View Full Version : WoW: Tom, Bruce, Mark, and you, on Frostwolf (uhh, Horde only, plz!)

You guys know about this World of Warcraft game thing, right? Are any of you playing it? Are any of you playing it on Frostwolf? On the Horde side? Who aren't doing anything else this Friday night (4/18)?
Me, Bruce Geryk, and Mark Asher have level 23 characters who are going into some sort of Shadowfang Keep Fortress instance thing, and we could use a couple of folks we know to come along. Want to join us so we aren't at the mercy of what PUG* we can form?

* This means "pick up group", and it's what you call it when you hook up with random yahoos, who may or may not be helpful.

I'm almost willing to resubscribe and level a character to 23 between now and then. I just bought Sins of a Solar Empire though (getting it tomorrow).

I'm still holding out a bit before I jump into the World of Warcraft thing. I think its just a fad.

What class do you want? I could be persuaded to make a guest appearance, possibly :)

04-15-2008, 11:29 PM
Uh, what class? Let's see, I'm a paladin. Mark is a, uh, a thing of some sort. Maybe a wizard? And Bruce is, I think, a hunter. He's a really dorky looking elf is mainly what I know. So we've got enough of those.
-Tom, obviously not the group leader for this expedition

Man I have been looking for an excuse to get back into WoW but can't even start until next week-you guys thinking of doing stuff like this semi-regularly by any chance?

Hah! I will perhaps roll up a moocow Druid and come join in on your fun. :) Prepare yourselves for Missbeef, the Tauren Druid!

Calvin, for me, this probably isn't going to be a regular thing. When I have time to get into an MMO for fun, it'll be LOTRO. But I'm pretty sure a fair number of folks on the forum do this way more than semi-regularly. :)

My brand-new belf warlock Zigi is desperately trying to catch up to SFK range by Friday.
Will... he... make it?? Only time will tell. I think he's 7 now, but maybe I can get him to 9 tonight...

Bah, only low level horde I have are on Arathor or Sargeras.

Tom I thought you said one of you was a priest, so you had healing and tanking (with the pally) covered?
Athryn made the smart play; Druids are a good choice because they can fill any role. I went with a warlock. Oh well, he's level 11 now.

I could move over a 19 twink warrior I abandoned, get a couple levels, and you'd have a ridiculously overgeared tank.

I am a priest. That means that healing will be an issue! I'm new at healing. I really am only playing so that when I let Brooski die and he complains about my lack of healing, I can say, "Physician, heal thyself!" I've been saving that one for awhile.

I could roll a cow druid, but by Friday it'll probably be below lvl 10, so no help to y'all. ;)

Is this for a Tom vs Bruce? Because I've never played wow, but I'd sure like to read about your shenanigans.

Yes come to Arathor so that my Alliance toons can gank you (particularly Bruce) and camp your graves. hehe

I'm in the same boat, but substitute "childless" for "in college".
My god, I miss WoW. I probably wouldn't trade my wife and kid for it, though.
Probably.

I do miss my WoW days. I'm afraid of what it might do to my life if I start playing it again, though. Burning Crusade is awfully tempting, and more so since I haven't yet had the chance to play it.

I've been looking for some folks who are just starting out in WoW so that we can play through a bunch of low level content that I've never seen before. The guild I usually play with (The Wanderers) has been raiding for years so there's no way for me to catch up with them. As an aside, Mark played with us back in SB and kept trying to get us into wars like his last name was Bush so that he could get fodder for his review. Good times.
I'll roll up a new character and see if I can get to SFK level by Friday, which is doubtful, but worth a shot.
Heck, if there's enough interest, we could even have TWO groups playing...

My character's name is Amover, a dumb name, but it stood for Ambiguous Mafia Overflow. It was a bank mule character for a guild I was in when I played WoW back when it was still in beta.
Anyway, I will be on Frostwolf tonight, leveling to 23 sometime later in the evening. Give me a shout.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but is this really possible? To level up to level 23 in only a few hours? World of Warcraft is one of the MMOs I missed out on, but if it really eliminates the grind to this degree, maybe I should check it out.
I remember in DAoC in took me at least a month to get to level 23. Then another month to get to level 30. Then another month to get to level 34. I saw the diminishing pace, and when it took me another month to get to level 36, I quit playing.

You can get to 20 in 2-4 days of casual-intense playing. You won't get there just dilly-dallying about and taking in the sights, but it's not going to be any real effort either. With patch 2.3, this pace continues through the mid 30s if you can sustain the dedication ...

