Suck it, Ben Stein.

It's almost worth having a global recession just to see the smarmy smirks disappear from the faces of the absurdly misinformed or outright lying FOX talking heads. The way they laughed, with crinkled foreheads, and looked at each other in bemusement as Peter S. essentially prophesied, oooh, it makes me want to kill television.

Ben Sones
11-17-2008, 06:49 AM
"Peter, I wish we had more time with you--I know you want to continue that expose on Santa Claus."

I mean, seriously. I know we're talking about Fox here, but what a bunch of patronizing pricks. These assholes owe their viewers (and Peter Schiff) a public apology. If you are going to throw around that kind of mocking, self-righteous certainty about how things are going to play out, then you had better be prepared to man up and take your knocks when it turns out that you are horribly, utterly wrong, and the guy that you were mocking is 100% right. Not that I expect any of those guys to do that; these days they are probably saying that they saw this coming all along, if only someone had listened!

Dave Perkins
11-17-2008, 06:53 AM
And Peter, somehow, managed to smile -- sincerely smile! -- at the Santa Claus line. How, I don't know. I wanted to start tossing cream pies. And "tossing cream pies" is code for something truly vile. I don't know exactly what vile thing, but it's vile.

I was more impressed with Ben Stein & his Merrill Lynch stock pick. He was just as wrong as the last guy, but Mr. Stein made the mistake of offering a rationale for his pick... one that was 100% bullshit.

He was the Ron Paul campaign economic advisor. He has said Obama will be an "economic disaster". He is a hardcore free market, no regulation guy. He's also one of those "buy gold" types. His father is a well known tax protester (not fair to hold that against him, just a note).

In other words, he's kind of out in crackpot territory. There are other people who predicted the economic crises who are not.

I love those proportional tax pie charts. It's such big surprise if you don't make much and you don't own anything your proportion of the total taxes collected is going to be lower. Somebody stop the presses!

Otherwise, I think there's some fair points about the tax code in there even if the makers of the video are so blind that they miss the apparent income inequality in their statistics.

Uhm, no, but I'd love to hear what your other requirements of patriotism are.

Well, paying the taxes one owes under the law is a subset of obeying the laws which is, at least in the classical understanding (in Plato's _Crito_ if I remember right--the one where Socrates turns down his friends' offers to bust him out of prison and spirit him away from Athens) a duty of patriotism. I suppose some might say other requirements would include some kind of mandatory national service (either military, as in Heinlein's _Starship Troopers_, or otherwise).

As A-B says in his own inimitable way, there really is no guarantee that someone who is certified to teach a subject is actually qualified to do so by any reasonable measure. There are teachers who have actual content mastery for what they teach, but it's not nearly as common as you'd hope. If No Child Left Behind were a serious proposal instead of a mess, it would it would include a comprehensive way to routinely assess teachers. The standardized teacher tests are not capable of assessing deficiencies on their own, and I would argue that the current generation seem targeted at reassuring teachers and parents rather than actually testing their knowledge of a subject.

Here in GA, you can literally have taught nothing but math for years, take a single test, and be put in charge of any other subject at any grade level. The test is arguably better than what was there before, but not by enough.

And who is this Pastor anyway? Some fringe kook? Well, he's a former VP of the Southern Baptist Convention. I don't know which way that tips the answer scale.

By the way, the strange phrase he keeps repeating is "imprecatory prayer", which relates to the Imprecatory Psalms, lovely Old Testament inerrant word of God sentiments such as: "How blessed will be the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks."

Rachel Maddow goes after Obama for flip-flopping on the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#31177018)

No shouting. No screaming. There's not even much righteous indignation. Just Ms. Maddow denouncing Mr. Obama using calmly recited facts.

I've never been much of a Maddow fan, but this clip goes a long way to making me a convert.

Bill Moyers Journal (http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/08212009/watch.html) on U.S. health care. He follows several case studies to see how they're being grossly underserved by the current system. It also becomes apparent how their neglect ends up costing them (and the system) a lot more money.

There's no startling revelations in the piece, but it was very sobering. It makes me feel very blessed that I have the insurance that I do, and it makes me feel very angry that so many want to deny their fellow citizens basic care.

