Here's something I posted on another forum... thought you guys would dig it too:

My favorite thing to do in this game is drive around and find interesting locations. I try to find a car with the least amount of tint in the windshield and is convertible... so I can pan my head around while driving to see things of interest.

What is a good car for this? I'd like a very clear windshield, convertible, and with as little frame around the windshield as possible. Right now I'm using this convertible Audi, but the rim is pretty thick on it.

I love being able to drive around Ibiza rendered in this much quality. It reminds me a lot of when I was scootering around Santorini in the off-season. Very similar environments, but a much larger island. Much like Assassin's Creed, it's so awesome to be able to fully explore such amazing cities and environments that are rendered so meticulously.

Anyways, here's a few of the things I've found driving around (sorry for the horrible quality):

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e122/flyinj23/TDUBeach.jpg
A beach I found driving at the end of a road near the northern part of the island.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e122/flyinj23/TDURuins.jpg
A perspective on ruined wall I found by driving across these really narrow embankments above salt pools near the airport.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e122/flyinj23/TDUView.jpg
A great view

Sunset over the hill one of my houses is on. Notice the pixelated airplane flying by.

Someone on another forum suggested I get the Ariel Atom 300. It's basically a hyper-charged dune buggy with no windscreen whatsoever. The perfect car for unrestrained cockpit viewing. It's actually kind of a hilarious car... you can see the asphalt moving underneath you as you drive it.

Now, if only they got TrackIR working in this....

I feel the obligation to urge you guys and girls to backup your savegames. For anyone who's interested and hasn't discovered this yet, someone on the TDU2 Forums made a Savegame Backup Tool.

The thread is here:

http://forums.testdriveunlimited2.com/showthread.php?t=29384 (http://forums.testdriveunlimited2.com/showthread.php?t=29384)

The direct download link is here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2824213/TDU2SavegameBackup.exe (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2824213/TDU2SavegameBackup.exe)

Please be cautious and use this software at your own risk, as I can't vouch for it. Just thought it's a good idea, but I still backup manually.

P.S.
I think I want the girl who does Tess Wintory's voice dead. Should I seek help with my homicidal tendencies or should I indulge myself and possibly many other people?

EG reports the 360 patch is due in 2 weeks: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-18-test-drive-unlimited-2-patch-in-2-weeks

I was hoping for a bit sooner and thinking of buying the game, warts and all, today. But I'm not sure I want to live 2 weeks with the risk of corrupted save games on my 360 hanging over my head. Choices...

You can always backup your TDU2 save if you have a flash drive with a capacity greater than or equal to 1GB.

EDIT: Any game with a single save slot (especially autosave) can easily have a corrupted save file, unless that's been foreseen by the developers.

Two weeks! Wow.

Well, I definitely won't be going back to this game for a while. Bulletstorm then Crysis 2 are next up.

Definitely. Though when it's a known issue listed in the patch fix list, it feels a bit more critical than: It could happen if your XBox crashes at the wrong time.

Seriously, 2 weeks with that and the other issues is a bit discouraging. I still really like the idea of the game and am still tempted though.

Last Update: February 18, 10:00PM PST

We have been very happy with the results of the recent patch, and will be pushing another patch tonight at 1AM PST (0900 GMT) which contains the following improvements:

Friends list should no longer disappear
Friend invites should consistently work
Club issue should be fixed, Clubs should go live some time after the patch is released
Further enhancements to prevent file corruption
Additional back-end functionality to recover previously corrupted save files

Yaaay for progress!

Direct 2 Drive has this for 31.99 with a President's Day sale "hailtothechief" coupon, according to RPS. Oh, and according to the banner right on D2D's page.

Steam doesn't handle any multiplayer stuff for this, does it? No reason not to get it a different way?

And it sounds like the PC version is the one getting patches faster for a change? Hmm...

I was driving today for some 6 hours (and I will for a few more) and I absolutely positively love this game, it might in fact be my favourite driving game ever.

It certainly is the closest to my racing dreamgame, even if it is not completely there (my ideal driving game would have more emphasis on cop chases).

On the PC at least, it works flawlessly (online profile), looks amazing and plays too. I am using x360pad though, I know wheel owners are not satisfied yet.

