Pain - I really messed up

PLease, please, Bill D. or others that don't want to read a downer about my health please skip - I won't be offended I promise. I need help.

I've been struggling to get rid of this pneuomonia, I'm on week 3. To try and help fight this off I've gone on a really heathly eating kick to help boost my immune system. I've been having fruit smoothies every day as a substitute for one meal. Today I made what I thought would be my most healthy smoothie yet, a Coconut-Banana smoothie. 1/2 cup of coconut milk, one banana, cup of coconut meat, crushed ice, 2 scoops of ice cream. Fun breaking apart and all that.

I forgot somethin dreadfully important, or I'd prefer to think simple didn't understand. The "milk" inside is more of an "oil" than Skim Milk product. Ther'es a alot of oils in the meat. My pancrease and liver can't handle much oil, noand now I know middle fatty acid chain whatevermabobs they call them. My belly looks like the Mount St. HElens pre-eruption. Jen wanted to take me to the hospital but I can't take it psychologically. It's like going to prison sometimes even though they take good care of me. The thing is, I wait all winter long counting down the days until I get to work on the Pond and Frop Bogs, and then this disease totally screws up my plans.

If I go in, even for a couple of days it will be weeks before I recover the endurance and sntrength I've lost.

PLease, can anyone give me more advice on continous pain control? My doc will give me whatever strtength I ask for but I have capped mself at a specific strtength of a med and I'm not sure if I should talk about thr specirfics or not. I
m a flipping mess and I can barely type, my parents are worried sick (I feel terrible about this too!)> Arggh. ALl because of a Cocnut Smoothie - I've been trying so hard and I screw it all up.
Sorry to keep going o, it's not Ambien, but I can just barely sit up. If anyone can give me any tips - if I can power through the next cupld days of pain til this settles down by not eating, maybe I can make it.

It's a minimum of 10% milk fat just to be legally called ice cream. Premium brands get as high as 30% milk fat. If oil does you wrong, I'd think the ice cream surely isn't helping.

.5 cup coconut milk has 24.1g of fat, 21.4g of them from saturated, long-chain fats. Let's say he had 7 fl oz of ice cream (about 2 average-sized scoops), that's only 12.8g of fat, and only 7.9g is saturated fats.

I'm gonna say it was the coconut milk that did it.

With my sciatica, before I became a neurostim-cyborg, I was on a ton of methadone. The thing is, your body can take large amounts of opiates--if you build up slowly and then, when you don't need them anymore, wean off slowly.

If you start on, say, 45mg a day of methadone, you'll die that day. But if you start at 15mg a day, and build up by 5mg every couple of weeks, you'll tolerate it, and you'll even be able to do stuff. Eventually, it keeps the pain away without messing with your brain.

When you go off it, wean at the same rate (5mg every couple of weeks) and you won't experience withdrawal. I'm off the methadone entirely now, and only take occasional, short-acting oxycodone for breakaway pain.

If you don't go to the hospital, Jeff, see your doctor REALLY soon, for pain control at the very least. If you don't have a pain management specialist, I suggest you try to find one.

I'm no doctor, just a dude working in a medical lab, culturing stuff like the multi-resistant, (probable, and potentially mucoid strain) pseudomonas species, but I can certainly understand the degree of just how complex the treatment for a single organism is. Add to this the possible effects of pain relief, including the interactions of all the drugs, the physiology associated with CF, and the scenario that plays out is a very complex picture that must be carefully managed (ie: hospital admission) as the majority of people in this thread have stipulated, as I personally indicated in a PM, as well as others I am sure.

JP, I know you hate how much this shit rules your life, how one slip-up can fuck everything up and leave your life in control of doctors and medications and procedures. Believe me, man, if anybody gets it, it's me - I know how unbearable it can be to feel like your entire life is lived to a schedule of medical catastrophe and treatment - but your wife is right. You need to go to the hospital and get well again.

I think we've talked about this before, but you've got to remember, in addition to everything else, that it's not just you this affects - your wife, your friends, and your family all suffer when you're in obvious pain and don't take the necessary steps to treat it. I have found that I get some improvement in my CF by using a vaporizor which heats the marijuana to between 185 to 215 degrees fahrenheit and mixes the uncombusted fumes of released THC with ambient air allows me to get more productive coughs without any increased mucus production the next day. I am extremely careful to not let it heat to over 215 degrees because it begins to release non-beneficial chemicals at around 235 degrees.

Some offer mild support, but they are all teenagers (in fairness, that is how old most CF patients live to be before they die). Nobody mentions pain relief.

