View Full Version : Solium Infernum PBEM sign-up thread (updated to include PBEM BBQ!)

I hope I'm not stepping on another thread, but I figured we could use someplace to coordinate PBEM games of Solium Infernum. Which I heartily recommend. This is easily one of the year's best multiplayer games.
However, you won't want to jump into a multiplayer game before you've read the rules and maybe shuffled the pieces around in a single player game. And you won't want to commit yourself to an archfiend build until you know a bit about the gameplay. Be particularly careful to understand the importance of your charisma, which determines how many resources you get. Don't be too seduced by perks to the point that you ignore your attributes. Don't be too quick to take a low nobility rank. These are things you may not know at first, and it'll suck if you get locked into a PBEM game before you appreciate this stuff.
So here's the deal: When you're ready for a multiplayer game, post your name here and whether you're willing to host. As names accumulate, I'll arrange folks into groups of six and send you on your merry way. I'd also recommend that you start a thread for your game where you can talk publicly about what's happening in the game. I imagine we've got enough interest for two or three full games, so hopefully that won't be too annoying to non-SI players on the forum. But just as Bruce, Troy, and I had our liveblogging thread (waiting on Bruce's turn!), I'd love to read you guys talking about how your games are progressing.
Finally, if you find yourself falling behind in the game and losing interest, I'd recommend that you stick it out. Worst case scenario, if you feel you're completely out of the running, you can turn your side over to the AI. But there can be dramatic changes of fortune in Solium Infernum. And there are even ingame contingencies for winning by losing. You can also come in second place by hitching your star to another player's wagon.

Solium Infernum is downloading to my hard drive as I type this, at a blazing 30KB/s.
I am interested in playing in a PBEM game, but probably should not host for the benefit of all. As I said in the other thread, I should be in a game with people who are understanding of the following:
Though I enjoy them, I suck at strategy games, and, on top of that, I won't have the time to follow any of Tom's advice above. A single, PBEM game of SI is quite honestly all the gaming time I'm going to have for the foreseeable future.
My job is destroying me right now. I will commit here in public to submitting a turn once every 24 hours no matter the cost to my health or relationships, but that turn might also come very late at night US Mountain Standard Time. That said, I may have to make a 2-3 day business trip at an unspecified date in December during which I wouldn't be able to participate at all, as I lack access to a portable, Windows computer.
If there's no group that wants to put up with all of that, I certainly understand.
Edit: Errr, my name is Scott.

Don't be too quick to take a low nobility rank. These are things you may not know at first, and it'll suck if you get locked into a PBEM game before you appreciate this stuff.
Definitely take heed of this. Your rank is important for a lot of things, including the strength of your starting Legion, which is actually a much bigger deal than you might think. At the lowest Archfiend rank, your starting Legion will not be strong enough to take on any PoPs right out of the gate--not even the relatively weak ones. Which can be okay, if you have a strategy for building up that Legion (perhaps bolstered by whatever you spent those Archfiend points on), but it's probably not the best starting strategy. I'd recommend making your starter archfiend a Marquis.
Also, don't spread your points too thin when you are buying attributes. This is not the sort of game where you will be good at everything, so don't be afraid to specialize. Look at the chart that tells you what benefits, Rituals, etc. that each Attribute gets you, and pick one (or at most, two) to really focus on. For the others, dropping a single point isn't too big a deal (that only costs two Archfiend points), but don't be afraid to leave them at zero, either. You don't need to put points in every Attribute.
I'm up for some PBeM, BTW. I can host or play--whichever.

When you post your name, I'm assuming you're ready to be dumped into a PBEM game.

I'm definitely up for some PBEM with other total noobs -- after a little single player play I love the mechanics so I'm curious to see how they play out in multi for reals...

PM your email address to the game's host. Once he's heard from everyone, he will then set up a game. I'd recommend the default settings (normal map size, normal game length, uncommon places of power) but with the map type of the host's choice. This will then generate a file sent out to players, who will create their archfiends.
Since it's a holiday weekend, folks' schedules might be erratic, so this may not take off immediately. If you have any questions about the process, feel free to post them here. Any additional folks interested in games, feel free to sign your name. And if you guys are interested, feel free to start a thread about your game. I'd love to read how it's going, inasmuch as you can reveal details without compromising your secrets. :)

A turn a day is what I figured, but I imagine there will be some folks (who quite fairly enough) would prefer more turns/day since this is new and exciting. The "official" Qt3 games being 1 turn/day would be perfect.

