The first QT3 SF4 Tournament.

Please send me a PM to register. Title the PM as SF4 360 or SF4 PS3.
Include in the PM your primary character, gamertag, and timezone. See rules below. Registration closes Saturday at noon EST. First brackets will be posted sometime later that day.

The Tournament Rules!

Classic Double elimination style tournament (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament).
All games will be played with a 99 second time limit and the rounds set to best of five.
A player advances after winning two out of three games
All characters are selectable.
Players must use their primary character that they declared when registering for their first game of the set.
After a game is over, the winner must keep his character while the loser has the option of changing.
Any controller or arcade stick is allowed. Tournament progression:

Once the bracket is posted, find your opponent and work out a time best to play them. Post the results in the forum and send a PM to me. Use the following format.

Neo (Ryu) > Agent Smith (M.Bison)
Neo (Ryu) < Agent Smith (Akuma)
Neo (Sagat) > Agent Smith (Akuma)

Neo > Agent Smith 2-1

Please complete matches in a timely fashion. I will not be putting a general hard stop, but if there is a set of folks holding things up they may get disqualified after being PMd at my discretion. Remember the quicker we finish matches the quicker we can get on to the next bracket.

And we are live

How dare you! ;)

If any of the tournament players have video cameras or digital cameras with movie record options, I highly recommend filming your matches. It's incredibly easy to upload videos to youtube and it's a lot of fun to be able to spectate other tournament matches.

I gotta get to unlocking a lot of characters soon.

I always recommend this character unlock method. (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=943712&topic=48092734) Quick and easy. Just don't make the common mistake of thinking 'Easy' is the easiest setting. There's also 'Very Easy' and 'Easiest.' You want 'Easiest.'

Oh, I found that out quickly. I am pretty proficient at Ryu, but I still need some work.

Gouken looks really complicated to unlock. Akuma seems pretty simple.

Also, some of that info in that guide is wrong, but the strategy seems solid.

http://www.capcom-unity.com/s-kill/blog/2009/02/24/sfiv_the_real_story_on_how_to_unlock_akuma_and_gou ken

That is the real story.

I have found the MyCheats guide to be really useful as well.

Yeah, that GameFAQs post might not have the specifics right but it reliably gets you to point B with less effort than it would take to figure out a plan from the Capcom post. The biggest omission is the 'first hit' requirement, but if you're doing the GFAQs jump kick -> sweep kick method you'll meet the requirement anyway.

I'm in, but will continue to suck hind-tit until I can get a wired connection from my X360 to the router. Damn wireless introduces an offensive amount of latency in a game where timing is so critical.

sadly it's probably not your wireless connection so much as the game's netcode. I'm wired and still have input lag.

Could really use an odd number of more 360 participants, so 1, 3, 5 etc more. Right now we've got an odd number of registrants which I can run, but an even number would be so much nicer.

How quickly do you need rounds resolved? I would like to play but won't be available every day.

Also my internet connection, which is usually good, has been acting up recently. If my connection drops mid-fight i'm just going to forfeit that match, so there's no messing around.

K, we got 17 folks on the 360 participating. Would have rather had an even number and I may cut it off for an even number if I do another one, but where this is the first I wanted to include everyone. As such there is one preliminary fight in each bracket.

You can view the bracket here, as well as all the contestants, starting character, gamertag and timezone.

On the PS3 side the first and final round is

Fenrrris v. Jfetch.

Please refer to the rules in the first post, a quick recap. Best 2 out of 3 games. Each game set to best 3 out of 5 matches and 99 seconds. For the first game you must play your specified character. Loser is allowed to select a new character for the next game in the set, the winner is not.

Remember this is all in fun, and there are no prizes, so let's keep it friendly!

It would probably be a lagfest playing with Europe, anyway. Not that I would not play a lag-friendly character. Either this, or schedule some impossible Euro playing time and win through other players' forfeits, or something, ha.

Anyway it was fun and I thank you for showing me how to do all the moves I didn't know and helping me get the "win 10 games on XBox live" achievement, which should show how awful of a player I am online. I should have stayed Blanka.

Also: Damn lag.

Also: How bad would it have looked if I had given the guy who set this tourney up the two-and-out I was so easily capable of in the very first round?

Also: Spawn camper!

YES!!! If I had a glove I would tap your cheek with it sir! I looked at my current opponent's profile and he had the 100 ranked wins achievement. Something I aspire to achieve some decade in the future.

I actually don't have any ranked wins. I've only played player matches and have won under 50% of them. So you should totally underestimate me

Yeah, and the EX version takes some pretty big damage off people, too. It's a big part of my game to land one of those in the EX variety. Guile can be tough because you're wide open for it if you do a roundhouse and miss because it takes so long for both legs to swing through the animation.

