I don't think it's being disputed that the Democrats were a large part of the problem. I do think it's fair to say that if the president for the last eight years wasn't so wrapped up in starting wars to defend his father's honor, he might have had the time and/or motivation to actually do something about it before now. Maybe back when the Republicans had full control of the Congress and could have pushed through whatever reforms they needed to.

Actually MattKeil, the responsibility for the current economic crisis lies with Democrats in congress during the Clinton years.

I know this because Bill Clinton said so on Good Morning America.

Did you read the NEW YORK TIMES article in 2003 that the Bush Administration was trying to reform? I guess he wasn't THAT distracted.

I pointed out in that other thread exactly what happened to that bit of legislation. It's failure had zero to do with the Democrats, and everything to do with Republicans letting it to die a quiet death in a Republican-controlled committee.

But you do realize that even with a number majority that it can be impossible to push through legislation? You know how government works right?

Why don't you explain it to us? Because as far as I know, if a party controls a simple majority of the House and the Senate, as well as the White House, then the only thing the minority party can do to hold up legislation that the majority party wants to pass is filibuster. So when did the Democrats filibuster that bill, exactly? Oh, that's right: never. Because it was killed by the Republicans before it ever reached the floor.

Maybe you need to watch School House Rock again.

I meant what I wrote in the sense of govt. policies that tend to raise incomes more equitably etc., like over the course of Clinton's two terms. And that with a Republican Congress for 6 of the years he was in office. Even with (as the GOP never tired of reminding us) "the Largest Tax Increase in American History" implemented to help balance the budget--which actually happened, BTW.

Meanwhile look at the wonderful situation we have under George Jr., with a majority Republican Congress rubber-stamping nearly all of his crap for the first 6 years of his tenure. Pathetic. This clown and his whole crowd will go down in history as the worst administration since Reconstruction.

Yeah, bad bad NBC had the nerve to disparage Democrats and now they're gonna eat shit for it. Don't ever say bad things about Democrats NBC! You should know better, I mean you run MSNBC and all.

Here's the scoop

A “Saturday Night Live” skit that skewered President Bush, Democrats, homebuyers and subprime lenders for their roles in the mortgage meltdown was removed from the program’s website because it “didn’t meet our standards,” a spokesman for the show said Tuesday. An edited version of the skit will be re-posted online soon, the spokesman said.

The skit, a parody of a C-SPAN news conference, ridiculed subprime borrowers, housing speculators and Herbert and Marion Sandler, the real-life couple who built Golden West Financial into a subprime lending powerhouse and sold it to Wachovia before the subprime collapse. At one point in the skit, the Herb Sandler character says he made $24 billion off the subprime boom. Graphics then appear labeling the Sandlers as “People who should be shot.”

“Upon review, we caught certain elements in the sketch that didn’t meet our standards,” a spokesman for the program said in an E-mail message Tuesday. “We took it down and made some minor changes and it will be back online soon.”

Apparently the "standards" means not skewering Democrats. Stupid SNL!

Here it's on the ballot as Prop 2 and I have little doubt that it will pass..

When we had a cigarette tax running on the ballot they had a cop come on to explain that GANGS would be running truckloads of cigarettes over the border so that they could fund their CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES and BUY GUNS with the money they'd make.

Obama says ACORN, yea that same ACORN under investigation for voter fraud in 10+ states and significantly responsible for the sub-prime mortgage crisis, will help shape his agenda.

Woo! Can't wait!

Holy crap you're not kidding? OK here's a big fat one.

Supposedly the current financial crisis was caused by ACORN.

In a phenomenal act of irony wealthy Republicans and bankers pushed the agenda of ACRON as a way to make gobs of sick money fast by repealing the last part of Glass-Steagall Act to prevent us from another Depression type Bank and stock collapse. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act was pushed hard for by Bank Lobbyists, Real Estate moguls, and Republicans. It was signed into law because Republicans threatened to override Clinton's veto. Instead of putting up a stink to a lost cause (or who knows maybe he secretly liked it since they were into some real estate before too) it was signed into law.

OK Bob, that's the first big-ass totally wrong assessment from that video. Do I need to give you more, or do you even listen to people who slip into your alternate universe?