Because I am a) not much of a driving game player, and b) an idiot, I've been using the keyboard as I don't have either of those. It's actually been pretty good - well, perfectly tolerable at least - but now I'm trying to get my licence for the A2 and A3 races and things are looking a bit grim. The licence tests are waaay harder than any competition I've been in before, and it's starting to feel like a brick wall challenge: bang my head against it a hundred times till I break through.

I'm pretty sure this is the limitation of using the keyboard though, as I've won every competition up to now without too much difficulty on Sport (some of the time trials are rather punishing, but the races aren't particularly hard), but that's with either 2 or 3 / 5 difficulty cars. The higher difficulty ones are just crazy hard to stop them spinning. I bought an Aston Martin DB9 and could barely get around the track, so traded it for some Audi that had much less power but was so much easier to handle, and that got me through the competitions nicely.

I agree with you though, I've been loving the game, it's really quite remarkable how well they've created the world and all the cars. One unforgivable sin however: non-skippable camera angles every time you restart a race. Have they learned nothing from TrackMania?

I picked this up the other day since Xaroc and dailin have been playing it - but then I didn't know matchmaking was kinda borked and the clubs apparently don't work. Still it was cheaper than a normal full priced release $49.99 compared to some games that retail for twenty more up here.

Somethings I'm liking....

1. It is fairly nice to just hit the road and cruise though I'm finding the night cycle occurring too often for my tastes. With a wheel it can be quite fun.
2. The douchebag simulator is an amusing diversion every so often and so far the only non-fleckless piece of shit I've met is the off-road racing instructor. Everyone else is a walking bag of guppy. Of course it does have some drawbacks for instance why can my chick-driver* only wear heels?

Things I dislike...

1. It seems like they made a driving game and then decided at the end that they'd add a layer of faux racing - absolutely none of these races are ever close as unless I smack into a tree a few times I win by miles and miles. Sure I'm glad there isn't any rubber banding but there is no challenge.
2. Limited garage space? Bleh.
3. The FLIM system is a joke.
4. All of two radio stations with few songs? Simply inexcusable at least until I figure out how to get some custom music playing on the 360 like this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLfRey__6Wk&feature=fvst)

* (I'm playing as a girl because in that opening dance cutscene the guy had such lack of zest and dancing skills that he reminded me of myself and I didn't want to find out that I'm a total douche as I drove my way into insanity)

Marcin

I picked it up on Direct 2 Drive with the 20% off, and am very glad I did. It still has the *amusing* physics problems where, when you crest a hill, you lose so much downforce you pretty much fly off the track but it's a lot better than the first game where you would well, literally fly off. Ibiza looks great, the dirt is a fantastic addition, and the stable of cars is a hoot.

I think I hate the Golf GTI though. I can't even come close to controlling it in any race, and so far it's the only car that's giving me grief (got a Lotus Esprit, the Tuareg, and a WRX so far).

One thing about the horrible voice acting and attitudes - I feel no compunction about swapping paint (and more) with my opponents. :P

So I'm watching the Omnibus simulator (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/02/21/omnibus-driving-simulator-is-impressive/) trailer on RPS and I must say that by comparison, the TDU2 engine sounds are beyond amateur hour. You can hear the digitalised pitch shift in most cars, and some almost sound like 70s spaceship engine SFX. :/

I own Golf GTI and it is a bit unstable, but I was able to win everything I tried (2 tournaments or so) with it, on x360pad and hardcore settings. I love my Subaru Impreza though : ).

I think it is intentionally hilariously bad, like a parody. I enjoy these scenes.
Hell I had to laugh at the hilarity of getting my car washed !

Marcin

Yeah, I'm using a 360 pad but it feels a little off sometimes. I can't really figure out how - or I'd try to fix it - but it works for most cars, just not the GTI. I barely tap it at speed and I skid off the road; and if I try to drive "properly" I'm losing seconds on every turn.

With other cars, my experience is like above - I typically come in 5-10 seconds ahead of everyone else. Which is nice and relaxing too, since I'm not the best of racers and tend to wipe out a lot :P

It took me longer than I hoped today, but just finished first in the VIP Tourney at the casino for $2,000,000 in cash plus a unique car, the Spyder.

