I just LOVE how he deconstructs O'Rielly's show while being on it, and poor old Bill doesn't really know how to respond and just tries to keep moving as fast as possible.... And the Fox guys in the background laughing at Stewart's Fox jokes!

..man, I'm half way through and it's bloody awesome!

...holy shit, even when he doesn't say anything he owns O'Reilly. Fantastic. Thanks Anti.

While we're here, I love how O'Reilly completely patronizes his audience and completely fails to understand that he did. Stewart was speechless. Perfect. Hope Bill O's audience got that as well...

I loved this. Loved it. Calistas completely nails it, BTW. Beautiful.

Something cool after I watched the clip was the lead in to the next clip on the FNC website: "Is Nickelodeon Getting Political? Why is a children's network honoring Michelle Obama?"

Now I understand how these things work from reading Fidgit. How blog headlines are written to make you click through. Furthermore I understand that this is how cable news works as well. But that little header perfectly illustrates the point Jon Stewart was making.

The only thing I didn't like about this was Jon Stewart's repeated assertion that Bill O'Reilly is the voice of reason on Fox News. Crap. I really don't want to have to watch that show again. I already paid my dues on that. Maybe he was being ironic. Hopefully.

My favorite moment is at the end, when Bill totally effs up in his equating Brit Hume's proselytizing for Christianity on Fox News with Jon Stewart's espousing of liberalism. Christianity and liberalism. More telling than almost anything O'Reilly said. Oops for you, Bill O. Analogy fail. [This isn't entirely fair. Bill O'Reilly sucks at establishing equivalency. He's always been terrible at this.]

Anyway, such a great interview. Just great.

Yes, he was. Bill constantly fibs about little things and very big things to denigrate the left and whitewash the right. However, when pressed he will admit that Democrats are not trying to destroy America from within. He also once claimed that a hike on Capital Gains Tax from 15% to 20% would be OK. This makes him the voice of reason.

O'Reilly is the only pundit on FOX that will secede to some liberal talking points. I watched his show for a couple nights after HCR passed, and he really is the only pundit not completely trashing the bill due to partisan bias. After the president's speech about HCR a couple months ago, he disagreed with much of Karl Rove's bullshit when he came on as a guest.

He still has that "hometown traditional Christian" thing going on, but he does whip out a lot of common sense talk, even if some of it has trademark hints of bias. I think his interview with the Catholic teacher/priest about the daugter of a lesbian couple being expelled from a Catholic school kinda points to his occasional ability to be rational.

And to be fair, the man still has a political show to defend, you just cannot stand up to Jon Stewart. Anyone that does will quickly run to defend themselves by insulting Jon's show by calling it "only entertainment" in order to make themselves feel more credible.

What I thought was sad about O'Reilly in that interview is you can tell the guy is no fool but he is so "trapped" in his show's format he feels the need to constantly chuck out one-liners and stupid tricksy statements in an effort to get a rise out of his guests. Stewart did a superb job of never rising to any of the games and it made O'R look fairly lost and confused. I'd almost be interested in watching Bill O playing it more straight, but it might make him too moderate for Fox?

The best example of this for my money was O'Reilly trotting out his tired assertion that all Daily Show viewers are a bunch of slacker stoners. He's been saying that for years. I believe this stereotype was eventually officially debunked by some poll or other...not that it needed to be. But this was so long ago. Yet he still chucked it out there as a distraction. And Stewart just totally ignored it. Nice.

I'd almost be interested in watching Bill O playing it more straight, but it might make him too moderate for Fox?

You know, now that I think of it his personality is most moderate on the Factor. At least it used to be. I listened to his radio program years ago and that was always much more extreme. So I don't know if he can play it more straight. I wonder what that would do to the sales of his books.

Yeah good point, Cletus! These kids have no chance... trying to learn subject matter that the teacher doesn't even beleive in a society which already rejects that subject matter entirely. Gah it's just so depressing... this is in the most advanced country on earth for pete's sake.

I'm glad that the teacher fosters discussion in his classroom. Whether he's good at facilitating it is another matter. He seemed articulate and caring to me.

I'd LOVE to know what he said in response to the guy who said an African-American person couldn't have evolved from a white person. I mean, first of all, the reverse is far more likely. Anyhow, that kid's comment could spark a ton of other questions that could really educate these students, so despite that it sounds silly, it's an awesome starting point.

I don't know what I'd say.. It's too much for one day.. I guess I'd have to start with a lesson on archeology and human migration. But that would have to be after a lesson on speciation. Then call attention to how the white skin color pigmentation was a mutation (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/15/AR2005121501728.html).. and then--OH MY GOD OUR TEACHER IS PREACHING THAT WE CAME FROM BLACK PEOPLE.

