It's stupid to tell legal adults who can vote and die for their country that they can't drink--but it's also stupid to be a single issue voter. If you're kidding, my apologies for missing the sarcasm. :-)

I appreciate your concern, Dirt, but I haven't been having any trouble drinking.
I am kidding.
Although, this whole having to check for ID to buy alcohol and stuff before you're 21 is only as recent as 1984. At least, it was here in California. There has always been some funky laws in other states. In CO you can't sell drinks with an alcohol content above 3% in supermarkets, you have to go to liquor stores. In PA, you can buy alcohol in drive through places, something that wouldn't fly here in CA. In Alabama, you can't have any alcohol above 6%, etc.

Dirt was never going to vote Obama anyway. He's been consistently jumping on Obama for every perceived controversy.
I've also defended Obama. Not vehemently, but I have.
its a pretty simple issue, but that's a straighter answer than I'd expect from a presidential candidate.
It was Elizabeth Dole who is responsible for the 21 year drinking thing. Blame her.

I thought it was pretty clear Dirt was joking from the first post. Oh, and to clarify, Alabama also has laws against selling alcohol on Sundays. That there's church day!

Obama lost my vote when he refused transparency on the critical boxers/briefs issue.

So does Connecticut. Though I guess you can still buy alcohol in bars.

Then can you stop posting this kind of nonsense?
It's not clever, just annoying.
You're not undercutting the negative opinions of you, you're confirming them.

I saw a drive through liquor store in Arkansas, when I was in the Army. That was crazy.

Legal drinking ages are state laws anyway.
Granted, a law passed back in 1984 that said the fed could hold back 10% of their federal highway funding for states that didn't have a drinking age of 21. Louisiana was one of the last holdouts, changing its legal drinking age in 1995. Most recently, Vermont (http://www.jointogether.org/news/headlines/inthenews/2008/vermont-lawmakers-consider.html) is considering going back down to 18.

And I appreciate their waiting until after I was safely 21. Though it's not as if anyone ever gets carded in Louisiana.

If you're in the armed forces can you drink on base in Iraq if you're under 21? Is there any drinking on base at all? I assume there isn't much off base...

I see the debate between a drinking age of 18 or 21 as a fight between internal consistency and pragmatism. In other words, a drinking age of 21 doesn't "work" logically, since people younger than that can get married or go to war, but it "works" in the sense that it helps (to some extent) to reduce teen alcohol consumption and reduce drunk driving.
Personally, I would prefer a lower drinking age, but I also don't see why the choice has to be between a drinking age of 18 or 21. Changing the drinking age to 19 or 20 seems a good compromise; it's no more illogical than 21, and it is old enough that high school students still won't be (legally) drinking.

I'm all for a drinking age of 16*. Just make it so you can't get a driver's license until 18.
*oh, and maybe we could teach young people that there's a safe area between teetotling and binge drinking and that you can have fun drinking in moderation. Just maybe.

Zero tolerance alcohol policy when driving regardless of age. How about that now?
At the same time lower the drinking age so when teens get drunk they won't be afraid to call their parents to give them a ride because they know they won't get in trouble.

Drinking isn't fun. Naked people are fun. If you don't support drinking heavily, you hate boobies.

It's a great idea. My whole thing is I think they've lowered the BAC too low now, but penalties aren't stiff enough.