I don't know if I am more excited about that or the fact that I was able to play in the casino with no hiccups for a change. Now we just need the club going on the 360.

Try the Brera. I too had the Golf, but when I switched it for a Brera, all my problems magically went away.

And I actually used a MiTo for the A7 stuff, proving that they're all viable. To me, though, the Golf on PC doesn't handle as well as it seems to on 360.

Okay, well, I used a Golf on a friend's XBox and had a very hard time with the very first A7 time trial. When I got my own copy on PC, I used a Brera (if you compare the stats it's the most powerful A7) and finished that very time trial with ten or so seconds to spare. I used the same Brera for the time trial you're referring to.

Good luck.

The 360 version of the game arrived today. I have some of you on my friends list but not the ones playing this game, I think.

Is there a roster of people playing it and their Live handle? Also, do I need to do something beyond adding you to my XBL friends list to have you as friends in the games?

Hey, have fun starting your own club that doesn't work! Because I shelled out fifty big ones to start a club the day the game came out. At which point Atari padlocked it because they couldn't be arsed to release a finished game. :(

Suffice to say, as soon as the update goes live and presumably enables our bitchin' clubhouse, I'll be hopping online to unlock some of those social achievements with you guys. Which includes filling out the club's membership roster. Until then, clubs do bupkis and I'm afraid I can't send out invites.

Also, the patch has been submitted for certification on the 360 and PS3 and clubs will be online as soon as it goes live. Par-tay!

Also also, it seems like the patch might be able to fix some of the corrupted save games.

It certainly is the closest to my racing dreamgame, even if it is not completely there (my ideal driving game would have more emphasis on cop chases).
I drove for hours yesterday and loved it too. The mix of just being able to explore and go see places, to take on missions or enter events is great.

One thing I like about the missions is those people who must absolutely go to an important meeting on time and then get you to drop them off in the middle of nowhere. Or the cars that need to go for maintenance which you drop near a stack of containers. It nearly makes me suspect I'm a driver for a gang taking people to drug deals and delivering stolen cars to be sent to Lithuania. :)

The game is cheesy. But it's one of the things that made my wife keep watching me play. She also insisted we find new shops and hairdressers as she couldn't stand my look. So the douchebag simulator got some laughs out of us.

I ended the night on the first B4 offroad championship that your instructor sends you to. Specifically, on the race against the clock going down the winding mountain roads. Didn't help that I was trying it at night in the rain. But I was ready to beg for mercy by the time I finally placed 3rd.

I got a police call to chase an offender but then couldn't quite figure out how to locate him/her. Sounded like fun though.

It's definitely the kind of game I'll enjoy messing around in and will keep coming back to. I hope they fix the clubs soon.

Wendelius

PS: Sent TommyTuTone an XBL friend request. Do I need to send a separate one in game too?

Didn't help that I was trying it at night in the rain.
Is there another way? Seriously, the damned event is called the 'Solar Crown' and it's like you're just racing for the grand prize of a passport that will eventually let you escape from this godforsaken island and into a magic kingdom where you might actually see a ray of sunshine. The set of a Serbian war movie is positively full of cheerful vistas compared to this place.

Marcin
02-26-2011, 09:05 AM
Yeah, I have not figured out yet whether some races are canned and others utilize current world weather state, but I did enjoy being able to switch from rainy Ibiza to sunny Oahu at will.

Wendelius
02-26-2011, 09:24 AM
I'm pretty sure the start conditions of those races are canned. However, they don't stop time. I had to try that event so many times that, on my last attempt, the thunderstorm had dissipated and the sky was getting a tiny bit lighter. Seems to me that another couple of attempts and I might have raced at sunrise.

I somewhat take back this about A2/A3 cars being hard - it's the licence tests that are a massive pain when using a keyboard, not the competitions. With the keyboard you either have full throttle or none, and with the amount of power this class of car puts out going through tight corners (slaloms!) without wheel spin is nearly impossible. You can put on Full Assist outside of the tests, but in the tests it's forced to Sport, which seems a bit mean-spirited.

