View Full Version : Nutella needs to be a controlled substance

I buy some, I try it, I eat some more and then some more and then some more. Then my stomach starts hurting and I put it aside but only for a while. I'll eat it until it's done.
Reminds me of those anti-cocaine commercials about the monkey that would pick coke over food, water, even its children.

I feel the same way about these (http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1647,131179-248198,00.html), which is why I never make them. (been that way ever since I was a kid)
Is that the same stuff that goes into Ferrero Rocher chocolates?

Mmmmmm Nutellla.
I reached my ultimate Nutella low about six years ago when I discovered that it tastes REALLY REALLY GOOD sandwiched between two soft baked chocolate chip cookies. My friend and I went through half a jar in a night making those.

I have never had (to my knowledge) Nutella. So you're saying it's good?
I vaguely think it's some sort of chocolate spread. Why then is it not called Choctella?

It's a hazelnut chocolate spread.
I binged on Nutella a lot in college. My health thanks me for having not eaten it in several years, although my mind does not.

It's a chocolate/hazelnut spread. The name is based on the word "nut".
Ok some Wiki research shows that this is what they use inside of Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
I'm finding some of this stuff ASAP

To be completely accurate, I suppose they might call it Choconutella.
I loved the stuff. I would sometimes just scoop it out of the jar with a spoon and eat it straight up. But it doesn't go well with a pre-diabetic diet, so it's off-limits now.

Yeah it's the stuff they put in Ferrero Rocher.
It's absolutely terrible for you. Short of lard, I don't think there's a more calorie-dense foodstuff out there. Unlike lard, you can easily consume a couple of pounds per day - and enjoy it (though perhaps not the stomach aches). It really doesn't help that I can chow down hazelnuts like a fat kid goes through cookies and I used to be a huge chocolate milk/cocoa buff.

Speaking of eating stuff that comes in vats, I used to eat muffin batter right out of the tub when I worked at McDonald's. One scoop into the pan, one scoop into my mouth. I also drank shake/Flury mix in its liquid stage. Made a great coffee cream replacement.

I dunno. Looking at the Nutritional Information (http://www.nutellausa.com/nutInfo.htm) it doesn't look that bad. It's high calorie, but it's not particularly high fat for the number of calories, and the saturated fat levels aren't all that high.
Compare that to say for example a serving of Ben & Jerry's (http://www.benjerry.com/our_products/flavorWorld.cfm) Chunky Monkey. One Nutella serving gives 200 calories and 10% of your daily saturated fat. One serving of the Ben & Jerry's gives you 290 calories and 50% of your daily saturated fat.
If you ate nothing but Nutella, you wouldn't be exceeding your daily saturated fat levels. 2000 calories of Nutella would give you exactly 100% of the recommended saturated fat for a 2000 calorie diet. I'm sure there would be other problems to a Nutella pure diet, but saturated fat wouldn't be one of them.

Have you seen how small a single serving of nutella is? :)
Machfive
12-06-2008, 08:37 PM
Two cinnamon graham crackers. Chunky peanut butter on one cracker. Nutella on the other. Form into a sandwich.
Break off a piece. Dip into milk. Eat.
Notice how 2 weeks later, you're out of nutella, peanut butter, and you seem to be 10 pounds heavier.

When I lived in Italy they would serve hot flaky croissant like things for breakfast and Nutella to spread in them. Jesus that shit was good. There was also a version of a white chocolate spread but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it.

Nutella is a kind of nougat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nougat) which refers to all kinds of chocolate mixed with nuts. The stuff in Ferrero Rocher is not exactly Nutella but also a kind of nougat. I'm sad so many people here don't know nougat because it's the best food ever.

We have freshly baked buns and nutella every saturday here (also lemon curd). Only saturday, though, and a jar lasts for several months.

They're all $2 here, and 70% cocoa is about as low as it goes. Of course, it'll make anything from Hershey's taste fake after you take a bite. Even if you eat less of it, it's still worth it.

Dove chocolate bars are far better than Hershey's, though you get about 40% less chocolate for your $0.80.
On the upside, the chocolate you DO get doesn't taste like fucking wax.
One step up from that is Lindt, which might cost $1.50 to $2.00 per bar, but is really fucking tasty.

Am I pointing out the obvious or something? Cat Master seemed to genuinely think decent chocolate was too expensive.
My memory was a bit fuzzy on the pricing and sizing. It looks like Dove is only 15% smaller for the same price as the Hershey's, and while Lindt is over the $3.00 mark, it's 3 times as much chocolate as the Dove.
Hershey's Bar 43g ($0.80) (1 star, barely edible. Good for when the only other pseudo-chocolate is a bar of carob.)
Dove Bar 36.9g ($0.80) (3 stars. Good, but not phenomenal.)
Lindt Bar 100g ($3.50) (4 stars. Total noms, but 60% more expensive by volume compared to the dove.)

OK, so not ALL American's like Hersheys, but as a Brit living in Philly I seem to have to explain frequently why I don't want to share a candy bar; or put it on ice cream; etc. A colleague went to London recently and asked me why the Kit-Kat tastes better - BECAUSE IT'S NOT COVERED IN BROWN EAR-WAX!
