Cards are nice, flowers are good, booze is better. Now if you'll excuse me, I have 150+ envelopes to stuff.

It's a sexist holiday (if you can even call it a holiday). I've never gotten anything, but the women I've worked with have always gotten flowers and a nice card. The last time I was working in such a capacity when this day fell, I was handed a day-long copying job, while the ladies were taken to lunch.

"Administrative Professionals" - Is that the new politically correct phrase they are using to describe "secretaries"?
Not long ago it was Personal Assistant and now it is Administrative Professionals? You even get your own day of celebration?
You people are starting to get ideas above your station.

I don't have a secretary, but my bookkeeper/banquet manager is a guy, and he gets hooked up pretty well by us. This year a nice card and a $100 Best Buy gift card and a bottle of wine.

Next thing you know we'll start having 'Student Day', another day students get off for no real reason.

You mean like Student Worker Week, which was last week? We bought all our student workers lunch, which is more than I expect to get today.
Also, triggercut, would you like to have a secretary? My resume is really very strong.

If they are going to celebrate something like this it should be exclusively for secretaries that possess some unique skill such as shorthand, and, um, well that is about it, isn't it?

I love that you're both in DC. I think it would be totally awesome if this actually happened.

I think the problem with 'Secretary' is that the word is coded in a very specific manner and invokes all the crap that it has drawn in this very thread: "Oh, shorthand, what else are they good at... Stuff your bra... Wear a dress."
'Secretary' is coded female. Most people, when they hear that word, think of a woman in a skirt, with glasses and her hair up. Maybe a pencil stuffed in her bun, or doing her nails with the phone cradled in the crook of her shoulder. But not everyone who works as an admin asst. is a woman. And, these days, that position requires more than shorthand and 60 words a minute.
It can be hard to negotiate for better pay, better hours, more advancement opportunities when your job title is as loaded as 'Secretary'.
I knew it was Secretaries Day because we got an emailed coupon from Texas de Brazil and my 11 year old & I have been looking for a good time for a return trip there. It's one of those Brazilian meatoriums where the world first heard the words "No, thank you, no more filet wrapped in bacon".
We'll both try to fast all day to ensure maximum carnivorage. And all at 25% off!
You mean like Student Worker Week, which was last week? We bought all our student workers lunch, which is more than I expect to get today.
You sound bitter. Imagine how us regular working stiffs, who don't get any annual recognition, feel.
The best place to be a secretary is NYC. Damn, they get paid alot.
Yeah but doesn't the cost of living there cancel it out?
Only if you live in the city.

Yay, the moment a small group of people start feeling that there are negative connotations to a title we should change it to something that sounds more verbose and impressive even though the job description and responsibilities remain the same. This is political correctness run amuck, and by George, I'm going to call it out when I see it.
Have a little pride in your job even if it is something as humble as being someone's lackey. The world needs you too.
My point about the shorthand is that no secretaries these days know it, and fluency in shorthand is actually a skill worthy of some respect in my opinion. It's a hell of a lot more impressive than mastery of the Outlook calendar functionality.

Congratulations Harry F. Klemfuss of Young & Rubicam, you did your job well.
Young & Rubicon can't have had a London branch in '52, as this day was completely unknown to me until this thread. We have Boxing Day, which I guess is a similar concept.

Money, although I have also heard slightly used goods.
Boxing Day is a traditional celebration dating back to the Middle Ages, of which the primary practice is the giving of gifts to employees or to people in a lower social class. The name has numerous folk etymologies.
A Christmas box is, in English tradition, a clay box used in artisan shops. Apprentices, masters, visitors, customers, and others would put donations of money into the box, like a piggy bank, and then, after Christmas, the box would be shattered and all the contents shared among the workers of the shop.

I didn't get any recognition either, regardless of the holiday, which was sort of my point. :)
I'm not bitter at all. I have a pretty good idea that I carved out my own destiny in college by steadfastly refusing to major in anything practical or suited to my personality. Generally I like my job, and I'm very good at it.

So when exactly is IT Worker Appreciation Day again? Oh yeah, that's right, it's the second Saturday in September, at 2:00am, and we celebrate in front of the mail server by calling Microsoft Bangladesh where they serenade us with the sweet sounds of Bolly Sagoo while instructing us to clear our cache and remount the information store in heavily accented English that only we, as systems professionals, have learned to understand through years of exposure. It just gets better every year.
My admin assistant (that a few managers share) reminded me about this day yesterday since I purposefully ignored it. She sucks, so she doesn't get anything except possibly holding onto her job. The fact she felt the need to remind me also speaks volumes about her.

I know it does and I never claimed to be reasonable. I hate the whole forced to give a gift thing anyway. That's why I have a wife and an assistant because I probably wouldn't do any of it. I've done it for other assistants, but not this one. I don't think she deserves anything.
The assistant actually reports directly to the CEO, I just have more work for her than he does. He didn't do anything either which is probably why we get along so well.

Since my on topic posting has garnered some support, her is my latest reason for not doing anything for her.
She sometimes sings to herself, loudly. I've asked her to stop. The other day I very politely ask her to stop again. She then walks over to my office and asks if she can close my office door! I swear I'm starting to feel like Murphy Brown.
