View Full Version : Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems

I was just kind of skimming this article about cola consumption (http://health.yahoo.com/news/healthday/toomuchcolacancausemuscleproblems.html), since I'm not really a soda drinker, and then I got to this...

The second pregnant patient, who'd consumed up to seven liters of cola a day for 10 months, had low potassium levels and was suffering from increasing muscular weakness, the researchers noted.

Okay, ignoring for a moment the fact that she's pregnant...SEVEN LITERS OF COLA A DAY?

How is that even possible? Don't your kidneys shut down if you just drink too much plain old water in a day? Seven liters? That's like 300 gallons, isn't it? Okay, it isn't (http://www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Cooking/number-liters.html). But that still strikes me as a crazy amount of soda. It's like drinking twenty beers or something.

What. The. Fuck.

Yeah that's almost 2 gallons a day, and just about 20 cans. That's pretty ridiculous, and as costly as a pack-a-day smoking habit.

I'll knock back a 2 liter in an evening at occasional times that I order a pizza. Something about pizza makes me want to drink ridiculous amounts of soda. I usually drink Sprite and not cola, though.

Could be that cola is better than water because it contains some salt. But according to wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication), you need to drink about 10 litres all at once to die.

I was a total soda freak in college and I think my record was 4 liters. No idea how she managed it.

I feel a bit better about my 3 can a day diet-coke habit.

The title of this thread is very misleading, it almost made me spit out a cool refreshing carbonated caramel and saccirine flavored mouthful of delicious soda.

Almost

Pfft. You're just saying that because she was getting 3000 calories from drinks alone. Racist.

Disturbingly, somebody asked how many gallons seven liters is (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090123072334AA2iunV) on Yahoo answers. The answer is 1.85.

I drink about two litters now..

There's a great bit in Supersize Me where he talks to a guy who drank (I think) 4 liters or so a day. He was a night watchman, so he drank it to stay awake, etc.

He stopped when he literally went blind from it, switched to diet soda i think.

3 cans a day and for every 12 oz can I drink 16 oz of water. Meaning that 84oz of liquid is pouring through my body every day but I checked with my doctor and that shouldn't be a problem [for me].

Sometimes I push 3 because I'm addicted to Diet Coke which goes along great with marathon gaming binges but, I have noticed it's a bit harder to pack on the muscle and I tend to get fatigued easily at the gym so uhh maybe I should cut back some.

Holy shit! Consuming an insanely exessive amount of a single food item causes health issues?

And with their scientific rigor with a sample size of two used to extrapolate health problems for normal consumption, I'm glad Yahoo! Health reporting is around to keep us aware of these Important Health Facts®.

A few months ago I was at about five liters a day. That required too many trips to the store. Now I'm down to 1-3 a day. All diet, of course. Gotta have that benzine.

I'm getting into the habit of having a Diet Pepsi in the afternoon lately to give me a perk up for the rest of the day. I've been off soda for a few years now but suddenly I'm in the mood again. Weird.

When I had a killer workout routine going, I used to drink 180oz of water a day easy. I would drink 2x32oz glasses/bottles of water during each workout (2 a day) then 2x16oz glasses of water at lunch, along with a couple of sodas at other meals. It wasn't that many bathroom breaks though, as I was sweating out tons of fluid in every workout. It was more a race to stay even.

Even 2 liters a day is pretty ridiculous (that's 5 cans, about 600 calories).

Seriously, some of you guys need to start drinking something else. Switch to vitamin water or fruit punch or actual fruit juice or something. I promise you will feel better, both physically and about yourself.

Last I read, vitamin water was one of the worst things you could possibly be drinking.

This quote sums it up : "It has this aura of healthfulness that is not deserved. Adding vitamins and minerals to junk food doesn’t make it healthy."

Normal water does the job admirably. It's about the only thing you can struggle to have too much of*. I drink it by the ton and rarely have fizzy stuff. Fruit juice has its place, but it's still pretty sugary and not great for you if you overdo it. To be honest, I'd rather save the calories to feel less guilty about having something more indulgent much less frequently, like a curry or booze at the weekend, rather than drinking something that is still fairly boring and hellaciously bad for you constantly. But hey, free country and all that.

I consume pretty large amounts of Coke Zero on a daily basis, and I thought I was in the clear teeth-wise since it doesn't have any sugar, but my dentist tells me the carbonation breaks down tooth enamel by itself. This has yet to inspire me to cut back, though.

It is the acid in the soda and the sugar combo that is the worst. The acid can still be bad though.

I have limited myself to 3 sodas (any size) per week. And as much diet soda as I can drink (caffeinated water) But I usually rock 1-2 cans a day of diet soda. I drink a lot of vitamin water/water/sugar free kool-aid/gatorade.

I'm constantly amazed that Americans don't drink more (unsweetened) iced tea. Bottled iced teas are incredibly sweet, to compete with sodas instead of marking out their own product category.

The other thing that I drink a lot is just watered down fruit juices. There's enough flavor in a lot of juices that you can add a lot of water and still have something with a lot of flavor in it.

Before jamming on anymore vitamin water, seriously, google around a little. It's not health food.

I drink about 6-8 cans of CZ a day, during the week, and fewer on the weekends. I hadn't been to my dentist in around 7 years, and when I showed up there a few weeks ago, she gave me a clean bill of health. Sure, I had some gums retreating here or there, but that was due to hard brushing and not soda consumption.

Since this "muscle problems" report came out, I've taken to eating a banana for breakfast each morning. Don't know if it's doing any good, but it certainly isn't doing any harm. I suppose it's helped my bowel movements, but that's the only real change I've seen.

WarrenM

6-8 cans a day? Holy crap.

And maybe you were clear but maybe your family is like mine - healthy teeth are a genetic gift from my parents. Doesn't matter what I eat or drink, my teeth laugh it off. I've never had a cavity and the dentist is still amazed at how great my teeth are (I'm 39 now). That doesn't mean soda won't affect someone else's teeth in a bad way.
