I know I'm probably a have a decade late and a sequel short, but I really want to start to play this game again, as I've already been punked on the ability to automange and manage without a governor setting by multiple users here.
Anyways, is there any good mods for this game? The one I've tried was a Lord of the Rings variant, and although really well done, it wasn't all that great.
One thing I am looking for: Perhaps a Shogun: Total war update for this game? If there is one, I might just die of happiness. I'll cruise the internet, but if anyone has any favorites, give your impressions here.

Europa Barbarorum (http://europabarbarorum.com/) is a huge rebalancing, re-skinning, and re-designing of the core Rome campaign. It tries to be historical to a fault but it doesn't affect playability. Well, aside from the fact that they broke the in-game building browser. Regardless, it's extremely well done, very polished, and simply plays better than the original campaign in every concievable way.

I think there's been a lot of mod work done on this game and some of it very good, though I don't know the specifics. My brother was into the RTW mod scene for a time.

That seems to be a favorite amongst the hardcore fans. I, however, don't care about the historical accuracy, but more or less the strategy screen. If it doesn't come with a full campaing, I'm not downloading it.

It comes with a full campaign, and it is much improved too.
One caveat, due to the scripts EB uses strategy map turns take up to ten times as long to finish (after you hit the end turn button) as they did in vanilla Rome. It's not for the weak of processor.
I'd love to see a game with a Han Chinese army. Then we can see once and for all whether the Roman army would win or the Han army would win.

If EB isn't to your liking practically all mod projects of significance have forums over at Total War.org (http://totalwar.org)
The variety of mods is staggering but few have had the amount of work ad polish put in them that EB has.

Because game developers have the answer to that question.

Han's army would definitely win. After all they beat an entire legion of the Emperor's best troops! Also, Wookies seem like they'd be quite scary in melee combat.

I bought the barbarian invasions expansion so that I could play the Arthurian:Total War mod. I have always wanted a dark-age Britain strategy game, so I thought I should put up or shut up. But I couldn't work out what was going on when I started it up, and then I read on the mod forums that they had designed it to be a challenge even for those who knew how to game the RTW system. That, together with the bewildering number of unit types they had added to the game, has kept me from going back to it.

Oh god that would solve dozen's of debates I've been in.
I found only one Shogun Total War mod for Rome, and it didn't have any campaign, so I regretfully did not download it.
It had a Ming Dynasty army, as well as a Mongolian army. Of course, the most units were given to the Japanese armies, but I do believe Mongolians used more than JUST horsemen...

If you want a good campaign then I'd suggest Europa Barbarorum as well. It's the best I've played.
I've tried the 4th Age (Middle Earth) - ok but not fantastic in my opinion.
Have a look at the twcenter.net and totalwar.org.