I finally managed to get that licence, and got a Ferrari 458 Italia - my god is that a nice car! It's astonishingly good, handles better at 250-300Kph than most of the other cars I've tried at 150kph. I won almost all the races first try (which meant the licence test was harder and took longer than the competitions combined >.>). It looks pretty damn good too, and is breathtakingly quick. I thought I'd not like the Ferraris, on account of them being a bit boring, but the performance has totally won me - I'll have trouble going past the Enzo I think.

http://forums.testdriveunlimited2.com/showthread.php?t=42755

Save file corruption today. Other features (including clubs at last) on Monday.

Last Update: March 10, 5:00PM PST

Loyal TDU2 Fans,

Thank you for making TDU2 a huge success worldwide. We’ve reached the top of the sales charts in many territories and continue to work diligently on making TDU2 the best persistent-world racing game on console and PC.

The first of our game optimizations for console will be live tonight on Xbox 360 at 1am PT (9am GMT) and PS3 is soon to follow. This update will resolve a corruption issue that some players experienced with their saved game files. In some cases corrupted files will be automatically repaired.

Available on Monday, 3/14 at 1am PT (9am GMT) will be a patch that should address many of the outstanding concerns that some of the community experienced on PS3 and Xbox 360.

List of fixes:

* Improve login process to allow a higher volume of successful connections
* Increase online stability across all multiplayer functionality
* Improve performance and stability of Friends List and Friend Invites
* Enable Club and MyTDULife functionality
* Enable Co-Op races
* Enable weather while offline
* Address an issue where players can get a Lancia which has no car data (the patch should prevent this from occurring in the future, and restore players who are currently affected by the issue)

We have worked diligently to stabilize the network and address log-in issues. Friends lists will now be populated, invites will work correctly and Clubs will be brought back online. The Casino has been optimized and the bug causing players to lose money has been resolved. We have also addressed many of the exploits in the game and will be monitoring cheating in all its forms.

The TDU2 community has been a great support to the development team and we look forward to rewarding your loyalty soon with free DLC content. We should be able to provide dates once Microsoft and Sony approve the content and will update the community as soon as they are expected to go live.

Best,

The TDU2 Development Team

What's a good quick way to earn money in this? In the old game there were a few races you could farm. I haven't found much so far. Also, do dealerships not show up at all until you drive past them? I seem to remember them being kind of grayed out in the first one. Not having a clue as to where they are is gonna make them hella tough to find.

There has been talk earlier of a QT3 PC club. I want.

EDIT: They seem to be doing a crappy job with keeping the community up to date. A free DLC with the Lancia Stratos and Dodge Challanger was mentioned, but I haven't heard much more about it, let alone a release date. I figure they should at least have a car pack out by now. Even though it's got around 100 cars or something, chances are most players will only like half of them.

Back to the community, there are barely any good news on the forums regarding fixing some of the retarded things in the game. Such as spinning wheel textures - which we all agree look like crap, custom radio stations and an adjustable seat position for the interior view (which actually there was in TDU1).

I don't get it. It's like Eden collected all the money they could from people who have already bought the game and fled... to Oahu or Ibiza. If I see them while cruising in my 458 Italia, I won't hesitate to sacrifice its front bumper to run them over.

Hope I get a GOURANGA money bonus which will buy me a yacht.

WHO'S WITH ME? COME ON! YEEAAAAH.

Wasn't the patch on Friday and the stuff to enable clubs supposed to be done on the back end today? I got the impression there wouldn't be another patch for the clubs.

The second patch is supposed to fix the weather while offline, so it's not just backend stuff. It is kind of odd that they'd do it as two separate patches though, unless they intended to get the save corruption patch out much sooner and approval wound up taking much longer than expected.

Nope. There is a second patch. Clubs might get enabled in the back end, but they weren't last time I checked. And the patch notes seemed to suggest we should receive a patch at 9am which would unlock all the new functionality (like offline weather) as well as fix some casino bugs.

A GM on the TDU2 forum has confirmed he was trying to find out when the patch would be out.

Yeah, they screwed us once on the 360, our platform of choice, so we should just buy a second copy of their game! That's a great plan!