Oh, and if your game hasn't started yet, you might want to hold off. It seems that Vic is fixing a problem with the starting legion stats not scaling up properly to your nobility rank. That's a pretty huge deal during the opening turns.

EDIT: Actually, I seem to have mischaracterized the problem. The starting legions' stats are more random than they're intended to be, so you might not get all the stats you're supposed to.

Most of these PBEM games starting up now are going to proceed at basically the rate of a turn a day. That's just kind of the pace you get with folks who have different schedules in different time zones. But I think I first heard the term "PBEM BBQ" in relation to Stars!, a venerable sci-fi PBEM game. The idea is that everyone is gathered at the same time to quickly play through several turns, if not a whole game. It's generally something you do while you're also futzing around on the computer between turns, watching TV with half an eye, listening to a podcast while balancing the checkbook, or so forth.
So in that vein, is anyone up for a Solium Infernum PBEM BBQ game this weekend? We don't necessarily need a full roster, but we do need at least three people who can be available at the same time for an hour or two. I'd suggest proposing a time in this thread and seeing if you can get at least two people to join you. For instance, I'll throw out 10pm Pacific time tonight. Anyone interested in an SI BBQ starting at that time, post here and PM me your email address.
And thanks to Jack Black for proposing this!

Is having separate threads so bad? It's a nice way to see just the banter for your game, and since the games don't last long it'll probably quiet down soon enough, much like any popular game here (recently, Dragon Age).
Plus, I'd bet the extra exposure is good for Vic, and perhaps the genre as a whole, which I'd like to see prosper.

Morb, these are mostly PBEM games. You can take your turn whenever you like, so as long as you can find five minutes during the day to sit down with the game, you can join in. Otherwise, we managed to barrel through 25 turns in our weekend BBQ by putting in a couple of hours on two nights, so that's an option for you as well.

Morberis, turns take about 10 minutes if you really really concentrate on them. For me, they take 2 minutes (I think I'll lose a lot, though). You can get the manual from Vic's website at crypticcomet before buying the game. Check it out! I think weekend-only might not be necessary :-)

Not any more than playing with international players in different time zones. Plus, the QT3 games are 1 turn/day anyway.
If you're really concerned, try to get into a game specifically with international players / nite owls. But I wouldn't worry about it that much.

Given how different the schedules of 6 random people on a forum are going to be, 1 turn a day is a good goal. 2 turns a day is impressive, 3+turns in one day is people setting aside specific time blocks to play. During the BBQ I think we averaged about 10 minutes a turn for the first night and maybe 15 minutes or so per turn the 2nd.

I'd like to play a long or (gulp!) epic game on a large map. It's 5 or 10 more conclave counters, which translates to roughly 15 or 30 more turns. For a long game at a turn a day, we should still be done in about two months.
That's the main negative out of the way. However, the positive is that hopefully people get to develop their legions / avatars more thoroughly, and we all have more lebensraum.
I can host if necessary and am usually good for two turns a day, with a caveat that I am most likely to send out turns between:
07:00 - 09:00 EST (12:00 - 14:00 GMT)
and between:
17:30 - 19:00 EST (22:00 - 0:00 GMT)
However, one turn/day is still fine by me.
Anyone interested in a longer game? If so, please also state your preference for long or epic :) I can't decide which map is best for a longer game, but I'm leaning towards Great Rivers.

An IM program plus Dropbox would work well for a BBQ.. rather than uploading the turn files to email 100 times you could just drop your turn file into the folder and have it automatically upload to everyone's computers in seconds.

That said, I'm extremely interested in getting into a game - with the caveat that it's probably going to take 48 hours for me (involving my work-computer, a USB key and a 20 minute walk) to get turns in. I know this makes for an agonizingly slow start, but would anyone be willing to join into this?
Due to my wonky internet access, I'd probably be the most unsuitable host at the moment.
A highly interactive short/small map game would probably be best, but I'm game for anything - as long as you accept a 48h turnaround time for turns.
Looking forward to it!

