Ok, so after asking my girl what her social security number is, I started thinking: What the fuck is with Social Security?

A quick poll of myself and Chet couldn't come up with a good response, so it was suggested that I ask here. I'm a johnny work-a-day game reviewer and not too swift on the uptake. I must know, AMERICA MUST KNOW. Well, I guess America does know, so uh, tell me.

Also: Chet pointed out that there's a possible 100 million unique numbers. How does that work with 280 million people?

There's more numbers than that:

xxx-xx-xxxx => yyy yyy yyy => 999,999,999

That's Nine-hundred and ninety-nine million.

Social Security is a program that lets the working stiffs of the country support the retired stiffs.

I don't plan on listing my social here because thats just crazy talk, but I want to know what each series means. SOMEONE EXPLAIN

The first three numbers are a geographical area.

I know the first three numbers are assigned by state.

For instance, the fact that my SSN starts with "43x" indicates that I was unlucky enough to be living in Louisiana (Shrevepit, not the good part down around Nawlins) when I got my Social Security card.

You can find the state list at:

Close, but the good part is actually 2 hours west, in cajun country.

Never actually made it to Baton Rouge, but I met some of your women when I went to college at USM... And from that experience I shall have to definitely say that the Baton Rouge is all right with me.

Ah, southern girls. So polite, cute accents, and they don't have hair in weird places like the yankee chicks up here.

(Pardon my mysogeny, ladies. Er, women.)

If more than 19998 children were born in Sweden in a single day, the system would be so screwed.

NOOOO Denny! Baton Rouge stinks!**

I was referring to Lafayette, LA. Home of the University of Louisiana (formerly Univ. of SW LA -USL). IIRC, our schools played each other a couple of times while I was in college. As far as pretty girls, several LSU transfers tell me USL had a higher concentration.

**Literally, it does smell funny here. With the paper mills to the north and the giant Exxon refinery within spitting distance of the state capital building, the air can get pretty rank at times.
