99 shoes are no bargain.

Yeah, there's nothing more pleasant (no matter HOW good your personal hygeine) than a pair of shoes with a few good years on 'em.
There's some benefit to these thing wearing you, you know...
I usually buy a pair of Nikes every year. I spend $60 or so on them, and thats at the outlet store. They usually last me for a year.

I definitely try and stretch it - I just find that after being resoled once, by the time they're due again (2-3 years after the initial purchase), the leather has invariably to the point where it doesn't look as nice.

My last "main" pair of shoes I spent about $200 on. I wore them for about 6 years before they finally were too worn out. Good shoes last a long time. Cheap shoes fall apart.

Hey! My shoes don't smell. You can clean and deoderize shoes, you know. I'm sure you keep plenty of other articles of clothing for years, and don't consider it unpleasant.
But still, the point was that Midnight Son was saying that he spends less than I do on shoes, and I think he's wrong, because he probably buys shoes more often than I do.

Factor in inflation and the price of PC games has plummeted. In the early 90's I was plunking down 55 bucks a game for Railroad Tycoon, Civ, Castles etc. There was no gogamer discounting. You went to EB, paid your 50 large, and took it home. Roll forward 10 years. I now order the majority of my games via gogamer. Most of the time this is on 48 hour madness sales or occasionally their full price. This is usally in the low to high 30's. This is for BG 2, NWN, C&C, Warlords etc. Factor in inflation and I might be paying 1/4 to 1/3 of what I used to pay for computer games. This has been the most shocking change in the industry in my opinion in the last 10 years. Graphics are the only other thing I think has changed so much. Computer gaming is a relatively cheap hobby. I am always amazed at console prices. They are consistently 20-30 dollars more per game then PC games it seens to me these days.

I buy quality shoes on clearance and they last me a good long time. I readily admit I'm so cheap that the idea of spending $200 on a pair of shoes makes me hyperventilate! It's different priorities, I reckon. I have no problem spending $5999 on my plasma tv. :)
It's all about oakley. The best industrial design over the past ten years hands down. Shoes, boots, glasses, watches...
