This year is shaping up to a good year for the kind of games I want to play. I actually have a list! Last year it was Fallout 3, Armegeddon Empires and...netflix! Most of the games i want this year are NOT AAA titles, but Ill take what I can get :) This year I actually have a list of games I want again! Yay!

2009's Most Wanted List
Empire Total War- Total war series come on of course I’m getting it! :)
Officers- Take command of the entire conflict 10 miles of battle field, command the front during WW2, including manning supply lines. I understand it has has some semi RPG elements to the Strategy title, basically two great tastes that always go well together!
Stormrise - Creative Assembly's post apocalyptic Total War like RTS
Drakensang: The Dark Eye - A party based rpg and a follow up to the classic Realms of Arkania series? Im soooo getting that
Dragon Age- Next great Bioware title- pre ordered already!
Sins of a Solar Empire Expansion- loved the first one so of course im getting it
Not the time for dragons- will we see this one? Who knows but if it makes it out looks like a great party based rpg!!
Champions Online- I LOVED champions when i was in high school, so if it does the system justice this one will be great
DC Universe Online- argg also made by NCSoft and I love the DC universe...ill probably buy both but between this, City of Heroes, and Champions online...only one will survive! There can only be one!
Marvel Ultimate Alliance II: Fusion- Come on more Marvel Ultimate I’m so in!
Bloodbowl- Oh man I loved the 1990 computer game adaptation of this great board game... and the release later this year has me waiting with bated breath!!!
Field Ops- Great RTS and FPS with RPG elements...when and if it comes out I’m so getting it!
Star Trek Supremacy- follow up to birth of a federation from microprose yes I’m a geek and im here! The alpha is available for download now, but I’m waiting for late beta.
Solium Infernum- Makers of Armegeddon Empires is making a new strategy card game about a war to see who runs hell? Where do I sign up?

Honorable mentions - ones im fairly interested in, I'm watching and waiting for the demo or reviews to see how they shake out
Aliens: Colonial Marines- sure its a FPS but you control a squad of marines too, so im watching this one
Theature of War 2- the first was ok so will watch this one
Galtrix- looks like Warp War board game made into a PC title. I loved this game simple but lots of options and control.
Operation Flash point 2 -i liked the first but still, i can only eek up a maybe
Majesty 2- not made by the same development team so well see
Black Sky- Star Control 2 themed game? Will it hold up as a indie title...graphics look decent so I’m watching
Battleforge- Good year for strategy titles, so well see if this one makes the cut
Grand Ages Rome- yes another city builder, last few i played were mildly disappointing so we'll see
Age of Pirates 2- I love pirate rpgs! Even if the last few releases in this series haven’t been that great
Alien Swarm Infested- Unreal engine squad based combat and I’m watching :)

I’m kind of interested in coming back at the end of the year and see how many of these live up to their potential, how many drop dead or a no show, and how many get pushed out! :)

From looking at the website, am I wrong in thinking that this is a copyright infringing fandoggle, with no hope of being finished before it is crushed by the Paramount legal department?

It has little to do with the old Realms of Arkania Series except that it plays in the same world.
Its like saying you buy Storm of Zehir because of Baldur's Gate 2.

Cool, I haven't heard of StormRise either. Banner year for Creative Assembly Post Apocalyptic RTS!

Are you sure? I've seen it listed as both but I've seen it listed at gamespot and a few other places as Stormwise. You may be right though

I don't mind these threads, but I like them with a bit more commentary than "Duh! I'm sooo getting that! /giggle. Anyone can look up a list, at least try to articulate why you're looking forward to these games.

Nards. I've been looking forward some time to a good post-apocalyptic strategy game. But I was thinking more Road Warrior and less .. tentacle-head monster.

Maybe, maybe not.

I do think Birth of the Federation is one of the most underrated games of the 90s. It remains the best official Star Trek game yet released, imo. In many ways, I preferred it to MOO2.

(Best unofficial Star Trek Game ever?? VGA Planets 3.5 for the win.)

Some bugs and memory leak aside, BotF was also unstable over the Internet during multiplayer (so were most games at the time). As a 5 person LAN party game though, it totally rocked. We lost several weekends playing this one back in the day. Time well wasted.

The lawyer in me nods grimly; but the fan in me says "hell yes" and will be sure to keep an eye on this one.

Not sure WHY I know the name of Mike Strobel - but I certain that I doand I simply can't place it. Anyone know why his name might be familiar?

Thanks for this, new to me. Any info on where it will be available for purchase? My web searching is weak on this one.

It's going to be the most cannon ST evar!? Maybe the Enterprise will be a pirate ship or something. That's more cannon than any ST I've ever seen.

Why isn't Risen on the list? That's my most anticipated game, assuming it comes out this year. All those superhero games are high on my list too.

I never understand that "underground love" Birth of the Federation got and gets.
The only thing going for it is the license and even that is very questionable for a 4x game....

Granted the game is full of good ideas, but they all were implemented poorly or broken.
Pacing and balance are completely off.

What annoyed me most was the planet management.
Individually building factories and stuff was bad enough, but the terrrible design was multiplied by the upgrading and research.
Soon enough you would research lv 2 factories... so an upgrade was in order.
Generally you would research the next level of a building type before you completed the upgrade to the lest one though.
Often independent systems were much more productive than my own because they had high level buildings, while my own colonies where still several levels behind, busy upgrading...

The national morale system was very shallow and pointless, diplomcay was one dimensional and all the other great powers acted on Civ 1 AI levels (being neighbours=war). The combat system was neat on paper, in practise the different tactics had little effect and cloaking was overpowered and easily exploitable.

The license was and remains extremely important to my enjoyment of the game. I connected with the races, and with my enemies. They mattered to me; it made the game matter to me.

It's the lack of races I connect with emotionally that makes MOO and Galactic Civilizations and their sequels such a bore. It's engaging only at an intellectual level - not a visceral one.

Star Trek? That's what I WANT. I don't want to be a nameless, faceless, invented-as-the-designer-scratched-his-ass MOO Espionage bonus race.

I want to play THE ROMULAN STAR EMPIRE. With Warbirds and cool Romulan logos flying over my defeated enemies!

VGA Planets 3.5 offered all of that too - with ST:TNG. ST:OS, Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica races thrown in to boot. That's one of the reasons these game are so engaging.

Now, putting aside for a moment your valid points on AI and planet managment, did you ever TRY a five player game of BotF?

Essentially ALL of the complaints you mention vanish in a puff of smoke. It's all even - and mostly all fair too.

And an entirely engaging turn based multiplayer strategy game. Played over a LAN - in a circle, at one table, it totally firkkin rocked.

Win with the Rommies in a five player LAN game? Good luck. You will certainly earn your bragging rights with that feat - cause cloak or no cloak - that ain't easy to do when the Feds superior tech kicks your ass and the Klingons are conquering your planets with ground forces no matter what you seem to be doing.

Win with the Ferringi? Even sweeter still.

Just a damned fun and and engaging game. I wish there was a 4X sequel for that game that supported 1920x1200 res.

Yes, in early summer! There's also a sequel to Dynasty Warriors Gundam in March, though I'll have to check out the demo first. And Warriors Orochi 2 should be coming to the PC and perhaps PSP.
