Given there are threads that date back like 8 years devoted to a single topic, you MIGHT want to consider just collating all your announcements here on out into a single thread. Just sayin', just throwin' it out there.

Dan, this is getting ridiculous. No other developer does this here. All of this almost-daily-update business should be left on your site, and your announcements here should only be maybe one pre-ship and one actual-ship announcement.

Because right now you are losing more customers here than you're gaining by reposting basically the same information five times in a row.

The 3 Moves Ahead guys are big fans of his games, and Dan has Tom's blessing to do this. Perhaps Tom is happy for the extra publicity for DVG.

I'd find it less annoying if he took part in QT3 discussions, though.

Actually, I'm inclined to agree with RepoMan. I'm happy for developers to come here to talk about their work, but Dan's games are awfully niche and don't seem to start much actual talking. So the result is just a guy who doesn't participate in the forum elsewhere cutting and pasting announcements that no one seems to read. I'm not going to ask him to stop, but I do wonder if it's counterproductive.

A couple great points were brought up in recent posts.

First and foremost, thank you Tom for allowing me to post here.

JM - I look through the discussion and post here and there. A while back I was very active on the Sarah Connor thread. I was a huge fan of the show and enjoyed talking about each episode and and where it was heading. Then it got canceled. :(

I am tempted to post more on the P&R threads, but they tend to be very heated with a strong liberal slant that goes against my feelings most of the time. Talk about counter-productive! :)

RepoMan - Yes, as we get close to sending a game to print I do post more often. The goal is to make sure everyone gets informed. Each time we've sent a game to print I get emails from people who pre-ordered who didn't know it was time to send in their names for the boxes, and were left off. This happens even after posts on the DVG site, newsletters from DVG, and posts on different game sites.

Game Talk:
I would love to talk about our games! If anyone has any questions, comments, or opinions, it would be great to discuss them. I would also be happy to talk about game design and publishing. The world of small company tabletop game publishing is much different than the world of big budget computer game publishing, and I think, just as interesting.

A word about pre-orders…

The pre-order system is a vital part of a strategy game company’s business model. Without pre-orders, most companies would be hard-pressed to bring a game to market. For small companies like DVG, it would be worse than hard-pressed, it would be impossible.

We recently ended the pre-order cycle for Frontline and Phantom Leader. We then charged the credit card pre-orders from the past 9 months.

We usually have 10% of the charges declined. We then contact the customers and ask them to re-pre-order with revised credit card information. Roughly, half do, and the other half don’t.

I must admit, I was worried when we charged the cards this time. Let’s face it, the economy has been bad for all of us, plus its holiday time when money is even tighter. I was fully expecting to see one declined charge after another.

I want to thank all of you who pre-ordered, because I got an early Christmas present this year. Against all anticipation, the number of declined cards were down, and the number of people who then re-pre-ordered was up. When the dust cleared, all (ALL!) the Phantom pre-orders were successful, and only three (3!) of the Frontline pre-orders failed.

Thank you all for a very Merry Christmas!

Wow, a new cycle of games is starting!

In this cycle we’re moving forward with Down In Flames – Guns Blazing (WWII), Down In Flames – Locked-On (Jets), and Modern Land Battles (well, er… modern).

Looking forward, we’re going to be announcing 3 new games for pre-order in the coming weeks…

Field Commander Napoleon
The 3rd installment in our Field Commander series, and a huge game. It will have 6 mounted maps and span Napoleon’s entire career.

Here’s the game box, courtesy of Wan…

Hornet Leader – Carrier Air Operations
One of the most demanded games to get into print is the Hornet Leader II series. This game will include the material from Hornet Leader II, Carrier Air Group, Cold War, Marine Air, plus new material.

It will be a huge box with over 300 cards.

Wan has been kind enough to create an ad to get the ball rolling…

Vendetta
Our first venture into the Euro/Mass Market!

A “Family” card game. It's a card game for 2 to 6 players. Each player plays a mob boss trying to take over the top spot in New York City. The game is designed to be a low complexity family game and takes about 45-60 minutes to play. The tone is very light and very socially interactive.

The goal is to take control of different places and people in the "Neighborhood". As you do so, you gain reputation. The first player to reach the reputation goal wins.

Here's the cool part of the game...

The cornerstone to the game is the "Vendetta" mechanic. If I take control of the local Delicatessen, I get some Reputation points. If you then come and Whack (destroy) the Deli, you take the Reputation points I gained from controlling Deli.

But wait!

There's more!

When you Whack my Deli, you must give me some of your Vendetta counters. The specific number is noted on the Deli card. If I attack you in the future, I can spend your Vendetta counters to pump up my attack against your places and people.

So, the more you Whack a player, the more bonuses they have in the future to Whack you back.

This does 2 cool things.

First, you get the whole "Grudge" or "Now it's personal" aspect of mob warfare.

Second, even if a player gets Whacked hard, he still has the resources to make a comeback. Which means until a player wins, everyone has a shot at winning.

The design came together very fast, and the artist, Jerry, is doing a great job of capturing the light feel we're going for.

Here’s the current box cover…

Have you considered small company computer game publishing in addition to small company tabletop publishing?

I hope I don't step on anyone's toes here, but Cheapass Games (with Button Men for the iPhone), Catan on the iPhone and 360, and Solium Infernum (which at its heart is definitely a board game) have all successfully transitioned to electronic gaming, with AI components or through play-by-email.

Vendetta sounds interesting, but I think I played my last board game over a year ago, and that was probably a Ticket to Ride session. It's just too hard to coordinate everyone's schedules, and when we're able we're more likely to play cards. On the other hand, Solium Infernum and Uniwar are two fairly popular multiplayer games on this forum, both with board game roots. I think a "casual" game like Vendetta could also garner decent interest, if the ruleset is good and the fifth iteration is as fun as the first.

