Besides the Asus Eee series (which I know about but which might be a big small for comfortable use), can anyone point me to especially good Linux laptop options?

Thinkpads have always been good Linux laptops.
If you look at a supplier of Linux laptops such as EmperorLinux (http://www.emperorlinux.com/) you'll see managed to get a good variety of Sonys, Dells, and Lenovos to be fully functional under Linux. I think as long as you choose your wireless card carefully you should be able to do well with just about anything. I used a behemoth 17" Dell Precision laptop as a Linux workstation for a couple of years with good results (besides what it did to my back to carry it around).