All that said, forge did a really good job of taking me out of my game in our friendly last night. If I fight him along the way, it's going to be tough to get through him. :)

That Cammy is in danger of getting disqualified for lack of availability/communication. I like how you can hear the whiffed super ultra combo inputs coming out as teleports -- man I hate that when playing Bison!

As for the rolls, the CPU destroyed me at first with constant rolling, until I figured out that you can grab Abel out of his roll! I'm not sure whether Abel can escape the throw, but it at least prevents him from rolling in and throwing, which gives you a better handle on the initiative.

Dave Long
04-16-2009, 07:04 AM
Yeah, there are a bunch of those Ultra Combo whiffs where I teleported. I literally went into the match cold without having played since the night before, and I've found that those first five or six matches I play every night are easily my worst. I probably should've practiced a little bit before we played.

I don't want to take anything away from gamadict though. He did really well and deserved the win, absolutely.

I really wish they made teleport two buttons or something for exactly that reason. I so so often accidentally teleport if playing Bison.

Jasper
04-16-2009, 07:13 AM
I never even use the teleport, so would be happy if they just removed one version of it, and left it as punch only.

That's probably a flaw in my style though, as now that I think about it I can see some uses for having a non-charge move that'll take you across the screen, especially against someone who'll try to run you into the corner like Abel.

Dave Long
04-16-2009, 07:18 AM
Yeah, you need the teleport. If you watch the other two matches I posted against DeathMonkey, there's one instance where I use it to avoid a fireball and start attacking by teleporting past the fireball.

It's handy, but you have to be more precise with the Ultra. And when you haven't practiced it's hard to be more precise with the Ultra. That's really all there is to it. :)

Once again... I still have no clue how to play against Abel. The constant stream of Ken, Ryu, Sagat and Akuma players online means I never fight against him.

The ultra screwup is actually very easy to fix. Just finish the ultra motion in Up-Forward instead of Forward. You will never get a teleport out of an ultra again.

The teleport itself is very useful, especially considering that you can keep the down charge while teleporting behind the opponent.

Abel actually has a hard matchup against Bison. Most people who haven't played him much miss the fact that they need to block the Change of Direction followup (the combo-able version that is, which is 99% of what one will see online) and the Wheel Kick high. Especially true for charge characters who crouch a lot. The throwing out of a roll tip was already mentioned.

I'm not too afraid of Fireballs when playing Bison, as the headstomp shuts them down so effectively. The biggest problems I have with Bison are when some faster character gets on top of you in the corner (Cammy comes to mind). Being able to escape that without being charged would be handy -- pity I never think to teleport!

It's handy, but you have to be more precise with the Ultra. And when you haven't practiced it's hard to be more precise with the Ultra. That's really all there is to it. :)
True. I'm terrible at the charge supers, and just can't reliably get them off under pressure. :-/

Either this or Devil Reverse.
When you teleport behind someone the natural reaction of the opponent is to go for a throw as you reappear in throw range. In this case the HS is free damage cause you are unthrowable and the throw attempt will whiff.

Interesting. I thought you needed to teleport while they were recovering from a move or jump, and that if they were ready you would be nailed before you could recover...

Dave Long
04-17-2009, 02:10 PM
I'd be ok with tourneys being ranked only if the ranking is separate from the normal battle points as long as we can set them up ourselves. I would imagine you can start a tournament and invite friends and then it seeds based on BP or something. That would make the most sense.

Maybe I have too much faith in common sense, though. :)

Reldan
04-17-2009, 03:09 PM
I'd give them props for including double blind select, except as it was already in SSF2T:HDR for obvious reason which came out much earlier, it amazes me they didn't think to include it for ranked matches in SF4 out of the gate.

Ahh... the fun of watching the character select timer count down to 1 second EVERY match so each person can avoid getting counter picked. It's like a game within the game!

theborbes
04-17-2009, 03:16 PM
Reldan, they did think of it, they just chose not to use double blind. Sounds useless but I can't remember where exactly I read that but it was around the time the HDremix guy started talking smack.

MattKeil
04-17-2009, 03:18 PM
I don't care about double blind selection itself because counter-picking is generally useless in SF4 unless you're dealing with very disparate skill levels between the two players, but I'm glad they're adding it so I don't have to deal with the people who do think it matters. For some reason when I see that the other player is clearly waiting for me to pick first, it irritates me and makes me try to wait them out.

So after Justin won the national tournament, they had a mini-international championship in which Poongko (Korean national SF4 champion), Iyo (Japanese national SF4 champion) and Daigo (Japanese player famous for his insane Third Strike comeback (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnEWSO6NrQo) against the same Justin Wong at EVO 2004) played against Justin and each other for the "international title."