Aww, you said that naughty n-word, not nice Tom. ;)

I must admit, first coming to the thread, I was like "HUH? Did the vetting failed? Has an advertisement shill infiltrated us? Did Derek Smart finally experience a meltdown, had an identity crisis and collapsed to assume a new name? (you know, that PHANTOM LEADER thing...)".
But after his clarification I'm like "Okay, the guy maybe 'spams' a bit, but it's just this one thread, and none is held at gun point to read it, and he seems like a nice fellow and an actual indie dev trying to make a living amongst his few customers, so let him have his thing".
Besides, only takes about five minutes around here, what with all of you guys posting in all the topics everywhere, to drive a thread back to the 3rd page before soon, anyway.

DanVerssen

Diddums,

We've had a couple games ported to the PC, like Down In Flames through Battlefront and Hornet Leader through Matrix.

The biggest hurdle for computer games is the upfront money needed. It is hard to find a programmer who is willing to code now for a royalty later.

Computer art is also expensive. Most computer gamers demand 3D art in a 3D engine to make cool looking animations and such. Again, all very pricey.

I would like to port more of our games to the PC. The tricky part is making the numbers work.

Dan,
If I were you, I would stop with the cut/paste and make it personal. Start a general thread (not a news thread) talking about the game to spur conversation. Otherwise everything you post is just like what we see in spam posts. Bland mass market links. You may be short on time, but it would be well worth your effort on a forum like QT3 where there are a lot of people who love board-games. Word of mouth is a powerful sales agent.

As far as P&R, people aren't going to hate you unless you worship Glenn Beck and are a crazy racist you'd be fine.

--------

On to something else. I don't own any of your games, but perusing what you offer I've got to compliment you on the card design (aircraft, tanks etc). They are by far some of the most well-done cards I've ever seen. The layout and art is complement each other brilliantly.

Dan,
If I were you, I would stop with the cut/paste and make it personal.
This.

Despite the recent incident with Brad, Qt3 is mostly a cozy place, you don't need to do public relations in a 'suit' type approach. Just be yourself, a regular person. Talk to your customers direct, you should know their names in person by now.
Less cardboard placard announcements, more...well, words fail me (did I mention it's very late and I'm very tired, and I have about 5 hours to sleep before work?), but you get the gist of it.
I think I'll do a quick overview and turn in to bed at this point.

Standard News...

We just received the Frontline and Phantom Leader sample games from the printer! They look amazing! The colors on the boxes, cards, and counters really come out. Wan did a wonderful job of choosing a diverse, yet consistent palette of colors.

This is our last company update before the holidays. We wish all of you the best. It has been a great year for DVG. Our line of games has grown, sales are up, and we have made some great friends around the world.

There is a great Field Commander Alexander review on BGG…

A More Personal Section for the QT3ers...

I'm hoping that Frontline and Phantom launch two new series of games for us. Frontline focuses on very tactical combat and can handle anything from stone axes to phasers. Phantom focuses on air campaigns and operations. It will work for WWI and forward.

The gravity of the strategy world seems to be WWII, so we're focusing on that era. Science Fiction is tricky to do without a license. Any ideas for other eras of interest?

Our new mega-sized game covers all of US naval aviation throughout the service life of the F/A-18 Hornet strike fighter. The game includes: 330 cards, 2 counter sheets, an 11” x 17” mounted Tactical Display Sheet, and Player Aid Sheets.

Starting with the new games, we will also update the number of pre-orders received and the total number needed to send each game to the printer. We’ll update these numbers each week.

All bullshittery aside, I like the looks of Hornet Leader, and the fact it has lots of aircraft and stuff, AND I don't have to spend two weekends putting the pdf pieces together. The $70 is a shrug for what looks like lots of gaming.

The 36/350 preorders to go to print is a big turnoff. Print it now, I'll buy it.

scharmers,

Thanks for the support!

We would really like to send Hornet to the printer ASAP, but the printer demands payment up-front.

From the time we pay the printer, it is roughly 6 months until we receive payments from our distributors.

This puts us in the same position of most tabletop strategy gaming companies in that pre-orders are vital to the process.

As it is, DVG is well ahead of the other companies in that we can now go to print with 250 pre-orders. If you look at the other company web sites, you'll see they require 500 or 1000 orders before going to print.

Great News!
Frontline and Phantom are ahead of schedule! They should arrive here later this week!

We’ve added the initial rulebooks for…

Down In Flames – Guns Blazing
http://images.dvg.com/www.dvg.com/GBDIFRules_DIF.pdf

Down In Flames – Locked-On
http://images.dvg.com/www.dvg.com/dif-lo-rules.pdf

We’ve found that when creating the rulebook for a follow-on game in a series, it is best to start with the core game’s rulebook. This minimizes the chances of mistakes, and keeps wording consistent. It also presents the information in a familiar format and allows for better comprehension.

Next to the Printer
We are sending one game to the printer in a couple months. The possible choices are: Guns Blazing, Locked-On, Hornet Leader, or Modern Land Battles. Each game needs 250 pre-orders to go to the printer. Whichever game receives 250 pre-orders first gets to go. The others will follow later. Each game’s product page lists the number of pre-orders gathered by the game. If you are interested in any of those games, pre-order now and pass the word to your friends.

Curiosity re-piqued regarding Hornet Leader games - are there plans to release an electronic/VASSAL version of the megapack with the pretty graphics/updates? Or an update to the existing games?

DanVerssen

warrenac,

It is very possible. I would guess that it would be best to start from scratch, since doing a complete graphics/interface revamp would be required.