Did you just suggest black people are further back on the evolutionary scale?

Mutation does not equal "down the evolution scale". As red heads, or people with fairer eyes aren't "higher".

Hence when humans migrated to less sun-intensive regions in the north, low vitamin D3 levels became a problem and lighter skin colors started appearing. White people of Europe, who have low levels of melanin, naturally have an almost colorless skin pigmentation, especially when untanned. This low level of pigmentation allows the blood vessels to become visible and gives the characteristic pale pink color of white people. The loss of melanin in white people is now thought to have been caused by a mutation in just one letter out of 3.1 billion letters of DNA.[8]

(from the Black people wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_people))

Dave Perkins

That's... nuts, imo. In 20k years one genetic mutation was able to spread over 1/2 the surface of the world? The converse of this is that we should see black skinned people falling dead like flies (more or less) in the Northern climates from Vitamin D deficiency, which pretty clearly doesn't happen.

While i don't doubt evolution i doubt the origin of this mutation came from 20kya. I strongly suspect they will eventually discover the origin of this allele - and indeed most "northern" racial differences - to be from interbreeding from Neanderthals.

Uuhh... No. We need a certin amount of sunlight to stay healthy, it stimulates vitamin E synthesis among other things.. (we also don't want too much, ie cancer) BTW, It looks like "insolation as a function of latitude" is a common astronomy/astrophysics problem for college students, so that's an easy (http://www.applet-magic.com/insolation01.gif) thing (http://www.applet-magic.com/insolation02.gif) to look up the math for. Short version, even accounting for weather variation, you get about triple the amount of solar input per meter in Costa Rica or Central africa that you do in Minnesota, Poland, Chicago, etc.

Also, we know that blacks have become whites and vice versa in only a few hundred years. Skin color changes relatively quickly even in reproductively isolated populations when you change the environmental variables that affect it. Of course, you won't get the other phenotypic variations, though. And actually, while they're not dropping dead, Africian Americans in the US and Blacks in Europe are getting Rickets Disease and similar problems way more often than would be expected. The main reason this isn't more serious? The relatively recent mass domestication of cows and production of milk (along with the loss of lactose intolerance in most populations). Most blacks living in relatively low-sun climates are fine because the miracles of modern society give them lots of replacement sources for the vitamins they need.

The 'Neanderthal theory' is pretty much crazypants.

That's an interesting data point about Rickets Disease. OTOH, we live far more sedentary, indoor, lifestyles than in the past.

As to the Neanderthal DNA, there is a new study that already has shown that there was some degree of in-breeding: http://news.discovery.com/human/neanderthal-human-interbreed-dna.html, and most relevant to my position, with none apparently in sub-saharan African populations (though the sample set of humans tested is rather uninformatively small).

I rather suspect we'll find similar in-breeding with other "pioneer" hominids as time goes on. The whole out-of-Africa at 20-30kya has always troubled me, as i just can't imagine the amount of diversity in human populations that we see evolving in such a short time frame, from relatively bottlenecked populations. I always assumed that this hypothesis was simply wrong, despite it's widespread acceptance, and that human populations left 800kya or even earlier. But interbreeding with existing hominid populations, that have had time to evolve regional adaptations, resolves both positions.

I always wonder for situations like this (or protesting G8/G20 etc), where you're going to be butting heads against "authority figures", shouldn't they take videos on their phone? There must be some kind of app that sends recorded video to a remote server semi-realtime, right?

(I wouldn't know, because I'm too cheap to pay for a data plan)

He then struck my hand again in an attempt to snatch the iPhone.

I struck him back, busting his lip.

I couldn't find a smaller clip that also had the beginning of the interview, but here's the full episode containing Colbert's interview (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showpost.php?p=2321692&postcount=62)with Laura Ingraham, author of the Obama Diaries. It's right after the 2nd break, in the third segment of the show.

"Ichabod Crane's Banshee Widow" is probably one of the classiest things I've seen Colbert own up to and handle well, but it's really all about the excerpts from the book itself. Colbert exploits the meta nature of the diaries to great effect.

Also, who thinks banshees are of Native American origin?

That's not what the ad says. It accuses Eric Holder of running a "Department of Jihad" and sharing Bin Laden's values (that's him in the background when they play the old "ask the question accusation" game). If you're not willing to recognize the obvious parallels, it's exactly the kind of "fear of the other" that the Willie Horton ad targeted. You simply use a recognizable enemy of the target audience to smear a political opponent that is unwilling to use race or religion baiting to the same reckless degree.

Point being, the Swedish ad is exceptional only because it is well made. The message itself is a fairly universal nativist dog whistle, and it crops up everywhere from time to time, whether in the form of Lyndon Larouche or the Tea Party.