Man I sound like a jerk, but sheesh. This is ridiculous. Onward...

Because I couldn't get a loan when ACORN supposedly got their way. You know why I couldn't get a loan at the time? Because apparently when you use legitimate mortgage brokers and bankers they don't give you loans they're afraid you can't handle. But if you look hard enough (say - oh I don't know, the clown dancers ad on CNN ad-space?) You can find greedy brokers who will give anyone a loan and then immediately sell it as a bundled AAA security. Hey Bob, think there's a bit of dishonesty in that? Because if you do, then you just alienated your support base. It's called GREED and that's what caused the meltdown of the financial and real estate markets. I finally got my home loan the old-fashioned way. Saving money and getting an excellent credit score.

If that's not enough let me give you another example... but by now you've probably tuned out, plugged your ears and are singing, "LALALALALALLALALA I DON'T HEAR YOU!" because I might have a shred of truth and it's a hell of a lot easier being ignorant?

OK. Do you know why outsourcing was originally encouraged? It created unfair tax loopholes for American companies to setup shop in places like Central Europe, Central America, and Asia. These companies do not have to pay the same level of taxes on those businesses claimed via overseas transactions and with the cheap labor there and substantially lowered tax burden it became a good option for CORPORATIONS to move business overseas. But this was originally written this way because we were in a Cold War with Russia. American companies heavily vested in others gave the American populace a secure hedge against communism. But what happened when the wall came tumbling down? Between NAFTA, and the open trade agreements in Asia, American mega corporations like GE found they could doge up to $85 BILLION a year in taxes by rerouting much of their business out of country and most major corp's have done this too. This has decimated the American workplace and heightened the inequities between jobs done here vs. elsewhere. Here (provide insane health-care costs and abide by environmental regulations, and pay a decent wage) - China/India? Who gives a f*ck about their environment? Their country's sure don't? Pay and health-care? HA!

So we have American Businesses where the only people benefiting are those that hold the most stock, sit on the BoD, or have a C or V in front of their title. That's part of the reason behind the insane compensation packages they have.

Bush used to say and dollar not worth shit was good for America because all countries would invest in us. Of course reality is, they still wouldn't do that because we demand fair wages, pray to have health-care or benefits, and to build someone new there are significant environmental impact reviews which must be done. So the dollar ain't worth shit, the cost of all our fuels and non-U.S. natural resource costs go up (for us), and i still costs more to have a business here because you can pay a guy in Vietnam 50 cents an hour with no benefits, no health care, no environmental concerns and it's still cheaper overseas.

So for the love of God, look at some neutral economic impact dissertations. And if you're too lazy to find some from neutral sources and actually rad them.. then maybe you should just bow out of these kinds of discussions.

I'm so sorry to everyone for sounding like a prick, but once I take my Ambien and am this tired, I just lose all sense of being not stupid.

Someone tell me in the morning if I nailed the facts or not. I hope it's not the time where I thought Hinduism had progressed to be a fair and modern religion, instead of the bastion of inequality and violence it still is.

One more thing Bob. The war in Iraq is also killing our economy too (unless you're a defense contractor and then you've gotten filthy rich).

Last... for every job provided overseas in an American owned company, 2 people lose their jobs in the United States. Think the Middle Class benefits from this? Hell no. Think the rich do? If they're affiliated with those companies? Absolutely. Think the poor benefit? Republicans will convince you cheap Chinese goods were good for the poor people. But if the poor people had fricking good manufacturing Jobs they wouldn't be poor and buying lead-tainted,melamine-infested, un-sterile faked prescription based goods.

Remember when Bush said giving the the richest people the biggest tax breaks in a billion years would create jobs? Well, it created richer people and a fantastic negative 5.8 million jobs (thats before the current crisis blew up).

So let me rephrase this:

Bob, you tell me that ACORN is at fault for the current financial crisis.

Argg, so sorry this post is so argumementive and so sorry for any disrespect. I am really stressed right now. I'm a very nice person in reality... really. It's just this stuff riles me so bad.

He just declares me "dug in" and drops it, like when I challenged him to provide actual evidence that Gwen Ifill was "an Obama supporter" as they kept claiming. You know, something like her on record having said or written that she's voting for him, some public record that she's volunteered her time or given money to the campaign, stuff like that. Writing a factual profile of him (among those of others) in one book doesn't cut it.

