384 pictures (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=cardboard+box+cat&m=tags) of exactly that. Seriously, what is it with cats and boxes?

I knew I would love whatever was in this thread before I even clicked on it. Which might be what's going on in a cat's head before he jumps into a box: "I knew I would love sitting here before I even got in!"

Oh, hay, THIS ONE IS NOT DOIN IT RITE (http://www.flickr.com/photos/poppysoir/3084044398/)!

My brother's cat does that too - the box is barely bigger than it's body. I guess I should have taken a picture and submitted it.

Scrax, that's funny but I was kinda enjoying the innocent nature of this thread. C'est la vie.

I'm surprised cats like cardboard boxes. They're not especially soft, they make a fair amount of noise, but then again a cardboard box is really warm, as Kenny's family knows.

I have a very fat cat who is shockingly capable of pushing his entire body into boxes considerably smaller then him. Then he hunkers down in them, with only his head and tail poking out, and waits.

I donno what he's waiting for.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't deathly allergic to cats. At least I'm okay with most dogs.

Our youngest cat loves the paper bags from Whole Foods. I put one on the floor and she immediately hustles inside and turns it into a fort. Cats are funny and weird.

Your death, bahimiron, is what he's waiting for. He may even chuckle quietly if he's fortunate enough to be in the same room that you die in.

I think it's their hunter instinct - the box gives them a place to hide until they're ready to pounce on their prey.

You should see how crazy they get if you put a deer stand nearby.

Tactical options.

This. A box means they only have to keep an eye on one direction for danger. Similarly, if there are no boxes available my cat will always lie down under something if he has a choice, I assume it is to prevent an attack from above. Most of the time he will jump up onto a chair that has been pushed in, so that he is elevated, directly under a table, and the tablecloth hides him in all horizontal directions.

I would just like to say that I'm glad those cat photos do not have LOLcat captions, because I'm sitting here in a cardboard box waiting for those to go away.

When I was in college my roommate had a cat that would squeeze his entire body into a 12-pack cola box. Not a small cat, really, but I guess he was 75% fluff.

Yeah I never quite figured out the attraction of cats to any closed, small space; this includes boxes, sinks, backpacks, the space between the cushion and the couch, the space between the couch and the wall, under the couch, inside of other furniture, in drawers, on the shelves in the closet, in the wheel well of the car, in the engine of the car, inside the arms or legs of clothes, in kitchen containers, in plastic bags.

This list is by no means complete. Cats are crazy.

Our little pound cat freja loves plastic bags and will always climb into them. Unfortunately this ends in tears as she invariably gets the packet handle stuck around her neck, panics and hares around the room pissing herself.

She is the sweetest little animal but not too bright...

We brought a leather magazine bag down to put the extra consoles in when they're not in use (apparently my wife doesn't understand that if I don't have my PS3, 360, Gamecube, Super NES, and Nintendo 64 all hooked up at once, I die). Most nights now it holds two gaming systems and one cat wedged in between them, purring away like a lawn mower.

One of them will also wedge his head into any book I'm reading, in between the front cover and the open pages. This part I don't really get so far. Does he think he's hiding?

I need to start taking some cat pictures myself.

My cat adopted a box and constantly perches on it (as someone mentioned, for tactical options). I moved it to the window in our PC room and it is a happy kitty.

He's marking it. Cats have sweat glands on their face, which is why they rub it on things. He thinks it must be valuable since you are paying attention to it, so he marks it as his.

Plus, their face gets itchy.

Yeah, my cat is all about the "helping" business.

Also, while we're discussing things cats do: MY CAT MASTURBATES! All the fucking time. I tell him he's making God cry, but it doesn't stop him. Then I wonder, if God kills a kitten every time a human masturbates, is God killing a little baby everytime my cat masturbates? The mind boggles.

I usually tell my guy - Hey put that away, I don't want to see it.
I don't feel any guilt about the neutering though. It must be an Orange tiger thing (it's the guy in the picture right?)
I always thought it was to torture the human males. 'Hey look what I can do with my tongue!'

I used to have one who liked to be stuffed into a plastic shopping bag, which is then picked up and spun around. She had issues.

That's not what she means by "masturbating." She's convinced that when a cat kneads a soft surface with its front claws, it's masturbating.

No, it's more than that! He humps with his back legs. I know the difference between kneading and humpin!

The occasional neutered tom will masturbate using some variation of kneading. ... Blocking this behavior might even have negative effects on
the cat's behavior - after all that would be preventing the cat from experiencing intense pleasure from being affectionate toward you.

My cat does something similar with newspapers. She'll stick her head in, wait a few seconds, and then decide to crawl under and fall asleep. If the newspaper is folder up a she'll play with it until its 'unfolded' and then sleep in it.

This thread has made me realize we have a unique opportunity to monetize this economic down turn with two new websites. Let me present,

The LOLHOMELESS!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/hawksdr/Homeless_John-1.jpg

Or perhaps "The Homless in a Box Project"

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/hawksdr/homeless_in_a_box.jpg

With these cute and adorable subjects we could attract perhaps tens of thousands of visitors (maybe millions) each month looking to brighten their day or perhaps find a missing loved one. Then we'll end it with a lucrative book and film project.

So, who's with me?

While I agree LOLBUMs is punchier, we don't want to be condescending or demeaning to their people. And as catchy as "Bums in a Box" sounds, it also could be mistook for a Soylent Green spin off. I guess, Bums in Boxes is a more accurate name.

The merchandising basically sells itself though, LOLBUMs sleeping bags, cardboard boxes, discount clothing, etc.

I was in the kitchen cooking dinner the other night and my cat Henry was hunkered down in a paper bag, hanging out. All of a sudden, I started to hear H-URK, H-URK, H-URK so I look over and sure enough, he barfed on the inside edge of the bag. Then it started to trickle inward, toward his feet, and he started backing up nervously. After a few seconds, it got to be too much and he leapt backward, upending the bag.

I love my cat, but god he's dumb.