Seriously, though, it's cool you guys on the PC are having a great time. But my platform of choice is the 360, partly because I drive from the couch (where I will NOT be hooking up a PC any time in the near future because I'm only 2/3 the geek Paul cze is!) and partly because I have folks on my Xbox Live friends list I want to play with. Instead, I'll just nerdrage occasionally while Atari and Eden get their act together.

It might not be faultless, but the things that are being fixed by the patch that comes out tomorrow on consoles were fixed few weeks ago on PC. The certification process can take a long time, if the game in question isn't huge title like Gears of War or something.

That is absolutely not the question. The certification process is beside the point. In fact, it's the very process that should ensure we don't get games in this state. It has clearly failed. Whether you had to wait two weeks or a month for a fix doesn't matter. Eden and Atari screwed the porch by releasing the game in the state it was in.

Also, while I'm at it, Fallout: New Vegas remains unplayable for me on the Xbox 360. Glad to see that long, drawn-out, meticulous certification process is working so well!

But the last few weeks have been fine, I am already level 32 or so.The certification process seems like a pointless chore to be honest. Update: The patch has been pushed to all US Xbox Live Servers, but hasn't reached all the European servers yet.

We are waiting for the patch to reach all the servers, and then we will flip the switch on our end that "activates" the DLC, forcing all the clients to update. Until then, you can download the file, but you can't patch your client yet.

Since all players are on the same server, we can't flip the switch yet, or it would lock out the players who don't have the patch available yet (it's a mandatory DLC, meaning that in order to play online, you need to have the update).

I don't know who's in charge, but they've put on quite the show to entertain us.

Once the switch was finally flipped, some people have reported the game running well. But the forum also has a lot of reports of the game freezing up or crashing, as well as some of the features supposedly fixed not being fixed at all.

So the GM's on the forum are gathering information on the crashes...

This was all obviously perfectly tested and executed.

I am generally wary of patch day for online games. But needless to say I'm not going near TDU2 until things are a tiny bit less muddy.

Did you download the "Mandatory 01" pack from the add-on marketplace? I think that's needed in order to play online now, though it will still work offline without it. (I have no idea what justifies the 160+ MB of this DLC though, considering the small list of official fixes, unless it also contains stuff to be unlocked in the future.)

I played for a bit last night and didn't run into any trouble, though I've only just barely started. I don't think I like the 'feel' of Ibiza as much as Hawaii, though I still have a lot of it to explore. If the 360 clubs are working again, could you please add HalibutBarn?

The exclusivity is getting kind of silly. Apparently the 458 Italia isn't in the 360 version because Sony paid to make it exclusive (I guess Sony just shrugged when asked if that included the PC), trying to put Ferrari and Lamborghini in the same game drives them nuts and skyrockets the licensing costs (hence why Shift 2 won't have any Ferraris), and Porsche is still wedded to EA. You have to have the clout and money of someone like Microsoft to break through it all, and even Sony still can't woo Porsche away.

Hey Everyone,

Tonight we have maintenance on all three platforms. The maintenance begins at 1:30AM PDT (0930 GMT) and should last about an hour.

* We are deploying a fix candidate for the crashing of the CRC. This patch should resolve the issue where the CRC intermittently becomes unavailable.
* A server-side optimization is being applied which is designed to drastically improve online performance.
* A server-side optimization is being applied which is designed to drasitically improve the performance of Clubs on 360 and PC (this update was already applied to the PS3 platform last night)

During the maintenance, the CRC, Club, and News servers will go down intermittently. The core game will remain online without interruption.

We are excited about these updates are are looking forward to your feedback once the server-side patches have been deployed. Once the maintenance completes, we'll open up the thread to hear your comments.

I must have spent a half-hour scouring the map looking for where I'd missed for 100% road exploration in Ibiza Area 1, and it turned out to be some little off-ramp that's hard to make out on the map. TDU2 doesn't seem as forgiving as TDU1 that way, where I got the achievement even though I knew I had a bunch of other small unexplored fragments.

That unlocks the level 4 tuning, though I haven't actually had to apply any yet for the single-player challenges. It's almost time to head to Hawaii though, where that might change...

Mr. Mistake - great fun today! The voice chat ingame is really finnicky though, dropping out all the time etc..
Btw the wonderful Zonda ad I was talking about - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgdQRzpd6IE now I am going to watch it again for the nth time:).