The Drop Bears (http://dropbearsguild.garoun.net/forum/index.php), the QT3-spawned guild on Moonrunner, is perhaps not new but is quite dedicated to its lower level players, and there are always people bringing up new alts. The Noob Squad has so far done every low level dungeon and is now rocking Scarlet Monastery; several members have gone through the Onyxia chain and the squad is planning to hit all the forgotten Olde Worlde instances on the way up (we're currently mid-30s).

I think the fastest /played I got a toon to 20 was about 13 hours and change. Not sure how much of that was rested, though.
I got Zigi from 7-11 in 1-2 hours' playing last night. I will need a couple long sessions to get him to 20 by Friday night. Might be possible depending on how much free time I have.
He's a belf but I might move him to the Barrens because I know the quests there so much better than Ghostlands, and can crunch through the content faster.

DAoC was brutal if you were leveling solo once you got to the higher levels. If you had a guild power-leveling you, you could do it quickly from what I hear. Solo was just pull after pull from static mob camps, and if you had some bad luck and got killed, it erased the last 15-20 minutes of leveling. I can't ever go back to that kind of leveling again.

I started a new character to play with some friends on another server on Saturday morning. Hit 21 last night after about 18 hours of moderate play. The grind is really pretty light, as there's almost always something level-appropriate to do.
I'd love to join the Frostwolf shenanigans, but my level 24 Frostwolf Mage is a human. :(

I'd say a "few" hours is stretching it. I just leveled a new Hordie to 60 in a month, and while the 20-60 grind is totally accelerated (barely 5 days /played, whoa), it'll still take 12-20 hours to get that toon to level 20.

Leveling in wow is cake compared to DAoC. Heck, leveling in EQ2 is easier than DAoC, and that's saying a lot.

Bruce is moonlighting on our group? For shame! Why aren't you guys on Arathor?
We are using the same characters we used before - Tom's paladin and my hunter. Mark rolled a up a priest for major healage. The fact that the original characters were on Frostwolf is what decided the server location. This is really kind of a one-off thing. And to Chris Johnson, I do have a couple characters on Horde Arathor, so feel free to gank me all you want, to the extent that this is possible on a PvE server.
Btw, I know many of you have seen this, but this guy can level from 1-70 is one day, 2 hours.

I have a warrior named Legoduplo, and a warlock named Danibunten. That's on Arathor, where I play with the weekly Rywill bunch. On Frostwolf I'm just Brooski.

Weird, I've been on Arathor since it's been close to open (when they offered free transfers from Bronzebeard) and I've never seen or noticed a Quarter to Three guild member. I am Twarnnd (resto shammie), Fwarn (hunter), or Swarn (shadow priest), fighting the good fight against horde scum everywhere!

On Arathor we are Hordies. Have you ever faced Sharpeshot, Sharpeshock, Smokeynecros, Chumly, Maelga, or Epitaph in arena or BG? B/C thats us QT3 horde guys :O. All of us have done some arena or PvP off and on.

This is 'beat' in the Wargames sense, I presume? I'd say Deadmines is the best, though they're all good in different ways (IMO). Out of interest, which were the others.

I'm still up for tonight, Missbeef is halfway to 22 as of this post, which is more than adequate for the retuned SFK. I'm skipping out on badge farming on my main server, I need a change of pace. :)

Thanks so much to Athryn for helping us out yesterday! Although it looks like we were a bit overpowered for Shadowfang Keep (we got to the end and I was all, like, 'That's it?'), her help was invaluable, particularly once we went into Blackfathom Depths, or whatever it's called, to help me finish a Paladin quest. Unfortunately, we wiped before it was all over.
Also, since it's been a while since I've played WoW, I kept getting confused at all her druid forms in the shuffle of character graphics and spell effects. Suddenly, there's a giant bear or wolf thing next to me and, ack!, why can't I attack it?

Yeah, thanks Athryn. It was nice having someone who actually knows Blackfathom guide us through it. We wiped at the end, and we were playing with only four players, so it really wasn't too bad to wipe at that point.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun. BFD is one of my favorite dungeons. It's a shame we didn't get to see the big evil hydra at the end, but still a lot of fun nontheless!

Sorry I missed it -- let us know if you guys are going to do any more Frostwolf stuff. I know Tom's heart is in LOTRO but WoW has the numbers, man!
I'll level Zigi on the side until he gets to the right range.

I'll do the same with Bjartyr, although I also started a character on moonrunner. I don't care if it's WoW or LotR, but it sure would be nice to have folks to game with who haven't already been raiding for two years.
