Download copyrighted material and Orin Hatch will take the hatchet to your PC (http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/06/18/download.music.ap/index.html). Of course, this idea isn't going to get very far, but sheesh!

I agree that copyright holders have a legitimate beef with downloads, but Hatch is off his rocker. He must be pissed off that people are downloading his songs for free rather than buying the CD :D

I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, including to every record executive I know:
You're making a big mistake if you think trying to harm people's computers is going to do anything good.
It's funny that they think malicious activity will stop 'malicious' activity. There are hundreds, if not thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people out there who know an infinitely vast amount of knowledge about computers than anyone in the government or the record industry. Hell, hackers regularly deface the RIAA websites, government websites, even steal 'classified' documents. And that's all that we know of. They're making a big mistake if they think they're going to fuck with these people and get away with it.
Oh well, I'm all for fucking Big Brother up the ass, in both the corporate and the Federal holes.
Edit: Ahahahaha. I realize starting a paragraph with a malformed laugh makes me look like Captain Cookiepants, but I can't resist. Hatch thinks that by destroying a few thousand people's computers that other's will learn the lesson? Uh, no. You'll get a shitload of lawsuits, frivilous or not, and a ton of pissed off script-kiddies and hackers who want nothing but to deface you with machette. Why is our government run by idiots? Oh, yes, that's right, because the people that Hatch wants to hurt are the ones who elected him. Funny.

He also co-authored the DMCA, if you've been keeping score.