... I think I first heard the term "PBEM BBQ" in relation to Stars!, a venerable sci-fi PBEM game.
Last weekend's BBQ was a huge success that has a game that is 2/3rds finished and a close race for 5 of the players. With that in mind, I'd like to throw out 11PM Eastern time tonight for anyone else interested in starting a new BBQ this weekend. If you're interested but that time doesn't work for you, throw out a time that does. PM me your email address and post below mentioning this specific BBQ and I'll get the invites going.
Game Name: Hell means never having to say you're sorry (probably abridged as HellStory for the actual game name)
Map: Great Rivers
Length: Normal

Map is large, Lake of Fire, rare places of power. Post here to claim it, then PM me your email address. First turn should be around 11PM tonight (one of the players has a busy day planned)

Tonight at 11PM EST is a go for the Hell means never having to say you're sorry BBQ. Tribute will be demanded. Cantons will be claimed. Places of Power will be um... empowered. Just a bit over 4 hours from now.
There still is 1 slot open for one lucky fiend. Novice, has-been, and prominent archfiends are all welcome.

I could be interested Karacan, but since you have internet issues you'd need to take the initiative and set up the specifics of what times we'd play at.
Deal. :)
Alright, now officially collecting sign-ups for Slow Simmering Soul Shashlick. Ideally someone else hosts, but if not, I'll just corrupt my work-computer with demonic influence.
Settings:
Map: Dante's Peak
Map Size: Small
Length: Short
Turns: 48h, no weekend updates. Turns may go out faster.
Places:
#1 Karacan
#2 Soldats
#3 McKnight
#4 Scuzzmuggler
#5 Ethylene Oxide
#6 JM
Diplomacy will be encouraged, which should make the 48h turns bearable. :)
Post here or PM me if interested, and we'll start as soon as we're full. /Edit: Please state specifically that you'd like to join a 48h/turn game, to avoid confusion with the unhealthy demonic rate of the "normal" sign-ups. :p

Is this the type of "work" your company pays you to do?
I've lost count of the numbers of times I've heard you say, "I can't take my Dom3 turn, 'cause I'm at work," or "I can't view the last Dom3 turn, 'cause I'm at work." waaa...waaa...waaa...
Others are right: Dave needs to be everyone's #1 priority target, regardless of the game being played.
Haha, that tutorial is outstanding. Nice work Dave.

I just read it. Nicely done! However, I fear for your wife if you are married. Perhaps I should show it to my girlfriend to make myself appear more normal, you know, like when one hangs out only with his non-GQ buddies?

My wife actually read through the whole thing and helped me edit it!
I woke up on Saturday to find my Octowaken (Dominions 3) turn was going to host in 10 minutes, so I desperately moved everything I had to one province just like I had the previous turn. I felt badly, and posted about it. Then I did a little work outside, thinking, dang, I really wanted to write a Solium tutorial today. But I don't deserve to.
But then I couldn't help myself. And I took time to make a careful Octowaken turn that day, and another today, so I feel okay about myself now. Can we take the target off of my back?

I'd love to play, since I'm becoming obsessed with this game, and I'd rather take notes and screenshots for an AAR instead of just thinking about it all the damn time. *twitch*
You should consider hosting, Calistas. Hosting can be an AAR in and of itself, with turns getting corrupted, the wrong turns being sent, yadda yadda. It's one of the bigger challenges of multiplayer imo--the ruleset is by comparison very straightforward. Plus the people signed up are all already hosts ;)

6 is the magic number of players. I'll join because I like beating on Soldats ;) And I'm curious to see if my predicting other players' moves and thought processes is anything near accurate. I think every turn I get I place two or three obvious orders and then 10 minutes later rethink them entirely and go with something different.
The nice thing about PBEM is that you generally have a few days to learn the game since the first few turns are generally move your legion to the nearest place of power and either buy a relic or legion outright or demand tribute to get to one. If you can't win against a nearby place of power than it might change to buy a praetor or artifact turn 1 instead.

Actually, Ron, you didn't do anything. It looks like it was a matter of AaronSofaer and Mysterio deciding to just take the last six names on the list to start their own game. I'm not sure if it's a lack of courtesy or bad math skills, but there's no reason to think the most recently posted six names are the only people not in a game. Especially since the original post in this thread lists each game as it's formed.
Anyway, since ron debry has pulled out of the game Aaron and Mysterio set up on their own, we now have enough for Game #15.

I'm very sorry, Tom! It was totally unintentional on my part. I didn't realize that there was a list at this time; for some reason I just assumed that everyone was already in a game.

Aye, I've ended up in a couple of specialty games (short/48h, and a AAR/24h game). I can give up the spot in the official game if someone would like it, or I can go for three, whatever pleases the Infernal Council.
