I wonder if these are copy cat crimes, actually. I'd guess there is at least some influence to that effect.

It's not clear what is behind this particular incident, but this move on the part of some media to suggest that some of these are the result of the economic situation really bugs me. The case in California has been framed that way, but if you read the details those folks lost their jobs because they were fired for cause, not because they were innocent victims of a layoff. If your financial situation is a total disaster because you've been living beyond your means, you would have eventually faced a crisis regardless of the general economy.
