Loved this movie when it came out, particularly the production design in the kid's bedroom.

I rewatched the first half and noticed that it really is just a Karate Kid movie. I think Steven Zaillian does a good job of obscuring that fact by putting greater emphasis on the father/son relationship, and also the very fact that it's chess and not some athletic endeavor makes it somehow seem more intellectual.

But this time around I chafed at some of the Hollywoody contrivances. The script even works in some "chosen one" stuff with dialogue by the Bruce Pandolfini character, who hints that chess has been in a bad state ever since Bobby Fischer disappeared, and the boy could reclaim its once-glorious state. It lends a certain subtext to the proceedings but in retrospect I found it goofy. I was half expecting Pandolfini to show Josh how to work a lightsaber.

Similarly, the depiction of the "evil chess player," who comes in around the halfway point, is blatantly manipulative. He's humorless, robotic, dedicated only to chess. And so of course we have to root for Josh because he's a good kid with a heart who has other interests besides chess.

Still a good movie, but IMO the seams show more than they once did.

Sure its got its formulas, but I have a soft spot for this movie. I really liked the idea of it, the tying in of the Fischer history, the Fishbourne vs. Kingsley schools of chess thought and the father/son stuff.

It wasn't a waste of a way to spend an afternoon, but if you get a chance, watch Fresh (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/) for a completely different take on chess and father/son relationship and being in the context of the hood and drug dealers.

Don't bring your queen out too early.

See, you can learn things from chess movies.

I rewatched the first half and noticed that it really is just a Karate Kid movie.Interestingly, Josh Waitzkin also does martial arts.

I loved this movie back when it came out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it seems a bit dated today.

I liked the movie for what it was: good entertainment. Being a chess player myself, I always smile at the stereotypes they use over and over again (the "wonder combination" that safes the day, saying check as the first sign of doom for the opponent etc.) in movies about chess. On the other hand: It's a charming movie with good actors (although I'd like to see a movie, where the main child character isn't just a wide eyed all good never do wrong boy) and some sympathy for chess.
Last summer I read the book (it's written by the Josh's father). It's a good read and highlights also the pressure the kid had to endure.

Watched this movie today keeping in mind the description of it as 'a Karate Kid' movie. Really changed my expectations. Not enough sweeping of legs. Not as badass a soundtrack.

I'll always like Little Man Tate more. Though that may just be because I love myself some humorless lesbians.
