View Full Version : Where's our chat?

Picture me banging my fork and knife on the table, chanting, "Chat! Chat! Chat! Chat!"
How hard can it be, Chet? We're talking about one vowel difference here!
Seriously, I know you don't want chat here, and that can't be doing much for your motivation, but the poll shows two thirds are up for it. Can you pretty please get it up soon? You seemed to indicate it would be trivial.

Chet's thought process is trivial.

Chet's out of town this weekend, and I doubt the chat is a barn-burner in his mind anyway.

I don't know what you guys have planned as far as the actual back end of the chat, but it would be a pleasant surprise if it was an IRC channel. There are some good scripts out there that provide a web interface into one, and it has the bonus option that I can use Mirc or BitchX to connect directly and skip the webpage interface entirely.
Of course, a publicly open IRC server needs to be secured pretty well, or it can be a troublemaker in your network... so I dunno what he's going to do. Does take some effort, but if he hasn't run one before then maybe he'll enjoy the learning experience. Bonus is, all the PoE sites could use it.

Chet said: Our chat uses a small public irc server so you can actually reserve a fair number of names (not all are taken) and you can use the little java thing or mirc or whatever. It would take all of 30 seconds to setup.
So it sounds like you can use IRC apps OR a Java app. I'm hoping that he's actually planning to include the Java thing, as it'll get a LOT more use than if it requires people to install an IRC app. I gave up on IRC in general years ago when it became all about porn, warez, etc.

ah... missed his post about it.
The chat is up, I will contact Mark about ops etc.

You can access it through the applet or your favorite irc client by pointing you client to irc.webchat.org and joining the #qt3 channel.

The applet isn't trying to connect to irc.webchat.org, it's trying to reach chat.planetz.net. Are they linked?
Correct, one is the public address for the irc clients, the other just for the apps. They are the same.

I just wanted to make sure because I was the only one in there. But now I realize that was because everyone is joining the channel and then leaving again right away.

Ok, MattG and I are in there now. I am around for another 30-40 minutes today.

It appears that my company's firewall prevents my participation during the day. *sigh*

Ha ha..my company's firewall lets me log into chat
I apologize for the emoticon, but it was a perfect opportunity to use it. :)

Those of you with company firewalls might think about downloading SocksCap and mIRC or a similar program. That's what I did, and I managed to join last night, though I can't go through the web app at work, either.

I circumvent my company firewall by setting up a proxy server on my home machine using a fairly common port they don't block (BTW, this does fall into the more difficult category). I use proxomitron as a popup filter/proxy and only allow requests from my offices gateway ip address. I run AIM, Opera, and mIRC through the proxy and it works well and my company while they could see my traffic definitely would not be looking for it where it is running. :)

I don't know if phpBB allows customization of its interface, but it'd be cool to get a chat link right up on the bulletin board menu. Front page would be cool, too, of course.
Because eventually this topic will die, and newbies will never know.
Thanks for setting this up, Chet. There have been some fun coversations, although I worry that Sparky will have an aneurysm from high-speed punning.
The only "lost QT3 topic" I've seen so far was a report of an unholy triumvirate between the USPS, AOL, and Wal-Mart...

Mark Asher,
Is there any chance of putting a chat link on the front page, or better yet, the Forums menu? I'm getting tired of going to this link every time I want to check out the chat. :-)
Plus it'd probably get more usage that way, no?

I've got it in my IRC, and go there from there. Hadn't even thought about what a pain that would be, otherwise. Youch.
You could always bookmark it.

Thanks, Murph. Can't believe I didn't think about doing that!
Still, though, chat will remain a secret shared by the "First 247" QT3 users unless it makes it onto the menus. Then again, that may not be bad. Our own little l33t club.

Possibly. First I have to rouse myself from complete inertness to a state of total apathy. Once apathy is achieved, perhaps a chat link may appear. I don't want to make any promises, though.

Man, oh man, just wait till I get back in town. I'll whip this place into shape again. Although this whole 'link' business might be a little daunting, so maybe we better think it over for a while first.

Hey, if linking is a little too ambitious, at least put the link in a sticky thread at the top of the message board. :D
But seriously, just link it so we don't forget about it...

Chat's kind of empty now, alas.
Tom, now that you're back, any chance you can:
1) Poke Mark with a stick to make sure he's okay, and
2) Put a chat link up on the BB page so people will know it's there and be reminded of it?

Call this a dumb question from someone who hasn't got much of clue about IRC but...
When I try to change my default IRC name (Porcius) to the nickname I use here (TSG) I'm told that that name is already in use. Anyone know why?
Matthew Gallant
09-08-2002, 12:58 PM
It means someone else has registered the nickname with NickServ, which is a service provided by most IRC servers. Type
/msg NickServ HELP
for info.

Thanks, Matt. That clears it up. I guess I'll just use TSG1.