My boyfriend has CF and he eats pot butter in foods, ie, brownies, cookies, etc. instead of smoking, like most people think. He is 30 years old this year, has about 35% lung function right now, and lives life to the fullest. He swears that within an hour of ingesting the thc rich herb, he coughs a ton and gets major clearance. I can't tell you how many times he has told me it really works.

And trust me, he's so conservative, if it wasn't for CF, he would have been a cop.:)

He and his mother came in to see me because he had used cannabis in the past to specifically treat the heart burn and joint pain that he suffered on a daily basis. In addition he claimed that when he inhaled cannabis into his lungs using a vaporizer it helped to clear out some of the mucus that patients develop on a regular basis. He wanted to see if becoming a medical marijuana patient was possible.

This 19 y/o patient uses numerous medications to loosen the mucus secretions in his airways. At the time of my evaluation he was being treated for active tuberculosis which is not uncommon in patients with CF. Because of the thickened mucus in his airways, bacteria typically can grow without an appropriate immune response. All of these medications that he was taking was causing nausea, GERD, lack of appetite and joint pain. For his pain he was prescribed oxycontin and given trazodone to help him sleep. His mother was concerned about the high addictive properties in opiate narcotics and wanted her son off them.

Cannabis was an excellent supplement to his medication regimen. He will be able to stop taking oxycontin for pain. He will be able to eliminate the trazodone for sleep. In addition his appetite will certainly improve and his GERD symptoms should be reduced greatly. Not that this compares at all to a chronic illness and constant hospital stays, but I had both ears operated on one time where they cut behind them, flipped them forward and drilled out bone and re-built hearing bones (unfortunately, not replaced with bionics). The point is, it was about an 8 hour procedure and I was signed up for 23-hour observation to leave the next morning.

My want to get the hell out of there trumped the pain and nausea and my brain tricked me into thinking I could make it. When I got home, I was miserable for a week, but at least I was home with my stuff.

I wasn't asking for medical advice, I was trying to ask how people deal with chronic pain. I'm obviously a terrible writer and that didn't come across at all. But once in a while it is worth it for me to try and power through. I could spend most of my life in the hospital so at some point you have to ask yourself what kind of life one is choosing with the hand I've been dealt.

One other problem with hospitals... for many patients, but especially for Cystic Fibrosis patients is you're playing Russian Roulette. It is so easy to pick up hospital-born infections that each day it's a roll of the dice. My hospital is much better than most, but it's just a fact of life.

In the first post I tried to dissuade anyone who didn't want to read medical stuff to turn away, yet some of you didn't and proceeded to say how ridiculous I am. I try to put on a brave front at times, but it's not easy, especially when things spiral out of control. Obviously I am terrified of dying or being permanently incapacitated and that's certainly a character fault I hope I can overcome someday.

For those of you that deal with chronic pain and want to continue a discussion on how you mentally compensate (and medication-wise), I'd be very thankful for the discussion. Especially Acid an Quatoria who I knew had major issues, but of course anyone with these issues is welcome. Particularly what do you do when you have a massive spike in pain for a day or two?

I have dealt with pretty massive Post-Concussive Syndrome, which exhibited itself for about two and a half years with intense sudden-onset headaches that would come out of nowhere. Painkillers could dull the pain if I could take them in time, but even that generally meant 15 minutes to an hour of stabbing pain in my noggin.

For me, what eventually worked was reducing the triggers that brought on the headaches. Controlling my blood pressure, starting the process of losing the excess weight that contributed to the blood pressure (as well as exacerbating my already-existing reflux), and reducing the amount of general emotional stress that tended to bring on the headaches.

I'm not sure how much any of that would apply to your situation, not being very familiar with CF. But if there are particular actions, stressors, or stimuli that tend to cause trouble - the best thing to do is lessen or avoid them.

Don't just try and tough it out. You've got every right to do what you need to in order to live as pain-free as you can. If you have to dose up on Ambien, I highly suggest posting to QT3, because that's always a hoot.

But you did seem like you wanted real advice on how to dodge the hospital, and people gave you horrible horrible advice. I just want to say that I just got over 12 weeks of onset-pneumonia (it never quite developed, but I could not breathe well for several weeks in there) that had me end up in the hospital too. I made it through by drinking a lot of mango juice, repairing the waterfall in the backyard so it would sooth my tension, and with the massive amount of Albuterol that was administered at the hospital, and self-administered with breather for weeks afterward. Not sure if this will help. I hope you get better soon.