I have never seen the game played at such a level. The match between Pungko (Ryu) and Iyo (Dhalsim) featured exchanges and combos I could never even have imagined. Pungko pulled off a 16-hit combo with Ryu that was a thing of absolute beauty. Daigo won overall, but all four of them were incredible to watch. Hopefully the matches were recorded and can be put up on YouTube for all to see.

Edit: Poongko vs. Iyo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd-OOrrP7ew) from last night. Highlights include Poongko's beautiful 16-hit combo at 1:12, another beauty at 2:40, Dhalsim's immediate answer to that, and Poongko's incredible comeback at 4:00 featuring two split-second timing Dragon Punches through Dhalsim's Ultra and Super. You can focus the splash, then dash in and punish with a fat combo. Alternatively, the easiest option is neutral jump (jump up) + HK. It will do fine if you have trouble focusing.
Sky fall will work too, but as is always the case with it, the timing and positioning are kinda strict.

Okay, Fuzzyslug (Dictator) and I (Abel) just finished our fights.

Fight 1: Fuzzyslug wins, 3-1
Fight 2: Balut wins, 3-2
Fight 3: Fuzzyslug wins, 3-0

So Fuzzyslug (Dictator) moves on.

Neither of us switched up characters during the fight, and despite the scores in fights 1 and 3, it was surprisingly close the whole way.

Very much so. They were great matches. They were also pretty unique. I don't run up against many Abel characters online.

As Jasper said, it's easy to switch to a grab if I haven't already picked my attack button. Even if I've already committed to the splash, if I see you charging a focus I could just hold the joystick in the direction I was running to land safely behind you.

Abel. I did switch up to Cammy the last fight and had a little success doing cannon spikes, but can't really pull it off too consistently with the 360 pad
It's pretty hard to hit Fuerte's splashes with cannon spikes because of the way the cannon spike moves, but you have a chance of at least escaping the splash. You could try an air throw. I was playing a Chun Li earlier who was pretty consistently grabbing me out of my splash-type attacks.

As Abel it's pretty damn hard to get the Falling Sky to hit Fuerte's splashes. Maybe there's a trick to it but usually it's pretty easy for me to land behind the Falling Sky hit box. I'm not that experienced with Abel but I would think his Marseilles Roll would be very effective at dodging those Fuerte moves.

I had an amazing moment today, was just about beat by a cammy (i was ken, naturally), and then the worst happened: she pulled off an ultra. But, BUT, just before she hit me I managed to accurately hit my own ultra, and murdered her for the final win.

It was a moment a lot like that huge comeback linked above, except I didn't have a horde of gamers joining me

With some exceptions, you can almost always counter someone's ultra with your own ultra.

If you focus attack, don't you risk getting neck grabbed instead?

The option is selected during the Habanero dash, you can't be grabbed while a press has commenced. Now, the throw animation starts like the press animation so you can be fooled, but this is a matter of mind games, which is the main reason you should be playing this game, anyways.
Focus attacks can be dash canceled, so take advantage of this if you see the smash is going to cross you. You should always dash cancel FAs, no matter if they are hitting or not. If you wait to see if it hits, it is already too late to dash.
A lvl 2 FA canceled by a dash + simple HP Tornado Throw is more than 250 dmg, which hurts Fuerte a lot, considering he doesn't have much health to start with. And you can always land an ultra after the FA if you have it charged.

You don't want to only use this, of course, cause you will get predictable and beg to be thrown. Mix it up with other options and capitalize on it when the FA lands. Rolling around can help you avoid getting hit, and is in tune with the seemingly chaotic nature of vs Fuerte fights, but don't over-rely on it, unless it sets the opponent up for some damage. You can throw or hit El Fuerte out of the Habanero Dash (ex version has armor, though), so you can roll in and try to throw. But remember that you can get thrown out of the roll, too. :)

That's great advice, actually, and I envy players of the level able to actually bring that sort of thought process to bear in an actual fight. Any fights I have I'm pretty much purely reacting, with a vague smattering of strategies I half-remember from here. I still get a reasonableish success rate with my Zangief though. The Ultra on wakeup seems to catch a lot of people off guard and has netted me a fair few comebacks.

Got absolutely dominated by some guy as Blanka last night though. He was phenomenal. I got a couple of decent approaches and throws in, but he was bouncing around, crossing me up, doing ex rolls that I'd block but then instantly zipping a low punch back across the screen... It was kind of amazing to be on the end of, really. Real class, obvious even to my scrubby eyes. He had like 9000BP, which is an incredible amount. I hadn't seen anybody with more than 1500 before. He got precisely +1 from the victory over me!

wonderpug
04-20-2009, 08:57 AM
Whatever you do, though, don't try to focus attack absorb if El Fuerte is dashing away from you before doing his attack. The running away one is almost always going to be the grab that hits whether you're blocking high or low.