Thanks for this. The video is nice but what I got out of it was that awesome dubstep track.

I finally played a four hour block of this game on Sunday and realized how great it is when everything works. Multiplayer was smooth. Instant challenges were fun. Even the goofy singleplayer stuff was decent.

It's really too bad they blew the launch and left it messed up for so long. This could've been a much bigger deal if the word-of-mouth on it hadn't been completely negative.

I spent dozens and dozens of hours on the game, it is probably my favourite driving game ever (closest to my ideal one so far). But I have level 42 or so, all SP stuff done, most of the world discovered and now it is time to move on...Shift 2 will arrive this week : ).

But I will still ocasionally fire it up just to drive around Ibiza...really love that island ingame. Not too keen on Oahu though.

CSL's game diaries are bang on the money. This game hides its most appealing aspects under a tangle of incomprehensible design decisions. Yet, under favorable conditions, it's a joy to play.

In fact, if I wasn't such a low-postcount newb I'd be sending CSL a PM offering temporary membership of a 16 player club so that he could gain further experience of Club v Club racing, Follow The Leader and Keep Your Distance, as well as general larking about of a Friday and Saturday evening.

What's CSL's name in game? The diaries make me want to start it up again and go play top Gear crew with him. Nicely written and expresses what I love about the game too.

Edit: Never mind. Just played a while and noticed CSL GT in the member list.

Ha, I went through pretty much the exact same thought process (http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2011/04/05/test-drive-unlimited-2-greed-is-good/) after finally winning a significant amount of money, and also went with focusing on fleshing out my own collection first. I've got what I need in each class of racing for the rest of the championships now though, so hopefully I can start redirecting more into the club soon.

I am still playing this fantastic driving game on the PC, yes. I'm in the middle of the 75 mile Ibiza grand tour for the million buck reward.

Fun fact (bug) - when you pause an SP race, it seems that the clock doesn't stop when you're in online mode. So if you're having a hard time with a rainy surface or night time, just pause and wait a bit - the weather and time of day will change and you can resume. Heh.

Curse you, Ibiza Cup! I was on the 4th or 5th event, which was an A7 time trial. I had my Alfa Romeo, and it just wasn't getting the job done. I backed out of the cup to go to the tuner, and now I've lost all my progress! That means I've got to do that damned elimination again! BAH!

At least this time I'm fully tuned and ready to kick some Wintory/Wilder ass. And "Adam." Whoever that is.

As an aside, I wish they made the photos a little easier to get. Add an option to the start menu that will at least tell me what the requirements are for each one. As it is, they're essentially daring us to find an annotated map/youtube vid.

Apparently the Exploration Pack DLC is out for PC (still waiting on MS approval/PSN re-launch for consoles). Both RPS and Joystiq blurbed about it within the past few days. I thought it was weird that the official site didn't mention it. I guess they were otherwise engaged.

Question if anyone still reads this topic: is there a way to transfer car collections from Ibiza to Oahu? I'd rather not take flight after flight back and forth just so I can have all my sweet rides.

That sounds like exactly the sort of thing Eden Studios would overlook. Along with being unable to sell cars or rendering steering wheels useless because you have to walk your stupid avatar around indoors.

I'm so over this stupid game*. What a colossal disappointment it turned out to be. :(

You can actually access any car you own from any house you have; go to a house and when you're in the garage, look around for an 'i' icon and you can use it to pick from your full list of cars and you'll stay at that house.

(It's admittedly not immediately obvious; I had to fire up TDU2 briefly to remind myself what you had to do to get the list.)

Christ. Why did I buy this again? I returned the 360 version because I got fed up. I guess I just want this to be a good game so badly I'm willing to lie to myself to buy it on Steam when it's cheap.

Anyway, I'm just going to treat this as a casual cruising game on the PC.

But the open world driving, challenges, car collecting, exploring and racing around with people online is really good.

"Excuse me, stranger. My very expensive car is in need of service, and I don't have time to drive it 4.6 miles. Can you take it for me, and try not to damage it? There's 20 grand in it for you if you do, from which I will deduct accordingly for every grass and mud stain you put on the car. Go crazy getting airborne and mowing down stop signs, though. And if you don't succeed, I'll chew you out over the phone while you're alone with my car."

