These are reappropriated internet memes attached to pictures that seem not to have been chosen by any other criteria than the ease of finding them.

In other words, it's MORE pointless than the original meme, and not funny or illuminating to boot! Yay!

Merely referencing another work does not make one's work deeper or more interesting: see Scary Movie I-V, The Comebacks, etc. etc.

Okay, I thought these were hysterical. Rimbo, people may rag on your taste in t3h funny, but this one was a home run, sir.

DoomMunky, do you even know what postmodernism is?

I think this is a case where the joke just went right over people's heads.

I think this is a case of severely underestimating the height of our heads.

Re-read DoomMunky's post. He was actually criticizing a link to postmodern image macros for having text that was unrelated to the picture.

Here is a horribly-colored description of what Postmodernism is (http://www.colorado.edu/English/courses/ENGL2012Klages/pomo.html) for reference, if necessary.

madkevin

Oh, for fuck's sake, Rimbo. All post-modernism means is "the period after modernism". There are as many descriptions and definitions for it as there are professors in English Lit university departments.

Besides, it's perfectly possible to be both post-modern AND funny. These are neither, because arbitrarily assigning unrelated text to pictures is Dadaism.

Oh, for fuck's sake, Rimbo. All post-modernism means is "the period after modernism".

And all "McDonald's" means is "the thing owned by someone named McDonald," and thus any reference to a particular kind of restaurant is silly.

You're just arguing for arguing's sake.

Dude, you were complaining to somebody that they didn't know what postmoderism was, when the thing you linked has nothing to do with postmodernism. What, did you think that because these are not technically webcomics, you get a free pass?

Dude, you were complaining to somebody that they didn't know what postmoderism was, when the thing you linked has nothing to do with postmodernism.

If what you want to claim is that they aren't funny and that I should bow to your superior taste in humor, I'll kowtow as necessary, because I don't really give a damn. (Although I got a chuckle out of the kitten photo's text, and thought someone else might.)

Both Dr. Klages' definition and the Wikipedia entry seem to suggest that it has something to do with Postmodernism -- we have images that have no bearing on the text, images depicting ironic clashes with the text, images that are merely cynical and other examples of the Postmodern movement as defined by both of those sources on display in the link above.

While I may be in my own little world, it seems that the consensus outside of QT3 seems to agree with me on this one.

Both the link I gave and the Wikipedia definition would seem to disagree with your claim.

So, while I may be in my own little world, but it seems the consensus in the vast world outside of QT3 seems to be here with me.

No, it isn't.

You're wrong.

Come to think of it, since Postmodernism basically stole many its ideals from Dadaism in the first place, how can you say with a straight face, "It's not Postmodernist, it's Dadaist?" That's like claiming that Noddy Holder was the person who in fact just died, just because all of Quiet Riot's good songs were Slade covers.

The difference between postmodernism and dadaism is:

1. Dadaism is stupid, chaotic, original, and anti-commercial.

2. Postmodernism is intelligent, predictable, imitative, and profitable.

It's hard for me to accept that postmodernism stole its ideals from dadaism when postmodernism is practically defined by its awesomely expensive corporate architecture, and dadaist architecture is an oxymoron: no one would live (for long) in a dadaist house, it would either collapse or fold up into the fourth dimension.

I suppose I am being unfair to postmodernism, which must have its worth innovative practitioners (though I can't think of any of them offhand) but I really dislike almost all its productions, compared for example to modernism. I also deride the laughably obtuse esthetic theory that supports the movement.

Well, it's not exactly unheard of for an otherwise unmarketable set of ideas to have the bulk of those ideas borrowed and made into something commercial and marketable. cf. 80's Hair Bands

Rimbo: Those are awesome!

Anyone want to hear my postmodern existential knock-knock joke?

Me: Knock knock.
You: Who's there?
Me: Hey, it's me.
You: Oh, hey. What's up?
Me: Not much. What are you doing? Can I come in?
You: Sure. You want something to drink? I only have Diet Coke.
Me: Yeah, that's fine. Want to go see American Gangster tonight? I hear it's pretty good.
You: Sure, but I can't really go to a late one. I have to work in the morning. Do you know what theater it's at?

True, but meme is a horrible neologism, and the analogy with genes is very weak, so let's just agree that Dawkins is very smart, but shouldn't have made up this particular word. I have to agree with krokodile here.

God, shut up. The last thing we need is for you to take this thread and use it as another retarded point of reference for your posting history here. Fuck you and all you worthless losers who try to wear your various badges of forum idiocy as if they carry some sort of humor or relevance. Nobody cares that you hate boyshorts, or like stupid webcomics, or beat off to lolcats pics, or lie about your entire worthless life. God forbid you try to be an actual human being that anyone can agree with or relate to.

Being different doesn't make you special, Rimbo. It makes you an asshole.

What!?

It is an incredibly strong and descriptive analogy and is absolutely vital for any coherent analysis of how darwinian forces affect human social and technological development.

As a scientific term, "meme" is as valuable and defensible as it could possibly be.

If I were creating a webcomic or something and I wanted to depict a characature of a "ridiculous twit", this could easily be the exact text I would place in the speech bubble.

This reminds me that as a server, I used to get paychecks for no money (taxes on claimed income exceeded hourly wage). At one restaurant, the check would say "This is not a check". I always referred to them as Magritte's Check, but no one ever got the joke.

Oh well. At least I amuse myself.