Good point. Generally if I can see something coming, I'd rather go for a counter that was better than 50/50, but being able to stitch in your ultra can make it worth the risk.

First match was intense; last two matches were just embarrassing. I've played Hark hundreds of times prior to this and he's never played a Guile anything like that Guile. Half of my incompetence in match 2 and 3 came from the sheer unexpectedness of the situation. Well played on the secret weapon. It worked.

In retrospect I'm realizing who I should've chosen instead of Cammy for the final round, but well, we'll have to save that for the next tournament match...

I agree that things like the simplified Shoryuken inputs can increase the occurence of wrong moves, but in my case it was really just a case of my nerves causing me to screw up the inputs.

Jasper
04-21-2009, 02:04 PM
I don't mean so much the chance of unexpected moves, which rarely happens to me (outside of a few corner cases), but rather the difficulty of executing all the strict combos with windows just a few frames wide.

I like lots of things about Street Fighter, but this has never been one of them. I much prefer the more relaxed approach in something like Dark Stalkers.

Thanks for the matches Matt, and I apologize to everyone for the delay in getting these games in. I agree that some sort of reasonable time schedule might sort these issues out. The worst case scenario is that no-shows forfeit, but the benefit is that we might be able to do 3-4 tournaments in the timeframe we're currently struggling to finish one in, so there'd be plenty more opportunities to jump back in.

MattKeil
05-09-2009, 07:46 PM
I think the first solution to try might be that when forge puts up the rules/regulations for the next tourney, he also puts up time windows for each round. Such as:

First Round - Monday 5/11 to Wednesday 5/13
Second Round - Thursday 5/14 to Friday 5/15

And so on. That way you can sort of plan ahead to have those days somewhat available, and if you know you can't make them you can opt out of the tourney and get the next one.

Harkonis

That's what I suggested before the start of the tourney, but I think forge thought that might feel too draconian to some of the people. We ran into this on the other tourney for GT/GWJ. I think you have to have a hard limit w/forfeit otherwise it just goes nowhere. :(

It can be tough for some people to be able to play on a work night, especially when differing time zones get involved. I might almost be easier to run a round robin and let people have a myriad number of people to play against at any given time.

Sadly, no. The new mode is a ton of fun and has breathed a lot of new life into the "play against strangers" side of the game, but there's absolutely nothing added that can help in these kinds of tournaments. Too bad they didn't at least add an option to turn on blind character select in private matches since they already made the function for Championship Mode.

"We wanted to focus on the 1 vs 1 experience" or something. I think they've also said "the game is pushing the limits of the systems so much there's just no room for spectator functions." Bullshit either way; I'm pretty sure just about everyone would be happy to have a little extra lag in order to have an online version of gathering around the TV and passing the controller around. To give a brief synopsis, basically MattKeil threw sonic booms then followed them in with sweeps(I am not good at blocking), I did the typical roll around and throw thing. Really butchered the deciding match when I blocked an ultra then somehow failed to land any counter when we were both near-dead. Additionally, I kept picking Ryu on the rematches because I'm used to having the last guy I picked already highlighted on the character select screen and also because I'm dumb

In the third match I finally remembered you can throw Abel out of his roll, which would have been tremendously helpful in the other two matches. It's really impressive to me that Gamadict can time the rolls to be in the perfect throwing position so many times in a round. No matter what I tried to do, over half the time I ended up landing right where he wanted me. I usually try to use the Sonic Boom to control the opponent's movement (most people behave fairly predictably when confronted with a projectile), but it was almost totally useless in this match.

I'm currently very ill, but once it passes I'll be happy to knock out the final matches.

This thread alone is almost persuading me to grab a current generation console and SF4. At the risk of derailing this thread slightly, can anyone recommend a joypad (not arcade stick) for either console that is similar in feel to the SNES pad? I feel such a thing would be a clincher.

Yeah, on the internet, because that's as close as you're ever going to get to one.

But seriously folks: the FightPad is so awesome. I love mine so much that I'll probably buy a second one if I ever see one. It's great for fighting games at the non-godly level, and it's also great for 2d games on XBLA or in, let's say, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Also, it works as a PC gamepad too, so it's great for whatever you play there. It seriously rules, get one.

Crikey they are expensive, the UK Ebay site lists them for around £40 and up. Fourty quid for a single pad!

I must have one. When I get the console.

I recommend the Sega Saturn style USB pads. You can grab one on ebay for around $20. It will work on PC and PS3.