Started playing this a couple weeks ago. I love how goofy some of these mini-missions are. My next favorite is the way my character makes the 'have-a-nice-day' wave to the guy walking away in tears after helping confirm his girlfriend is cheating on him.

Also, I wonder if the drivers setting the time I have to bust my ass to beat on the offroad time challenges are related to the AI opponents of the same name that drive like grannies when I race against them..

Has anyone played this recently on the PC? It appears to be impossible to login, which means impossible to access my account, which means impossible to drive all the cars I previously owned or well, any on that account. There is no "play offline" option for an existing online account. :(

New offline account I made doesn't have access to "DLC" cars - not that I recall them being DLC before... is this a EA-like sunsetting of servers, but this time without actually telling anyone?

Telefrog

I've been playing recently thanks to Euro Truck Sim 2 and you're exactly right. The PC servers seem to have been turned off, so you can't login with an existing profile. You just have to start over with a new offline account.

Interestingly, the game populates the world sporadically with AI controlled cars that act like the multiplayer cars used to on the map. Unlike the normal NPC drivers, these cars have fake names floating over them, (names are from the SP cinematic NPCs) show up on the minimap, and drive like complete idiots. You can challenge them by flashing your lights. It's a nice touch for offline play, but it's too bad that the only way to find out about it is to have the publisher turn the servers off.

To this day, there is no racing game like Test Drive Unlimited. Even TDU 2 was worse than the first TDU. EA seems to be eating its own waste and regurgitating the same Need for Speed game over and over again. Why has no one else come up with an open-road semi-sim racing game?

Wasn't worth it really, unless you were desperately tired of driving the same cars in the first TDU. TDU 2 was as much about driving as it was about pretending to be a European interior decorator douchebag.

Sadly, according to this page (http://www.testdriveunlimited2.com/archive), the TDU 1 servers are officially dead.

Yeah, it is a nice touch and about as much "online" as I really need - it just pisses me off that my cars are now utterly unreachable. The Caterham especially, as it's just so FUN to drive. :( Still, I'll take what I have until someone maybe hacks the whole thing...

Agreed, except I like TDU2 fine as an expanded version of TDU. It's almost the same game with another island, more cars (well unless they're turned off! GRR) and updated graphics. I tune out the "story" since it becomes rather irrelevant after you get your licenses.

Yeah Forza Horizon looked nice until I realized that the Forza series is XBox exclusive.

TDU 2 had certain things that turned me off as (not sure if I'm qualified to call myself this) a car enthusiast. Like the effect for the spinning rims.

I long for a game like that. Or even something more arcadey like Midnight Club but with less congestion.

Marvin: it's all relative. Is it much more realistic handling than TDU? Yes it is. Is it less realistic than the main Forza games? Yes it is, since they took out damage modeling, which puts it somewhere in the same area as Gran Turismo and NFS Shift. But will you have to learn how to take certain critical turns well in order to beat the times set by your friends like in Forza 4? Yes you will.

That's the part I have trouble believing from what I'm seeing in the videos. The TDU cars stick to the actual road, for one.

Nah, those are the "first 30 minutes" which actually looks a lot like the demo to me. The first race is pretty ridiculously fast, almost too fast to me. I'm not sure what it is exactly (camera angle? perspective? road feel? something I can't quite pin down), but the feeling of actual speed in real places is imparted much better in TDU2 to me than this; it just feels arcadey and consequence free to be able to bumper-car my way down the highway at what feels like warp speed.

... now that I think about it, I've always had an issue with Forza's depiction of the world. Maybe it's just that I'm on a monitor rather than a widescreen TV, but I could never judge distances very well in it (opposed to many others). I don't even notice that I don't have a brake line in TDU2, but in Forza games it's a must. Wish I could figure out the kinesthetics of the problem.

Still, it is pretty and it does appear to have open bits. And the narrator person isn't annoying and in your face like the sad attempt at "story" in TDU2 so ... I might bite.

The narrator--actually more of a receptionist--is thoroughly annoying, as are the DJs, and the cut scenes, and essentially everything but the driving and graphics, which are great.