Bertha Lewis, Acorn's chief organizer, said in a statement that came with the photo, “It has deeply saddened us to see Senator McCain abandon his historic support for ACORN and our efforts to support the goals of low-income Americans."

”We are sure that the extremists he is trying to get into a froth will be even more excited to learn that John McCain stood shoulder to shoulder with ACORN, at an ACORN co-sponsored event, to promote immigration reform," she said.

Bob, did I not mention "actual bills in Congress" in my thread or did you just read a quick summary and surmise I'm just an idiot loon? I think it's interesting you don't point out which parts of my post are wrong, but instead just say, "Bob Cherbu is right, jpinard is wrong" and then provide no substanctive links or information.
It's like you're the stereotypical Republican to a core. Spout out everyone's wrong, and then provide no actual facts. If you want to start a new thread so we don't ruin this one, that's fine... but I find it unfair you throw out my entire post as "WRONG", and don't offer a single rebuttal to any of it. And don't just say, "Hey I'm right because I wrote about this before". You asked me to provide information that was wrong in that CNN clip and I did. I doubt anyone here would disagree I made a concrete assertion there are inaccuracies in that video.

OH and by the way... McCain was a big supporter of ACORN too. So make sure you don't vote for McCain, otherwise you're voting for the further destruction of the American economy. Cuz it was ACORN's fault!

ACORN are reprehensible because they follow federal law about turning in every voter registration card that has been completely filled out even if they think it is fraudulent. Republicans hate law-abiding groups that try to help the poor and homeless vote, especially when a minuscule number of their volunteers turn out to be jokers.

More importantly, once the Republicans lose the election pointing at ACORN will allow them to internally avoid culpability in their own failure. "We didn't lose, we got cheated out of it by ACORN! Rabble rabble rabble!"

Hey, it's great that she has that kind of faith (although I find it loony--after all, God gave you a brain to judge your own self-interest and act accordingly, within moral limits), but I hope that most voters are a bit more pragmatic than that.

I rather enjoyed that interview.

Especially that being mayor of Wasilla was good training to be VP.

When asked "How?" she just kinda deer-in-headlights stared and jibbered "how?" back.

That bit was great. Though I have to give props to the guy who just says "you're a jackass" after a bit.

I think last night overall was one of the best Daily Shows ever. It was both funny and biting.

You can tell Jon is pissed about how ground zero is used as a prop by people who will then turn around and disrespect New York (and as someone who grew up there, I share his ire). Fortunately he produces the powerful funny from his annoyance (unlike Letterman's whining which rapidly got old).

Why is it great? What's good about it?

It's my firm belief that that kind of faith (aka dogmatism) is one of the greatest evils in the world. BTW, I don't believe that great faith or strong faith is evil...just dogmatism.

By the way, did anyone else notice how that woman gave a self satisfied smirk after almost every single statement. I can't imagine living my life like that.

"Honey, I finished cooking the spaghetti." <smirk> "So at work today, I figured out how to use some new video editing technology." <smirk> "I think J.S. Mill was kinda nutty." <smirk>

I know. Best shown in this clip:

There are few things about the GOP in the last 8 years that make me as angry as their bullshit cognitive dissonance treatment of 9/11 and NYC. The people at no risk from islamic extremist terrorists being the most terrified of attack, and letting their fear drive US policy. They hate New York and every other big city, but drape their F150's in "NEVER FORGET" outlines of the WTC.

In that Wasila clip above is an awesome example of that:

Asshole: You always hear the stories about New Yorkers, walk past somebody laying on the sidewalk. In small towns everybody helps each other... (mumble)... I think the biggest example of that is 9/11
Jones: But that happened in a big town.
Asshole: Well, the destruction, the destruction in the big town.
Jones: Yeah, and the deaths...
Asshole: Yeah. But ... it effected our... uh... economy... and everything

I mean, holy shit. This guy needs to be punched in the face for the rest of time.

It's obvious the Obama campaign has sent out secret memoranda to all their fellow democrats saying 'komrades! the day is almost upon us! don't let the cat out of the bag, but we're totally changing our tax hike to $120k'.
