I'm pretty sure this is actually a retelling of this story:

So rather than a hacked PC version, it was a home-made homebrew DS version that the guy made specifically for his wife.

I think the idea is that while that guy violated a couple of rules, PopCap decided to give him their blessing because he didn't distribute his work to 3rd parties, and the piece of software was developed exclusively for proposing to his wife.

One can "be a good sport" when someone's done something TO you. Using Bejeweled to propose to his soon-to-be-wife is something he did FOR them.

But yeah, they're certainly running with it.

Such cynicism. It's something he did for his fiancee. PopCap is not only gracious to allow it, they honored them for it. It has to be a nice feeling for something you created to be used for more than just entertainment.
