Basically Sony will win the system war because her kid says so after seeing MGS4 on G4 and selling his 360 and games to buy a PS3.

I know MGS4 has popped up on G4 before last week. Before last year, even.

And you never sell a system. Games, sure, but systems, never. Especially not current gen ones. He's going to regret it come Fall.

Other than a good excuse to use that graphic, um, why did this need to be remarked upon? Was it THAT annoying that there's someone this uniformed with access to a major news site?

Yes, yes it was.

It beats talking about knife fights!

I wonder if she'll writer another "story" based on her kids actions when he starts complaining about the big mistake he made once he's done with MGS4 and realizes how limited his options are. Or when he realizes Gears2 is a 360 exclusive.

I remember kids like that when I worked at GameStop. Kids will trade everything they own in to switch systems to get the next big game with no long-term consideration of what the consequences might be. Of course the people at GameStop are going to endorse his action - they just made a pile of profit on everything he traded in and on the used copy of MGS4 they sold him.

Looks to me like mom and kid will both learn something. :-)

How does this kid who knows all about video game trends three months before they come out only hear about MGS4 when he sees Sony's press conference?

You could get your video game news exclusively from Yahtzee and you'd be more up to date than this guy.

Yes, this reporter is definitely an important figure in social history. We must listen to her pearls of wisdom since she is obviously such a prime mover in human consciousness.

Yeah, the sad truth is that people like her or the random beardman who writes a videogame column in say the Wall Street Journal will have more sway on game purchases than 3000 fansites combined.

There's some kind of divine injustice when there are bloggers with deep insights who get relegated to some far off corner of the internet while morons like this reporter have feature columns on nationally syndicated news agencies.

Er, I think she was writing that as more of an anecdote about how children can be. You know, like that stuff in Reader's Digest. You noticed the name of the column, right?

[My son] loved the Xbox graphics, and once he was old enough to play “Halo,” he loved the games. He graduated to the Xbox 360, Xbox Live, “Gears of War,” etc.
If her son is 16 now, that means he was 9 when the original Halo, an M-rated game, came out. She doesn't mention when he was "old enough" for Halo, but clearly it was while still an adolescent, maybe even a pre-adolescent.

So clearly the real story here is: Jane Wells is a horrible parent who buys murder simulators for her underaged child!!! And CNBC, by publishing her column, is officially sanctioning this!!! Damn liberal media!!!

Her next proof that Sony is winning will be the way her 16 year old son prefers the crisp image he gets watching high definition Blu-Ray pornography over boring ol' SD pornos he watches on his DVD player.

So your kid who is 16 in 2008 was old enough to play Halo when he was 11? If your kid is 11 he needs a Nintendo that he can play with his school friends, not an Xbox with a subscription service. It would be a sensationalist article if it wasn't so inept and myopic.

When my youngest son was 7 or 8 I let him play Unreal Tournament (with language and gore turned off, but still). I kind of regret it now but at least he spends much more time making maps than playing the game. I don't think it's caused any problems, though maybe I won't know until he's older.

He is a UT snob, though. He frequently tells me about why he thinks the original UT is superior to UT2004 and UT3.

"Jane, please leave the gaming commentary to the gaming journalist. You really are beginning to sound like a Sony-bobbing, Microsoft-hating freak. Besides, what kind of person would intelligently decide the winner of the console war by the actions of a hormone-controlled, irrational 16-year-old boy.Classy.

I'm not sure that's true. What about a humorous article presenting anecdotal evidence that Sony has managed to increase their mind share needs demolishing anyway? The only confusion I see is that I think her son was actually holding out for E3 to see if an Xbox version of MGS4 would be announced. Instead its exclusivity was reaffirmed so he decided to go ahead and trade his stuff in for a PS3.
