That's the worst Rick Astley video I've ever seen.

I am upset that you got my hopes up that my baser desires to see a terrible injury, or possibly even a grisly death, in a horrible car race-related accident and then pulled the rug out from under me.

I love that phrase, "not for the squeamish". In fact, I love the word "squeamish". I wish there were more declensions of the word -- "squeamy", "squeamed", "squeaming"... the squeamical possibilities should be endless!
Edit: Heck, "declensions" is another underrated winner.

I know a guy who was there. Pretty horrible. I'm stunned that YouTube would allow that sort of Faces of Death stuff to be posted, though. Well, maybe not stunned. Somewhat surprised.
Edit: Then again, I once nearly got fired for making a Dale Earnhardt joke 'too soon'. So maybe I'm a hypocrite.

It is kinda funky they'd allow that video on there. I guess it's not, um, horrifically graphic, except maybe in the stills, and some of them you can barely tell what's there.

If you look at the 'related videos' there's a bunch of other 'DEATH VID!' things. Pretty creepy.

I think it's the music that kinda makes that footage even creepier.

A horrible accident with a happier ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tJY_f7Djmw) (he broke a toe). I was at this race, though at the opposite end of the track, and it was still rather unsettling as the reporting on it unfolded.

Reading a little bit more about the accident, I didn't realise that there were actually two fatalities that occured there:
Pryce was directly behind Stuck's car along the main straight, Stuck himself sensed Van Vuuren and moved to the right to avoid both marshals, missing Bill by what Tremayne reports to have been a matter of "millimetres". From his position behind Stuck, Pryce could not see Van Vuuren and was unable to react as fast as Stuck. He struck the teenage marshal at approximately 170 mph. Van Vuuren was thrown into the air and landed yards in front of Zorzi and Bill. He died upon impact with Pryce's car. The fire extinguisher smashed into Pryce's head, before striking the Shadow's roll hoop, which threw it over the adjacent grandstand. It came to earth in the car park to the rear of the stand, where it hit a parked car and jammed its door shut.
The impact with the extinguisher had wrenched Pryce's helmet upward, and he had been partially decapitated by the strap. Death was almost certainly instantaneous

It's sad that fans of Pryce blamed the kid he hit.

--- AlanAre there a disproportionate number of fatalities on South African tracks, or does it just seem that way because a bunch of the famous ones were there?

Oh wow, I have seen that video before, but I did not know the racer died too. Fuck, that's depressing.
This accident is a bit more uplifting.

Oh yeah I was watching this when it happened, was very brutal and am still shocked Kubica didn't get injured any more than that.
Generally F1 is much better safety-wise than even 10 years ago, but there are times when some things happen and people are very lucky really bad things didn't happen. Last year at the Nürburgring there was a downpour several minutes into the start of the race, and a line of cars hydroplaned before they made it into a tight turn and went into a large gravel pit. After 4-5 cars went in, the stewards were out there doing their thing and cars were still coming down the track and hydroplaning in. Worse, the safety car comes out onto the track right at the same place the hydroplaning is going on. He's about to make the turn and another F1 (Trulli I think) is now sliding and just barely misses the safety car, and nearly plows into one of the car tractors, which is out trying to retrieve another vehicle (in fact I think he dings it). That situation had mess and broken bones written all over it, and they were really lucky none of that happened.

What were the other ones? In Formula 1, I can only think of the Pryce accident. I'd guess that there are a far greater number of fatalities from GPs held in Italy and Germany (esp. the old Nurburgring).
Outside of F1, there's always France and the 83 people who died at the 1955 Le Mans 24 hrs...

Looks like there were 3 driver deaths (+1 steward death) in South Africa. Ironically, Peter Revson, the last American to win a race, died in 1974 and was replaced by Pryce, who as noted above died on the same track three years later.

As bad as Kubica's crash was, Ryan Briscoe's ride at Chicagoland was far scarier.

He now drives for Penske in the IRL. When I was watching this live, I was sure he didn't survive, yet his injuries were relatively minor.
Kenny Brack suffered serious injuries in this one, but he was performing with his rock band at the Speedway last summer. It ended his career (though he qualified for the 500 a couple years later).

I used to have a pic that was printed in the Dallas Morning News of Kenny Brack's car shattering apart in mid-air and put it on my old office door. I'm kinda mad I didn't keep it because it was an amazing shot of a rather horrific accident, definitely the worst in any of the racing sports at TMS, far as I can remember.

Edit: I think it was this one, much larger of course:

Yeah, as bad as the stock car crash was recently, that was nothing compared to Brack's disintegration on the backstretch. 214 g's!
The Speedway has apparently been researching materials to replace the metal fencing used at most speedways today in order to avoid future crashes where the cars get airborne and ripped to shreds by the catch fence. They're looking at various see through plastics, etc. It might take some years for it to happen, but they came up with the SAFER barrier so I suspect they can come up with something for catch fencing too.

Worst Indy 500 crash I've seen in recent years has to be Stan Fox's in 1995. Those pictures of Fox's car flying through the air with his legs dangling from the front were terrible.
Yes that was a very nasty one.

I know it's not the main issue, but I can't imagine that being good for the sound from the grandstands.