My favorite quote from a border guard comes from when my friend and I were on our way to wifcon, the world in flames tournament held every year in Michigan. I am trying to figure out why I find Obama do much more persuasive and charismatic than any of the GOP candidates. Is it the manner of delivery or do the GOP really suck that much? He's in charismatic form in that video. It's the same form that lets him crush people in debates and casual interviews most of the time. FOX News spent a lot of time trying to make people believe that he needs a teleprompter to be a great speaker, but his ability to speak as if he wasn't insulting your intelligence has always been there.

Bush had a similar charismatic gift, except his language and tone didn't have the wit or intelligence so he resonated more with the retarded monkeys that make up half this country than with actual human beings.

Yes, it's something on a personal level; Obama's like the guy I could sit and talk with, and feel as if he also really wanted to spend time.

I just feel with Gingrich and Romney they'd be pretending to enjoy the conversation or they'd get impatient really quickly.

What the video is pointing out is that quite often, the left will try to shut down the discussion by dismissing the other side as racists or mcarthyites or facists, etc.

The reason I participate in discussions here is because we can have real debates.

You guys gotta admit, the discussions we ave together are quite a bit higher quality than say what you get with some half informed relative at thanksgiving or whatever.

What the video is pointing out is that quite often, the left will try to shut down the discussion by dismissing the other side as racists or mcarthyites or facists, etc.

I'm not buying that. The unfortunate reality is that America does have a long history of people using very facile and dishonest tactics to prettify some very hateful motives that underly various political proposals. Sometimes a racist/homophobic/generally hateful idea is just that, and needs to be clearly confronted as such. For example, letting someone else dictate the terms of debate and argue that their anti-gay initiatives are actually "pro-family" when they have no obvious "pro-family" initiatives or concerns beyond gay bashing is just a way of conceding defeat.

Yes, there are bad eggs on both sides who will try to shout down anyone who isn't in complete agreement but I don't believe there's any evidence that the modern America political left is some overusing accusations of racism or fascism or whatnot to shut down debate.

Then we'll just have to disagree on that. The race card gets used so routinely that it has become something of a joke at this point.

On the gay marriage thing, as someone who isn't religious, I have a hard time empathizing with why we're supposed to care if gay couples get married. But I am loath to ascribe hate as the motive to opposition to it.

Just because I don't understand why people would oppose it doesn't mean that those who do have some really base motivation.

Yes, we disagree on that. Some people do overplay that argument, but there are people all across the spectrum of political beliefs that use dishonest arguments to try and shut down the debate. Saying that the race card is overplayed is no more true than saying that "think of the children" or other such arguments is overplayed. The problem is dishonest discourse, which is a wider problem than any one ideological grouping.

On the gay marriage thing, as someone who isn't religious, I have a hard time empathizing with why we're supposed to care if gay couples get married. But I am loath to ascribe hate as the motive to opposition to it.

I dunno, the religious seem, in my experience, pretty explicit about their homophobia.

My understanding is that they think it's a sin.

I dunno though. Like I said, I can't relate to the religious thing. Once you're talking about magic super beings and people coming back from the dead or whatever I can't empathize.

And I don't mean that disrespectfully. I sincerely wish I was a believer. But I'm not.

But at the same time, I'm not willing to ascribe "hate" or "fear" as the motive here.

I tend to think that it's none of the government's business what consenting adults do as long as it's not infringing on someone else's rights.

No. Because those who opposed civil rights were generally pretty explicit that they thought blacks were inferior.

The anti-gay people are pretty explicit that they think homosexual people are inferior and that we need "protecting" from them. The "defense" in the defense of marriage act wasn't defense against terrorists.

Opposition to gays' right to marry *is* opposition to a civil right. "Civil" in this context doesn't mean "race-based," but "state/law-based."

I know a lot of people who are against gay marriage. Most Americans are against it.

I don't understand where their position comes from. But I'm not willing to ascribe hatred to it.

I want to understand it so I could debate it. But I don't. It's like "faith". I don't understand it. I wish I did.

Depends on how you ask the questions, actually, and how you categorize various answers.

True. You can get a majority in favor of the same effective thing if you call it "Civil Union".

That's why I don't want to ascribe hateful motives to those against gay marriage because they in turn favor civil unions even when it means the exact same legal rights.

Is it a trademark thing or what?

It doesn't actually mean the same legal rights unless you enact it at a federal level.

Also, calling interracial marriages "civil unions" would not have been sufficient for the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia, so I don't see why it should be sufficient for gay marriage.

Finally, those demographics and states which the liberal establishment (ahahaha, oh man, I made a funny) asserts stand in the way of gay marriage also stand clearly against civil unions. I'M LOOKING AT YOU HERE, NORTH CAROLINA, YOU BUNCH OF HATEFUL FUCKS.