One blog I was at had a multiparagraph statement about the second incident, but I couldn't find it anywhere else.

One thing to keep in mind is that organizations like this are often dealing people so marginalized by society that they are not only punished by circumstance but for their circumstances, so I'm not surprised that ACORN employed individuals would help prostitutes, drug addicts, or the homeless find living arrangements, vote, etc even if they were aware these people would continue in self-destructive behavior.

But the the congressman thing and the blatant disregard for the children of an explicit sex trade ring is.. I don't even have words. The former has no justification and the latter would not only require such extremely twisted logic, but it wouldn't necessarily even preclude talking to the proper authorities even with logic that twisted. It's so outrageous that it even tests credulity.

Edit: Though, a hard truth (and probably a unpreventable one) is many people that work in organizations that deal directly with some of the worst elements of our society have backgrounds in that. As a drug addict I knew once said, the first place they'd go if they wanted to score right out of prison is an NA meeting.

That's cute, but defunding a specific organization is not necessarily a Bill of Attainder. A bill of attainder is a bill laying out a punishment for a person or group of persons for declared misconduct without trial. Defunding an organization is not a punishment, its a discretionary power. FINING them would be considered a punishment. Congress is not required to fund any organizations.

While the regulatory purpose of ensuring that federal funds are properly spent is a legitimate one, it is not clear that imposing a permanent government-wide ban on contracting with or providing grants to ACORN fits that purpose, at least when the ban is applied to ACORN and its affiliates jointly and severally. In theory, under the House bill, the behavior of a single employee from a single affiliate could affect not only ACORN but all of its 361 affiliates. Thus, there may be issues raised by characterizing this legislation as purely regulatory in nature. While the Supreme Court has noted that the courts will generally defer to Congress as to the regulatory purpose of a statute absent clear proof of punitive intent, there appear to be potential issues raised with attempting to find a rational non-punitive regulatory purpose for this legislation. Thus, it appears that a court may have a sufficient basis to overcome the presumption of constitutionality, and find that it violates the prohibition against bills of attainder.

Is it just me, or is Maddow uncomfortably close to channeling Jon Stewart? Don't get me wrong, I love Stewart, and I'm generally in agreement with what Maddow says editorially (and as a reporter). But nevertheless, her mannerisms seem completely ripped-off from Stewart, and that in it self makes me hard to take her seriously. As Stewart himself notes, he's a comedian, not a newscaster. And so it makes it hard for me to take a newscaster who too resembles him seriously, even when I agree with her!

The biggest similarity that I notice, which I'm guessing is what you're seeing, is how both Stewart & Maddow often let the audience see their sheer disbelief at the shenanigans of the right. Oh... and they both get kinda snarky. But Stewart mugs for the camera a lot more, and Maddow's reports tend to be much more eloquent, fact based, and joke-free. Another difference: Maddow consistently seems bemused by the right, while Stewart is often obviously outraged.

They really don't seem all that similar to me.

Holy shit.

edit: on further viewing, even holier shit. The bailiff and deputy were both out of line there, and both blatantly disregarded the law. And the judge was just plain stupid, from claiming to not see anything to then making up something on the fly about courtroom security. Based on this, the case is most likely going to be dismissed in its entirety regardless of whether the guy committed any crime or not. Good going, bailiff/deputy/judge.

Dumbest bailiff ever? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIoyJ-LyAaE)

But wait, there's more!

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Wednesday it will be a cold day in Maricopa County before one of his officers apologizes for taking an attorney’s confidential files…

“Superior Court judges do not order my officers to hold press conferences,” Arpaio said in a news release. “I decide who holds press conferences and when they are held.”

An attorney for the sheriff, Tom Liddy, went even further, saying it’s unlikely Stoddard will go to jail for defying the judge’s order. “Folks should not hold their breaths,” he said.

But the sheriff’s office, which runs the county jails, doesn’t plan to defy the order outright. Liddy said the agency will challenge it in a higher court.

The attorney said the order violates Stoddard’s rights to free speech.

The judge “cannot order somebody to lie,” Liddy said. “Of course he’s not sorry for doing his job…It’s absurd on his face.”
