View Full Version : What if McCain wins?
God forbid, let's say McCain pulls out an extremely narrow EC victory like some wackos are saying will happen. How bad would it get? Would it just be a meltdown or would the hysteria die off after awhile and everyone would just accept it as the way it is? I think it would absolutely crush the Gen Y crowd and their nihilism would grow to a point where they didn't participate in politics at all. People my age, Gen X, of course figure that the whole thing is rigged anyway so it would probably just be the exclamation point on that argument. I don't want to even think about how disenfranchised minorities would be. And I think it is pretty safe to say that the rest of the world would not be happy. But my parents sure would be!
As much as I try to drink the Kool-aid that this thing is over and it is a blowout I just cannot stop thinking that something fucked up is going to happen on Tuesday and McCain will win. I can't shake it.

It's an election. I survived Nixon, Reagan, and the Bush leagues. If McCain were to win, well, I've seen worse. The country will go on, one way or another.

I, for one, will be out in the streets fighting the powers that be.
Or at least watching it on TV (contrary to popular notion, it will likely be televised), as that is probably easier.

I think it depends on the circumstances. If Obama in his next stump speech talks about how he plans to burn down the Whitehouse or something like that, and subsequent polls show a huge, last-minute shift to McCain, then I guess people will be disappointed but accept it.
If the polls stay about where they are, and turnout among minorities and younger voters is through the roof, and exit polls favor Obama, but McCain still somehow wins, then things could get very ugly.

I think the country could survive a McCain presidency, but the thought of Palin assuming the office is an extremely serious concern. That sentiment is bound to be read by some as nothing more than leftist alarmism, but thinking about the prospect literally turns my stomach. My opposition to McCain aside, I believe the union would survive his presidency (though his hawkish attitude towards Iran is a major concern). Palin, on the other hand, strikes me as someone with the potential to be even more damaging than George W. Bush.
Edit: oh, yeah, if there's significant evidence that McCain stole the election, it will be riot in the streets time. I don't think that's going to happen, though.

He would still be better than the status quo.
But, it would mark the US as an Empire in steep decline.

hmm, maybe by himself, but the damage him and palin could do together would rival bush i think.

Here's how I see it:
P(McCain steals election) = 0.008
P(McCain steals election | McCain wins election) = 0.3

I mean that it doesn't seem very likely that McCain will win the election by fraud. However, if he does in fact win the election, I will suspect fraud.

I'm not so worried about McCain winning. Still better than Bush (though not by much).
I'm more worried about Palin becoming President.

I don't think this country has the guts to pull a major/significant revolution anymore. It's a damned shame, really.
"Welcome to you are doom!"?
I was totally going to threaten to move to Canada if McCain wins. But with the housing market in the dumps and the economy in the toilet, I guess I'll just have to stay here and sulk for four years.

Will there be any scary places in Republican strongholds on election night?
To be fair, I suppose if one tribe is full of inevitable assassins, it's okay if the other tribe is full of inevitable rioters. It still sucks that they are members of the same group that tells me I'm one breath away from gunning an old lady down in the street because she cut me off in traffic, but that's another story.
I think it's you guys that scare me with your alarmism. :) I've yet to meet anyone in real life as ridiculous as some of these "what if?" threads, though I guess it is just the Internet and I'm probably guilty myself for blowing them out of proportion!

You could always come up here and join us Canucks if Palin becomes the president. That'd be great. I could buy everyone's house and sell it back to them for a lot more money when her term ends up being a big yawner and they all move back to take part in the historic Nancy Pelosi run in 2012. Profit!!

Sorry to keep posting, but it's a fun thread.
I think you guys are giving the media an excuse to constantly update the non-story all evening. And I really hope I'm right -- for safety's sake, not forum cred!
On the other hand, it might be great to add to the drinking game for the night!

I think if he becomes president, he will have a long 4 years ahead of him. He has burned so many bridges at this point every attempt at policy will be opposed by the democratic majority in the house and senate. I don't see people all that willing to forgive him. This is likely to push him further to the right, so he could get the right wing talk machine to claim that he would be fixing all of the country's problems if he wasn't being stymied by the democrats. This will only serve to polarize this country further. It will be a mess.
FWIW: Obama has rarely said anything bad about republicans as a whole, and specifically only about the current administration, and so there isn't so much bad blood from people who have been personally wounded by his words. So I don't believe the inverse of the above is true.

In fact, the dreamy Rachel Maddow asked him about this the other night - in other words, why haven't you attacked the Republican philosophy of governing and pointed out that they've been wrong about just about everything? And Obama told her that he was interested in bringing over traditionally Republican voters who are unhappy with the way Bush has done things and scared McCain will be more of the same. Attacking their entire political philosophy wouldn't have accomplished that.
I think his approach will prove to be correct. Well, it already HAS been, judging by the numbers of high-profile Republican endorsements. I hope that will translate to votes.

Um... possibly, I suppose.
I think we (the USA) still have a good riot or two in us in major metro areas, but a country-wide revolution? Nah. We're already in the midst of a couple of failed wars, an economic disaster and a general hatred of all things government, yet all we do is get angry at the TV.

Well that's kind of vague. Are we talking, perhaps... over nine thousand? No, 4 value packs of .22 caliber from Wal-Mart, retail value about $32. :)
I hope I never reach 80+ firearms just because I want to use each of them enough to make them worth owning! I can certainly think of a number of guns to own far greater than a typical pantywaist would prefer me to have, but I know people who have a lot and just don't shoot them. Might as well spread the joy around at that point. Collecting things is addicting I guess.
Haha, "spread the joy around" triggered a Google add for the "spread the wealth around?" McCain ad. Those Google ads are pretty funny at times.
