I ordered a new judo gi from Howard Combat Kimonos in California. It was supposed to arrive sometime on 6th, but I got a notice that a shipping 'exception' had occurred, which would impact delivery.

I go to the Web site, and here it is:

LOS ANGELES,

As of yet, no update on the shipping status.

I wonder if that's a pull-down in the system or they had to type that in by hand.
What other contingencies have they planned for?

This might be the derailment I'm guessing:

Curious what official UPS policy on this -- at what point do they go "Yeah, so your stuff is probably covered in hydrochloric acid -- here's a refund." But knowing it's UPS, they'll say it's not their fault and I'll be the one fucked.

It's probably lost. Happened to me a couple of months ago. Call em up.

I broke down and actually called them, and much to my surprise it was not a totally unpleasant situation. They were like "Oh, yeah, the train thing..." and amazingly enough had more information than their Web site showed*. Supposedly none of the UPS trailers were damaged and they're in the process of transferring them to ground transportation, which will add a few days to the process. The Web site doesn't reflect this I guess because there's no drop down for "STATUS: TRANSFERRING PACKAGE FROM DERAILED TRAIN TO ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION IN THE DESERT".

* I'm used to calling them, and them going "Oh, well, we just get the same screen as you"

If I could find it, I'd post the DHL one that was supposed to be a 3-4 day courier delivery from the UK to Australia, which spent around 3 days in Manchester airport, then 7 days at London Heathrow, then 1 day in Singapore, and then got held up by customs in Australia for nearly 3 weeks. And all because someone at DHL in the UK had forgotten to tick one of the customs boxes, I found out later.

If UPS fucks up your delivery and it's late, you can usually complain and get the delivery fee refunded. If they lose or break the package, you can additionally get back the declared value ($99 if none specified). If external events, such as zombies and trains (and zombie trains!) delay it, you're poop out of luck.

You know, actually seeing shipping status reminds me of the times when shipping was a shot in the dark with no timeline given. We've come a long way when they actually even tell you "Train Derailment" on a web accessible status document.

Yeah, back in the old days, it just used to be "Horse Derailment".

Hilarious. Make sure you return it if you experience a burning sensation while wearing it.

For those anxiously awaiting the outcome, the package was delivered today in pristine condition -- that's actually pretty impressive performance, it took 7 days for this to ship cross country via ground INCLUDING A TRAIN DERAILMENT.

Yeah, I assume you live in a house though, and that someone was home at the time. Otherwise, once you factor in the UPS knock-and-run-away delivery tactic, it would've taken an extra 3-5 days.

I'd totally play this game.
