Dear Tom and Mark,

I know we haven't always seen eye to eye about Freelancer and furries, but I hope you can put aside all of our "differences" and "furry squabbles" and agree to give us a Hardware Forum!

Thanks in advance.

I'll even volunteer to moderate.

Note the word "moderate". That is not a synonym for "I'll respond to every post" ;-)

But what about flying heroes?

We should definitely have a Flying Heroes forum as well.

Lets have a forum for just for zingers. Maybe there is a way to programmatically limit posts to one line.

Well it's 25 in favor, 4 against at the moment.

What do you say Tom and Mark?

I think we'd rather have as few categories as possible. I think a hardware forum is a bit too rarefied. Besides, it's not like all the hardware threads are getting lost or being ignored because they don't have their own category. Or are they?

But I'll bring it up at the next board meeting and see what they think.

Can we get rid of Politics & Religion and make it illegal to post anything related to those two topics in any other forum?

I'm still waiting for the first on-topic response for my hardware question.. and yes, I do think it would be nice to segregate those threads into their own area. Like Cleve said: seperate.. but equal.

We had to do that because You People were incapable of ignoring Cleve. So just get Loyd Case to start trolling about how Macs suck, Bill Gates is the anti-Christ, and Information Just Wants to Be Free, and I'm sure we'll have to take drastic measures until someone figures out the appropriate animal picture for soothing the angry trollees.

-Tom

P.S. Not to be confused with trolleys.

And the odds are you'd still be waiting even if it were split into a separate forum. Everyone you need to see your subject has probably seen it.

Appropriate animal for Hardware trollees?

Bub, you should probably wait for the trolling, and then the trollees, before resorting to such drastic measures. And I don't think Penguins are suitable. They should be reserved for Very Special Cases only.

You sound like Ross Perot in 1992!

Maybe you're an anti-geekite!

Why do we need a dedicated forum for one miserable film:

The thread has 290something views at this point, vs 860 registered users of the forum.

Granted, at least half of the registered users are probably never going to post again, and all the cool people (us included, natch) read the forums daily, but someone knowledgeable could conceivably have missed wumpus's post.

Of course, anyone who cares about Athlon MP systems probably gets a stiffy just looking at that subject line, so I suppose wumpus has just been passed over in this case.

Summation: You're wrong, Tom! You're right, Tom!

Like Loyd Cases? I kid.
Just trying to get a consensus on the animal. I missed the doggie memo somehow and the proliferation both shocked and awed me.

You mean green and sour?

On a serious note, I still think of this sort of thing when someone talks about "Macs":

http://66.216.98.167/mcprod/products/McIntoshProduct.jsp?product_id=17

Unfortunately, I can't afford any of their gear.

The closest thing I ever came to owning McIntosh gear was a 2001 Subaro Outback H6. It had a McIntosh car audio system. The sound quality was amazing, for car audio. Unfortunately, I rolled it when it was only eight months old. I walked away from it, but the car was a wreck.
I ended up with a Toyota Highlander, with crappy JBL speakers and no subwoofer. *sigh*.

*shrug* I think it's just that no one else who has read the thread has done a dual Athlon system (your question was more specfic though IIRC), and they all realize there's no point in posting, "Nope, can't help you, sorry."

Which, you have to admit, is a tad better than ad hoc advice from someone who has never had a dual Athlon. Here is a sample:

Dual Athlon? Make sure you're wearing your wrist strap and have grounded yourself before you remove those parts from their plastic.

I thought dual processor boxes were useless for playing games. I heard that you just aren't going to get a real performance gain unless you are running a server or doing something written specifically with Multi-Processor in mind.

That's correct. There are maybe two games that can do proper multithreading.

However, if you're running something like long compiles, or other CPU intensive stuff in the background, the second CPU can be used for games. You'd better have a boatload of memory, though.

I recently decided my aging server-- a BX-chipset Asus P2B / dual P3-800 system -- is in dire need of an upgrade. It's taking way too long to encode VBR MP3s on that system!

Does the variable bit rate encoder really use SMP?

wumpus
07-10-2003, 06:26 PM
It does when you are using two instances of Audiograbber with CPU affinity set to CPU 0 and CPU 1 respectively.
