This once again shows my utter noobness on a console, but I'm pretty confused in this game (and its manual). Instead of just saying what button presses do what, they instead come up with a whole bunch of other abbreviations. Sure "G" means guard, but why not just say, "A" button? My memory is so bad right now I have to keep going back to try and figure out what alphanumeric stands for what button.
Another very confusing thing is on the game controls page. For example it says:
Press A+B+K+G simultaneously ........................ Left bumper
huh? Why doesn't it just say the left bumper does something... additionally it doesn't even say what that combo does?
Last thing is when you do story mode, just before you start a bout it shows your picture and sometimes there are a few extra icons below it. I'm assuming those are special powers, but how do you know how to perform those special powers/moves? For instance one might be invisibility.
Thanks!

Because while there's a default control setup, the Soul Calibur series of fighting games has a history of people remapping the controls as fairly standard procedure, and there are, in fact, several different control profiles preloaded. They don't know which one a given player will use, so they write the moves down in a configuration neutral manner.

And because the buttons are labeled as such on the arcade machine, and so those are the button names that SC players are familiar with and refer to. It also makes it console agnostic, so you don't have to worry about a 360 player considering a move being done with X while a PS3 player considers it done with square. The Left Bumper is simply a shortcut in case you want to do a move that requires all four buttons together but don't want to hit them all.
Seriously, GameFAQs is your friend.

Sorry, I have been going a bit posting nuts lately. And the explanation above makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
